My Powerhouse contract ended today after five years. Layoffs came for us too. I know it's old hat to a lot of creators but I've never been an independent artist before. I've been so consumed with preparing the whole spring and summer to fly solo that I didn't have anything left in me to reflect on my time there. It's been hitting me lately. It was my first animation-industry job. I'm proud of my contributions to Castlevania, my role in unionizing our studio last year and negotiating our first Animation Guild contract, and my growth as an artist. I will miss it dearly. The good news is the design team became such good friends that we'll always keep in touch and those of us who are still in Austin get to see each other as much as we want.

It's been something to watch my passion projects that I do on the nights and weekends turn into my next thing. I started out in architecture school that turned into a graphic design job that turned into an animation career that turned into becoming a full-time Patreon creator. I've been joking for years that I wished I could draw my little guys all day for money and if I could I'd go back and be like HELLO IT'S 2024 I HAVE SOME NEWS FOR YOU!! But you, wonderful people, are the ones who made this possible. It was a move made out of both love for what I do and out of necessity-- I don't need to explain how dry the animation industry's been. This was the most solid plan I had for financial support in the long term, and you all proved that it's doable. I'm extremely grateful that it's aligned with what I love most about drawing and what you enjoy, too. I make art for a number of reasons but I share it to connect with you and I'm so glad we can do that. This is my dream job in the truest sense.
This was a leap of faith that needed to happen but it involved lots of planning and hoping. Honestly this year was the most stressful I've had in a long time and I've had a lot of anxiety over taking this step. You should see my spreadsheets (or not, they're scary). It's too easy for me to get wordy and emotional about how grateful I am for your support but you guys really came through. Some of you I've seen around for a very long time, from back when I first started putting my horrible little scribbles on tumblr. I'm so happy both the old and new are here and I very much hope you're getting half as much joy from this as I do from sharing it with you. A lot of other creators can flourish on their own because of people like you and every one of you are important to the success of the art industry. It's not all about studios and investors. It'll take some time to quiet my own fears and prove to myself that it can work but I'm mostly just looking forward to spending more time making what I love and sharing it with you. I can't thank you enough, and cheers to many future sexy pictures (and more)! π

You can't say the word 'naked' in an image post now, which is absolutely bizarre considering they allow nsfw creators. Anyway! It's still nice to be reminded how fortunate it is to be supported and support others on here while it lasts. Thank you!

I don't know where you're pressure's coming from but I think when we settle into something after a time it's easy to get restless and wonder if there's More To It somewhere else. If you're curious about other areas you should try it out on the side. I'm not taking opportunities for freelance work off the table. The beauty of this is we have the freedom now to engage with other work only if it really interests us-- and it's definitely useful to have more than one stream of income especially when your livelihood can be decided by a platform TOS. Labor will always be labor no matter if it's your favorite thing or not but it definitely goes a long way to feeling fulfilled when it *is* your favorite thing :)

2024-09-16 20:16:57 +0000 UTCI feel like reading this (and reading it again just now) is such a nice perspective shift for me, adult work on patreon does amazingly provide me with a full-time income, but I often feel a pressure to get a 'real job' (graphic novel etc) so it's kind of refreshing to be reminded of how absolutely incredible it is to be paid to do pretty much whatever you want. For you to have done the reverse route to a lot of people, and to find such joy in that is really lovely to read!
