Volumes 101 - Juliabulb Using Volume Procedurals

What else can you create with volume procedurals? In this one we take a look at the archetypical example of what's possible with procedurals: We create a three dimensional Juliabulb fractal (Yes, you've all seen the Mandelbulb, but c'mon - this is a Juliabulb!)

As  a bonus we also threw in an openCL wrangle to generate the same fractal.

Hello and first of all, thank you for this amazing tutorial. I do have however some questions, as I would like to take this one step further: - how to you get to change the colors of the volume? Since the shader is a geometry shader? - even more important! Can this (Vex snippet, for instance) be thrown into Redshift? If it is too much hassle to explain this, perhaps you would have some references or some others of your videos that explain the process?

Hi Oscar, actually my selection of papers is kinda limited. For a neat intuitive explanation of the Mandelbrot set have a look at this Numberphile episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFftmWSzgmk Apart from that there's this brief paper about the Juliabulb: http://www.fractal.org/Formula-Mandelbulb.pdf And this implementation done by Inigo Quilze on Shadertoy: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/MdfGRr Cheers, Mo

Hi guys, could you please told us about the resources used to get those nice juliabulbs? I did some research but for example I didn't find anyone explaining the N parameter dealing with the simmetry points. So I'd like to dig into fractals a bit more and I'm pretty sure you must have some nice papers/links about them, maybe you can share those.

figured it out :) - lol - I still am figuring out some of the basics.

This may be a super noob question but how would I animate this? I completed the lesson but not sure how to animate fractual at end. Anyhelp would be awesome thank you!

Hi Christian, you're talking about the volume step rate in the mantra node, right? That sounds weird, which version of Houdini are you on? Cheers, Mo

Hi Entagma! Love the tutorial :) Trying to follow the video and for some reason I can't find Volume Step size anywhere(even when looking under the edit parameter interface properties) when I open your file I see it in the mantra node. Would you have any idea why I can't access it?

Christian Hagbarth

Afaik there's no volume procedural support in Redshift at the moment... Cheers, Mo

Fascinating stuff, guys. Absolutely incredible. I'm also wondering about the Redshift compatibility with such method though. Is there a way to bring that Vex shader into RS, please? Cheers.

Adriano Zanetti

Thank you guys so much for the Volume Procedurals segments! I hope Redshift supports procedural shaders soon. Can't wait to animate this fractal!!

Hi, i found some chinese website is going to resell the Premium Course. You guys should do something about it.This is the site <a href="http://timelinefx.com/bbs/forum.php" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://timelinefx.com/bbs/forum.php</a>

Rest assured we hear you.... There might be something coming for the padawans in the coming weeks/months :)

Entagma

Thanks Manuel and Moritz, you are awesome. I am newbie in Houdini so dont forget some VEX code for padawans like me.......... Always you will have my support in Patreon :)

SantiDarkG

cool stuff, wish my computer was not so garbage when it comes to mantra rendering...

Thanks Moritz, I have learned so much on this topic in the past few weeks and this thread is helping loads.
