2025-02-02 05:21:37 +0000 UTCI think Jonathan is the one that really likes gaslighting the audience. The most gaslighty Nolan movies are the ones where Jonathan co-writes them and other evidence like Westworld. I saw this at Imax on the week of original release and I've said it constantly since and I still believe it - you haven't seen this movie unless you've seen it at Imax: it's legitimately a whole different movie. Real Imax, 70mm, not the fake kind. The sense of scale is a wholly different experience, as is the audio systems that come with it. The scene when they're travelling through the wormhole feels like you're on a ship it's so loud then when they arrive out the other side and it goes quiet is an absolute goosebumps moment. Also because of the specific Imax I went to was a bit of a favourite of Chris Nolan's they had one of the models of the landers they used in production, the detail on them was absolutely exquisite on the subject of Nolan liking to do things practically - and they were huge too, at least 2 meters long. On Murph and Brand being similar, the movie ostensibly underneath everything about a father's relationship with his daughter - but it applies as much with the Brands as much; but there's an interesting thing that happens when you think about it: they daughter swap, Professor Brand's daughter with Coop, and Coop's daughter with Professor Brand then sort of become surrogate fathers - I'm not 100% sure what the movie is saying with that, but it's very definitely an intentional thing the movie is trying to say. When this was released nobody knew Matt Damon was in it, they very definitely didn't include him in the trailers and his name wasn't on the IMDB credits and I remember a very palpable gasp when the audience realized who it was. It's a sneaky gaslighty trick because clearly everybody expects Damon to play the good guy, particularly after the characters earlier hyping Mann up as this great leader. One thing nobody ever talks about, but that always hits me is that moment when he wakes up and starts sobbing into Coop's shoulder is very believable, you can really feel it, it's a great piece of acting. Also I love a movie that outputs legitimate published physics research as an output of the movie making process, and this is one of those few movies. Kipp Thorne was the science adviser and he definitely elevated it to another level; it's funny, the research they did into rendering black holes accurately you see pop up in movies and tv now and then.

2024-12-21 00:47:01 +0000 UTCI love Intersteller. Amazing film. If you want to watch another emotional sci-fi father-child film, I highly recommend Frequency (2000). Itβs just as emotional, but much more grounded film. Barely any CGI maybe just 3 or 4 scenes of it.
