The song wasn't well received, but it was the rollout that started the hate train more than anything. She was doing televised interviews and performed on Fallon, etc... People thought it felt forced and that she didn't deserve the opportunities she was getting bc of her being a 20 year old TikToker (at the time) who blew up from dancing videos. After being horribly bullied for Obsessed, she stepped away from music for a while, then returned in summer 2023 with an EP titled "AR". The funny thing is all of the songs from the EP had leaked online in 2022 and everyone thought the songs were incredible. Over that year long period, fans were begging her to release new music, which I believe inspired her to finally give it another go. Essentially, she went from having a hate train to building a cult fan base in two years just by her demos leaking. After she released the EP, she came back a year later with a refined image branding her as an artist and dropped "Diet Pepsi", which became a huge hit. Things to know: She writes her own lyrics, is very close friends with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, and she's Britney Spear's biggest fan. Luka Kloser & ELVIRA are the two women she makes all of her songs with now. They also produced "Diet Pepsi" & "Aquamarine". Btw, the song is literally about fashion being her drug of choice lol. She doesn't do any drugs.
