AHTYA01 - Intro To The UI And Basic Concepts

Dear Patrons,

so today the Houdini introduction for 3D artists starts, with a basic episode outlining the functions of the different parts of the UI and some of the important concepts of Houdini. I discuss the Scene and Geometry level of the Network editor and tell you about the differences of object and geometry nodes.

Along the way I point out some specialty UI elements of Houdini. This lesson is quite basic to give you a cozy start.

I'm looking forward on hearing your opinion about pace and content of this video.

Best Manuel

Hi ~ Thank you for your response~ Oddly, the videos work on iOS via web (chrome) but not linked through the app. A bug i'm sure but at least I can view~ cheers~

Hi Peter, did it work by now? I think sometimes there are issues with Patreon on Android... We're aware of it and not too happy about it too :) Cheers, Mo

Is it critical to use middle mouse button? As a mac user I have some issues with it.

ugozna

I liked it. Do you have a discord server or telegram chat? For casual small questions maybe?

ugozna

That was great. Didn't know about the U and I hotkeys to go in and up. Thanks!

Gustavo Gonzalez

Thank you Manuel .. for starting this series of lessons .. :)

Ahmed Adel

That's fantastic, thanks!

Krzysztof Łabno

That was great. Houdini does not seem so intimidating after watching that.

Shannon Wilkerson

Great introduction to principle concepts, thank you!

Piotr Wojtczak

Longtime Maya user who recently made the switch. Thank you for this explanation, I normally would have skipped a "learning the basics" but now I realize I don't even need the UI per se.

Hi Adriano, you're right. The very first video of this series is basic. But you have to start somewhere. This course is meant for people with no prior Houdini knowledge. So even the basics have to be explained. If you have a look at the pace of the other courses on this site you'll see that we don't stick to the one video per month rule. It's more like two videos a week. One for every course. The next video will still be basic as it'll deal with the geometry context and the attribute system. Once we have this in place we'll built a quite sophisticated sweep operator and create a digital asset from it. Then we'll do a MoGraph style setup and code some falloffs. After that it'll be volumes and poly modeling. Then intro to VOPs and VEX. Then we'll start with DOPs.

Really, guys? :$ I don't mean to be unappreciative or impatient here, but there are many in depth tutorials out there already, many of them free, to learn the basics of Houdini's interface and concepts. And by the look of things now, before we get to the "Advanced CG Tutorials" content I decided to support this page for... at the rate of 1 video a month (?!) it is going to take a while. Any chance you could give the heads up on the next learning material you're planning to share please? Topics and release dates? Thanks a lot.

Adriano Zanetti

Been ready for this one!
