Wednesday 2x01 Full Reaction!

That is some good timing with the best director viewing. Morticia and Gomez do have a very feisty marriage. Presently only at the episode after this one. To prep for Jess returning from break, caught the first two to be safe. Have to get to the rest soon. (I know one spoiler as the internet is unkind, and it was in the trailer, or so I was told.) Though not always perfect, Tim Burton is very good at constructing stories with solid plots. And even the times that falters, he generally has the fun characters so it’s still more often than not a fun time. Haley has faded from the mainstream spotlight, and it is great to see him pop in random places. See his sister’s also sort of back in the spotlight too, which is nice. My brother enjoys seeing him in stuff like this or The Boys. Haley’s in kind of a thing that Daniel Radcliffe’s been doing of just seeking out the projects he wants to do, and he kills it every time. Good to know about the head split open business. Also, speaking of Haley, good to see you got my one reference, I was worried about that one not being recognized. Steve is well suited to follow in the footsteps of Gwendoline. Still unbelievable that he’s not worked with Tim Burton more than he has. Already he’s great in this and conveys the very subtle menace. Not sure I can judge his music tastes too harshly. I’ve been out of the popular, or at least contemporary loop for about a quarter of a century now. Good riddance to bad rubbish with the Xavier of it all. Hadn’t heard about the accusation getting retracted, and apparently the actor’s in something else with Jenna. The name of the school he’s gone to sends a pretty clear message, and now we wait to hear word about him being all excited to accompany Charles Deetz on a bird watching expedition. Enid does fit the love triangle of it all better, though can we get some hint of her and Wednesday being endgame? Please? The extended role for the family does wonders for the soul. I guessed right a while back when you alluded to Billie in this show. I already got the Who joke and that’s my only one. (Unless they lean into shit in the show, and even then, I’ll only comment on the reactions Jess would have to that.) The reference of the chicken threatens the breakdown, though sticking with that finale, and using the music tie-in, it could be worse: You could react to seeing Capri by resembling Charles when he goes to his tent to listen to the Clarinet Quintet, only to break the record in despair. That plotline destroys my brother and I the most in that finale. Never have caught any Honey to the Bee, though I know of Billie’s musical background prior to Rose. Upon seeing the manuscript being in danger, Purple Noon, followed shortly by how you mentioned the MASSIVE trigger you have in regard to that one scene, was instantly on my mind. Thought, “Oh, Ryan is going to HAAAATE that.” Good call on the strategy you have, and I love how Enid even calls out Wednesday for not even using xerox or good old fashioned carbon copy. Perfectly understandable that you would wish to rain down an ungodly fucking firestorm upon the villain for that one. Said villain, pipe dream though it is, I so BADLY want it to be Debbie, or have her somewhere down the line. And I concur that her character is rather deeply tragic for the reasons you mentioned. The character is seriously one of the most underappreciated villains ever, and you can tell that Joan so clearly had so much fun playing Debbie.

I imagine I'm far from the only one who wished Wednesday said "Defend yourself" before Thing launched out of the doll. "Understand" is a very strong word when it comes to anything regarding Twin Peaks. It's really pretty impressive how it rides the line of being just barely comprehensible enough to keep you invested in where things are going, while still knowing in the back of your mind there's not much point in guessing with the total lack of rules to the story. The Grosse Pointe Blank reference has me thinking, this show's version of Debbie Jelinsky would probably really be something. I always thought she was a really tragic character, totally unable to accept that she'd finally found a group of people who would be fully willing to accept the real her and give her everything she wanted, so instead she pointlessly betrays them which only gets herself killed.

It's especially fun coming back to the show since I've been seeing every Best Director Oscar winner for a while, which includes the one where Gomez is killed by a car bomb ordered by Morticia (and all to get to Albert Rosenfield before he can squeal to the Feds; you'd probably get a kick out of this one). I binged the whole second half today, which means this is perfect timing to go back and appreciate how well constructed this story is. Without any spoilers, I can say we've already seen a whole bunch of stuff set up in ways hard to predict but which make perfect sense. For a while it looked like Haley Joel Osment would fall into the worst trap of former child stars, but he's come out the other side seemingly a really happy guy content to just make the occasional pop-in like this. He actually seems to deliberately seek out off-putting roles rather than pursuing any continued mainstream success, and all power to him when it results in stuff like this. And anyone who's seen The Boys knows exactly what his head being split open looks like, so I'm fine having it offscreen here. As you note, following Gwendoline Christie is a pretty tall order (so to speak), so Burton reached deep into his rolodex and brought back Norther Winslow to hang out with his fellow kids. And he already adds so much with his 40+ years' experience adding an instant gravitas even as we struggle to get hold of exactly who this guy is. I'm thinking especially of the moment when Bianca turns him down and he briefly gets an utterly chilling look in his eye like someone who's not used at all to being told no, before snapping back into character and going for a slightly more subtle tactic. Though I'm not too sure about his musical taste; come on, play Degenerated! This season clearly took some notes regarding the biggest complaints about Season 1. Xavier is gone (no official reason has been given, though Percy Hynes White did briefly get an accusation of harassment that's since been withdrawn) and the love triangle duties are shifted onto Enid who fits the setup much better, plus the entire family now gets to be a regular part of the show rather than just a couple guest spots. All while still having plenty of time for Wednesday herself so it still makes sense that the show is named after her. Oh, and there's the intriguing introduction of Capri, who I guess makes a good impression, though right now the mere sight of Billie Piper turns me into Hawkeye realizing the truth about the chicken. "You son of a bitch, why did you make me remember that?" Also, I was there for Honey to the Bee and I won't stand for you disparaging anyone else's musical skill, sweetie. Like I've said here about Purple Noon, as already referenced in this section, as someone who's actually had a book published, few things can get me as immediately, viscerally pissed off as threatening to destroy a manuscript, knowing full well how much effort and soul goes into that. That's why I sent my book to every member of my family one chapter at a time. So I was already fully on board with finding this new villain with extreme prejudice. And after finishing this season, there's so much here I'm beyond eager for you to see (I actually don't have much idea who you're talking about being spoiled for if it's a woman and not someone we've met in this episode, so that's one more thing to look forward to).

Oh, my Lord, look at that festive set-up, I love it! Can’t make out who the funko is. Two cents on the new camera: Very slight difference in color compared to the old one, but it’s looking fine by my estimation. I don’t know, but I got a pretty good goddamn idea as to who the certain someone is that you are greatly anticipating in this show. If perchance I’m wrong, I shall endeavor to keep a good poker face on that front. Only seen this episode and the next one thus far. Loving being back with this show. Great opener with Wednesday going after Haley Joel Osment. Seeing him was a fun jolt. And he’s now a serial killer; Hub and Garth would be very disappointed. And your best friend would hate the dolls of it all as I knew you were going to say something about that. And fair that you say that the man’s greatest crime is the tracksuit. Already one of the big highlights of the season is more of the family, especially more Luis as Gomez and certainly more of the always lovely Catherine as Morticia. And now Pugsley gets to experience the hell of being in the same school as his older sibling. Reminds me how although there was the shared time at school for a few years, when I started high school twenty years ago, my brother had already graduated the year prior, so the one area that Pugsley is experiencing that I never went through at that age. Your strategy of avoiding the trailers pays off as the surprise of Steve Buscemi as Dort was most excellent. He starts off very strong, which, it’s Steve. Dort saying that they’re all Nightshades, well, it’s far less problematic than telling everyone that they’re all minorities because they’re in the glee club. (I still don’t know what the FUCK anyone was thinking with that scene.) Good to catch up on the characters like Galpin, who it sucks what happened to his buddy. They went hardcore Damien Omen II with this business with the ravens, (with some obvious shades of The Birds for seasoning,) and I very much appreciated that. As you say, “The owls are not what they seem.”, which I really need to see that show someday so I can understand that reference. Beautiful to see you react to your favorite that is Eugene again. Shame that Pugsley is interested in noshing on the bugs, preferably the little cream-filled kind. You would like him to put the kibosh on that activity. We both assess that Pugsley has started the beginnings of a beautiful friendship. Hopefully, the one with Eugene blossoms and flourishes in the pale moonlight as well. Nice of the show to give the update that Xavier’s gone off to Reichenbach Academy. I like that name. And the very pointed subtext to it makes a man let out a very hearty Palpatine cackle. You spoke of the Morticia and Bianca dynamic which should be interesting. Morticia, she is yearning for a certain type of mother and daughter relationship, and Bianca could help her fill the void of that in some manner. Enid remains my favorite. Which is unusual for me. More unusual for being a Tim Burton project at that, especially compared to my favorite characters in his prior works. Love her care and concern for Thing, and I adored your reactions to that. She should cut the dead weight that is gorgon man; follow your advice on that. We have more cello montage and music. Lovely Prokofiev on the cello. Quite like you rocking along to it a little. Leads to the new music teacher coming in and giving advice that you had the strong reaction to. Good music advice. Quite nice of Doctor... Who did she say she was again? She did sport a damn good look; you’re right about that. Her fake American accent was surprisingly good too. Leagues better than Hugh Laurie on House. The big event at the end was a hot time in the old town tonight. You say that Wednesday should not go under the pyre. She should be going under the pyre as someone burning a novel that the little lady has been working on for two years is even more fucked up than Maurice Ronet taking the manuscript that Marie Laforêt worked so hard on and throwing it into the ocean. I fight for Wednesday’s decision to save her novel. Appreciate how you clocked Wednesday burning the portrait, and you can tell her parents knew the score. I feel seen in that part when they unveil the portrait and Morticia and Gomez shared that knowing look. My parents had that type of moment at one point or another. My brother and now my sister in-law have had it as well. And she set fire to it, and it was glorious. What was not glorious was the omens of Enid dying, which we are NOT FUCKING DOING THAT!!! Love how you said, “OH. Absolutely not.” in response to the omens of Enid’s death. My own comments were to chide, “Oh, now, see? That wasn’t a nice thing to do; that wasn’t designed to make me feel good. That’s a, uh, kind of a, not too subtle intimidation, and I, uh, get filled with anxiety when you show me something like that. And now, I’m left with the aftermath of that, that’s not right.” Mostly set-up for the first episode back, so it bodes well for what’s to come. Other highlights. Love the family’s horror over Laurel’s old home decorating skill. That scene when Wednesday says that she was born uncomfortable, oh, I felt that. We establish mystery with the sister of Morticia. I am unable to confirm nor deny if the enigmatic sister is or is not who the certain special someone is playing. Supposing she is, the casting would sound good, though again, and I’m not being cute, I genuinely do not know one way or another. And we still have stalkery business to tend to, leaving me to pray, “Oh, dear sweet God in Heaven, please let it be Debbie!!” And we both had the strong reaction to the animation of the story. Oh, I cried in sheer joy over the stop-motion animation. Twas glorious and beautiful. Gladdened to hear that Rocco is ok; that’s been gnawing at my heart and brain out of pure worry for the last day or so. I saw you said that earlier in the week, and no apology necessary about the delay; this reaction was well worth the wait, and Rocco takes precedence. Always. Hear you on the late night getting to bed. I’ve had those nights. Glad to hear you and Rocco are doing well, and just such a joy to be sharing this show again with you, Jess, thank you for the lovely reaction.
