ANIMT - Chapters 11-14

ANIMT - Chapter 11. Is This The Flag That Marks The Disappearance Of My Summer Vacation?

It’s been a week since the memorable day I made my first girl-friend in this school. The calendar has changed from June to July, and the subtle yet undeniable sound of summer is almost here.

There has been a slight change in my day-to-day life as well.

“Oh, good morning, Nobana-san.”

“Oh, good morning, Yamadori-kun!”

“Good morning, Nobana-san!”

“Good morning, Uminari-san!”

“You have bedhead, Nobana-san.”

“Really?! Thanks for the heads-up, Morido-san!”

Several people called out to me as I entered the classroom, and I responded to them one by one before leisurely making my way to my seat. Shortly after putting my bag down and sitting down, Hayashi-kun, who sits behind me, greeted me, and I answered him with a beaming smile, “Good morning!”.

In the past, I spent the morning before class alone and in silence. However, ever since I rescued Konoha, Yamadori-kun has been speaking to me more often, which has gradually led to more conversations with some of my other classmates. Now that the class seems to have accepted me, I can start my day like any other ordinary student, even if only a little.

I used to eat lunch alone, but I now can share that time with Kokomi, enjoying girl talk together. The three dango sisters no longer bother me; they just stare at me from afar. I’m in a pretty stress-free state now.

The summer vacation that I’ve been looking forward to is just around the corner, the weather has been great recently, and after changing my sleep schedule, I go to bed early and get up early. I’ve been starting each morning off on the right foot.

Now, what kind of wonderful day will today be?

I prepared my textbook for the next class in a buoyant mood when Hayashi-kun tapped me on the shoulder from behind.

When I turned around to ask him what was wrong, his face was neutral, yet he said something that changed my mood from an everlasting summer to a cold and desolate midwinter.

“Oh, by the way, Kusaka-sensei wanted to see you in the teachers’ lounge. He is waiting for you.”

----I could only put on a brave front and try to cling to the hope that my wonderful days would continue.

“You’re late, Nobana. I thought I asked you to see me as soon as I got to school. Didn’t you get the message? When a teacher is waiting for you, you should do your best to get here sooner.”

----Even though I ran here.

Kusaka-sensei continued to lean back in his chair heavily and shot a cold stare at me. He had not changed at all: his words were still drenched in an unreasonable level of sarcasm, as always.

Although the number of reckless requests and inappropriate calls to me has decreased somewhat since the time I bested him, there had been no change in his attitude. If there was any change to note, it was his new-found wariness of me. That, and he doesn’t call me to the chemistry room anymore. However, nothing has substantially improved since he still summons me to the teachers’ lounge.

I wondered what was in the chemistry preparation room that he went to such lengths to hide. I had no interest in this matter, to begin with, but I couldn’t help but be a little curious. If he spouted nonsense again, I would use it to force my way in.

“I’m sorry for keeping you waiting… So, what can I do for you?”

“Hmm. Well, that’s okay. I’ll be frank with you, Nobana Mitsuba… your summer vacation is slipping out of your grasp. You’re going to lose it.”

“Huh?”

My voice turned shrill and echoed throughout the staff room. A few teachers at work looked towards the commotion source, me, but I didn’t pay them any mind.

Summer vacation, gone?

“What do you mean by that, sir?”

“Do you realize how terrible your grades are? When it comes to practical magic skills, all I see are woeful evaluations. You received the lowest grade in the last magic mock-battle competition, and your regular classes are just barely average or below. If you continue like this, you’ll need to participate in the magic study camp in addition to summer school.”

“Forced participation… summer school… ”

I felt dizzy at the reality I was assaulted with.

The way he spoke was unmistakably intended to hurt, but for once, Kusaka-sensei wasn’t picking on me. I was the cause of my troubles.

It’s no secret that I was at the bottom of my class when it came to magic, and it’s also true that my grades were not much better in my regular studies either. Even though it was a magic school, it was still a conventional high school. There were classes such as modern literature and mathematics that students took in high school. I’ve always been a poor student; ever since junior high school, I’ve had to study hard just for average grades. After I entered this school, I was so desperate to catch up with the rest of the class in terms of magic skills that I neglected my regular studies.

But when you combine the slight slip in the other areas with my devastating performance in the practical use of magic, I was undoubtedly deep in the red overall. All I could see was red.

I had already figured I would have to take summer classes and had resolved myself to do so, but that was on the pretense that they would only last a week. But from what Kusaka-sensei said, I would have a week of regular classes and a week of magic classes.

On top of that, my participation in the magic study camp was non-negotiable. The session was originally a non-compulsory magic enhancement program that only the gifted were allowed to attend. I only skimmed through the handouts, but I’m pretty sure it was a week long.

The school’s summer vacation was precisely one month long, from August 1st to September 1st. If I were to participate in both… my summer vacation would almost entirely disappear.

Although I stood in the air-conditioned comfort of the staff room, sweat trickled down my back. I might not yet have a fever, but this cold sweat threatened to drench me.

“There’s an end-of-term test in two weeks and a second magic mock competition just before the summer break. Unless you perform well in both of these, you’re not going to have a summer vacation.”

----I left the staff room in a daze, unable to give a coherent reply to the teacher.

With a jet-black shadow looming behind me, I trudged down the hallway to return to my classroom.

I overheard a group of girls in their new summer uniforms talking about their plans for the summer vacation with dazzling smiles on their faces.

They were going to the beach with their boyfriends, what a normie event.

I, too, have plans to go back to my parents’ house and play with my beloved younger brother and sister at a nearby public pool. And that’s not all! I also plan to view the local fireworks with my best friend Kae. I’ve also made plans to meet up with other friends for the first time in a long time, and I’m going to visit Kokomi at her vacation home (she was a rich lady, plain and simple).

----Above all, this was the last summer vacation of my life.

It was only natural for me to want to be free from this school and enjoy my last moments. This summer vacation was the one thing that even God couldn’t take away from me.

“… Good.”

I clenched my fists in the middle of the hallway.

I’m going to do it, aren’t I? I’ll get unprecedentedly good grades in both the end-of-term test and the magic mock-battle, and I’ll win a free summer vacation. I’ll impress Kusaka-sensei and make him change his attitude towards me!

With my goal now decided, I had my work cut out for me.

With my new-found determination fortifying my heart, I walked fast, coated in the summer sunshine that flooded in through the window.

All plans aside, the first thing I had to do was make sure I wasn’t late for homeroom…

ANIMT - Chapter 12. Fly Away Love Letter?

“I can’t believe that happened… It’s okay, onee-sama! I’ll help you protect your precious summer vacation!”

I spent lunch break on the rooftop with Kokomi. The weather was excellent, but this area was packed, as usual. Kokomi and I leaned against the fence in a corner, spreading out our lunches and enjoying this moment of bliss.

When I told her the truth about the tragedy the teacher dropped on me this morning, she looked like a little squirrel as she nibbled at her home-made sandwich aggressively.

“Thank you, Kokomi. Anyway, well, I think I can handle the regular exams if I continue studying hard… ”

“What about the magic mock-battle, though? You’ve been practicing magic very hard lately, onee-sama! I’m sure you’ll be fine!”

After befriending Kokomi and changing my sleep schedule, I’ve spent my now cleared mornings training with her. Occasionally, we’d even practice after school. We’ve been going over several fundamentals together, and yesterday I finally succeeded in expanding the range of my movement magic from one meter to one and a half meters. Please don’t comment on the fact that I’m still limited to just movement magic.

“But, Kokomi. Don’t forget; there’s a limit to what I can do by myself. The match is a team game.”

“Let’s see, onee-sama’s partner is Futaki-san… right?”

“Yes, the red-headed punk with the evil eyes. I have to work with that guy somehow… ”

Working with him was the biggest roadblock in my path to reclaiming my vacation. I sipped on my mixed berry juice box and looked up at the distant sky.

Teamwork was essential for a magic mock-battle. Unless you’re an overwhelmingly powerful individual like Kokomi, it was difficult for someone to score points on their own. It was unfortunate; however, I had no choice but to compete with my partner, Futaki-kun, and work together to obtain victory.

Of course, he probably planned on skipping out, like he did last time. I had to somehow get in contact with him, start our training immediately, and be ready to fight as a team by the day of the battle.

This hurdle seemed more difficult than any written exam, but my summer vacation would disappear if I didn’t clear it.

“In that case, shouldn’t your first goal be to talk with Futaki-san?”

“Yes, that’s right… But we can’t even find that guy in the first place. That delinquent hardly shows up for any of our classes, and when he does, he leaves the very second the bell rings, even if class isn’t over yet. I haven’t even made idle chat with him. If I ask Umetaro-san, he’ll probably tell me where his dorm room is, but I don’t want to stalk him like that… ”

Even though I had so much to do, I was already at a standstill because I was paired with someone I had no means to contact. As I racked my brains to figure out what to do, Kokomi suddenly shouted loudly.

“In that case, onee-sama! I have an idea!”

“An idea?”

“Yes! By using detection magic combined with matter manipulation magic, you can send a message directly to Futaki-san!”

“Hey, I’m sorry, but I have no idea how to do that.”

I felt terrible. Her eyes shone as she spoke, and it seemed like a solid idea, but it was simply too advanced for me to understand in the slightest. Forget doing what she said, what do those words even mean?

“Well, I’ll give it a shot then. Since I’m joining the second-years after lunch for their magical exercises, I already have permission to use magic. Let’s see, what I need is… ”

“That’s amazing, Kokomi!”

I was worried that the second-years would ostracize her; even though she was a genius and an exceptional student, no one would be happy to have someone younger than them show them up. But she didn’t seem bothered by it and continued to emphasize what a hundred people would deny. She seemed to have mellowed out significantly since when we first met.

It seemed like she was now on the right trajectory of personal growth.

“Then, onee-sama. I want you to write what you want to tell Futaki-san on this paper.”

Kokomi tore a page out of her notebook and handed it to me, along with a pen. I decided to obey her honestly and wrote down everything that came to mind.

Let’s see, in this case, the more official I make it, the better… right?

* * * *

To Futaki-kun,

It’s been a while. I’m sorry for the suddenness of this message, but I’d like to participate in the next magic mock-battle as your partner.

Let’s train together and grasp our summer vacation with our own hands!

I’ll be waiting for you after school today in the room just upstairs of the training building.

If you can’t make it today, I’ll be there tomorrow and the day after.

I’ll be waiting for you.

Regards,

Nobana Mitsuba

I finished writing and re-read it several times, clutching my forehead as I realized that this message looked suspicious no matter how you looked at it.

----I’ve never been a good writer, have I? It looks like a poorly written love letter.

“Did you finish writing it?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“Then you can put it like this… ”

With a flick of her hand, Kokomi folded the paper, on which my disappointing letter had been written, into the shape of a paper airplane. She handed it back to me again, and I looked at this paper airplane in my hand, wondering what I was supposed to do with it.

“I’m going to activate the magic and make the paper plane fly to the person you have in mind. I want you to imagine Futaki-san in as much detail as you can, including his appearance and features.”

“Oh, okay.”

I meditated and envisioned Futaki-kun.

The last time I saw him was… when I flung that branch at him and shouted until I cried.

Come to think of it, I hadn’t talked to him since that day.

I think it’s possible that… he’s still angry at me.

I honestly hadn’t thought about how he might have felt about me; I was in such a haughty mood at the time. With all that had happened that day, I had almost forgotten about my temper tantrum.

If someone called me a “shitty delinquent,” I’d probably lose my temper too.

Instead of working together, what if he hit me the moment I met him?

As my mind continued to wander, I was warned by Kokomi, “Onee-sama, please make your image stronger.”

I shook my head and concentrated on imagining him properly this time.

Whether he was angry or not, I still had to see him.

I thought to myself, ‘Futaki-kun, Futaki-kun. I think I’m imagining a slightly more evil face than the real one, but I’m sure that’s what he looks like.”

Suddenly, I saw a warm light through my closed eyes. I opened them and saw a paper airplane floating in front of me with a faint glow.

“Oh!”

“Now that’s perfect! Here, go ahead.”

In response to Kokomi’s voice, the paper plane flew off the rooftop and disappeared into the blue sky.

“Your message will probably reach him safely.”

I couldn’t help but stroke her golden hair as she puffed out her chest like a puppy begging for praise. Her hair was so beautiful as it shone in the sunlight. To be honest, I’m a little jealous of her, because I don’t like either my light pink hair or amber eyes.

“O-Onee-sama! What kind of event is this?!”

Kokomi said something I couldn’t quite understand and panicked with a bright red face.

As I enjoyed the feel of her hair, an intrusive thought wormed its way into my mind.

“Hey Kokomi, if my image was not strong enough, is it possible for that paper plane to head for the wrong person?”

“That’s… not a thing, no.”

“… I hope that doesn’t reach someone with worse looks, by mistake.”

Well, even if it did reach Futaki-kun safely, the chances of him reading it and coming to train were slim to none.

I couldn’t help but sink into misery as my eyes looked in the direction the plane had flown.

It seemed that my summer vacation was still far away beyond that sky.

ANIMT - Chapter 13. Attack of the Mysterious Creature

I buried my face in a comfortable towel and wiped the sweat from my forehead. I could feel a cool and pleasant sensation sitting down on the wooden floor.

“Good work, onee-sama.”

Kokomi, dressed in the same gym uniform as me, offered me a plastic bottle of tea. Her pure white legs peeking out from her shorts were dazzling. I thanked her, took the bottle, and quenched my thirst.

After school, Kokomi and I were once again working on training my magic. Today’s session was quite heated, and the sky had been dyed utterly red by the time I looked out the room’s single small window.

“You didn’t come after all… Futaki-san.”

Kokomi looked down wistfully as if it were her fault. With no equipment or other items to clutter the room, the largest thing in this room was her shadow, swaying dolefully in the setting sun.

I let out a chuckle at the sight of her.

“Don’t worry about it Kokomi. I wasn’t expecting him to show up anyways.”

“But maybe my magic failed, and the letter didn’t reach him… ”

“If that’s the case, then I’ll just have to think of another way. Anyway, we’re about to lose our magic permission, so let’s get changed quickly. We can head back to the dorm together and visit Umetaro-san.”

As I stood up with a smile on my face, Kokomi seemed to have regained her energy and cheerfully replied, “Yes!”

My body felt dull from the overuse of my limited magic power, but I hurriedly walked towards our folded uniforms and school bags that sat by the door.

If I didn’t get ready while I still had the energy to move, I wouldn’t have the power to leave.

As I reached for my uniform, caught up in my thoughts, I was suddenly jolted back to reality.

*Woof*

“Hmm?”

A strange squeal suddenly shook my eardrums. Surprised, I turned around to see a strange creature in the slightly ajar doorway.

“A dog? But… ”

Indeed, if you only looked at the round, two heads tall silhouette, the drooping ears, and the short tail, then it was certainly a stray dog. However, the problem lay in the color of its fur and eyes.

Because those colors were…

“What’s the matter, onee-sama?”

Kokomi, who noticed something strange, came to my side. Before I knew it, the dog had invaded the room with an unusual whining sound.

Kokomi was just as surprised as I was at the sight of it. She then gave voice to the question I had.

Thanks for reading on patreon.com/maldfrogsclub ! Join us in talking about ANIMT at discord.gg/wxSdrsn

“A dog, huh? But, uh, isn’t that fur and eye color exactly the same as… onee-sama’s?”

As if to answer for me, the dog whimpered again.

That’s right.

This dog-like creature had the same light pink hair as me, and its eyes were the same color as mine: amber.

It’s not just that the colors were close. If I transformed into a dog, I would look exactly like this. We were the same in every way.

First of all, is there such a thing as a dog with light pink fur? Real-life wasn’t a manga.

Anyway, a dog shouldn’t be left to wander the campus. I reached out my hand to pet it, but, before I could get close…

“What?”

“Yikes!”

My body gently floated up into the air.

No, I wasn’t the only one floating in the air. Kokomi, my uniform, my bag, and everything around us hovered about a meter off the ground too. The dog floated higher than my line of sight, wagging its tail in a pleased manner.

As I looked down, the floor looked so far away. I clutched my skirt and desperately attempted to regain my bearings.

This phenomenon was the result of magic, no doubt about it. It’s probably B-rank levitation magic… but who in the world cast it? It might be relatively simple magic, but to use it on not only two people, but all of the objects around us, was far from simple. So who was capable of such a feat?

“O-Onee-sama, look!”

“Eh?”

When I looked up in response to Kokomi’s voice, I saw the dog flailing its short arms and legs as if it was dancing. Darting around in all directions to match the dog’s movements was… my clover hairpin! I had taken it off and placed it beside my uniform so it wouldn’t get broken during training.

At second glance, I could tell that it was the dog controlling the hairpin.

“Onee-sama, it’s that dog! That dog-like creature is the caster of this magic!”

It seems that Kokomi’s thoughts and mine coincided.

It was hard to believe, but that dog-like creature could use magic.

And it was even more skilled at magic than I am!

*Woof*

“Ah!”

With a snap, the doggie sucked my decorative pin into its mouth.

Just as I thought, the spell suddenly ended, and everything floating fell to the ground. Kokomi and I weren’t an exception: we landed magnificently on our butts. What followed was us wriggling in pain from that fall.

“Ouch… I don’t know what’s going on anymore… Kokomi, are you okay?”

“Wow, I’m fine, but… more importantly, that dog… ”

“Eh, oh!”

While I was distracted by the pain, the dog took the opportunity to head towards the door and run off… or should I say fly away! The dog was floating through the air like a cloud, and…

----And my clover hairpin was still in its mouth!

“Hey, wait! Hey!”

I stood up hurriedly and chased after it.

Since it was so late in the day, there were no signs of other students. I ran after the creature down the long, unpopulated corridor. I was pretty confident in my running speed, but the fatigue from the magic training had set in, and catching up to it was impossible.

It’s not like I was taking it easy, but the distance didn’t close in the slightest no matter how hard I tried… It was totally playing with me, I guess.

*Whine*

Maybe it’s because it was sucking on a pin, but the dog’s initially strange cry had become an even stranger sound, echoing in the hallway colored red by the setting sun. As it approached the stairs leading to the first floor, I became impatient. If I let it leave this floor, it’ll be even harder to catch!

But then, in a stroke of cosmic luck, I saw someone coming up the stairs out of the corner of my eye.

I raised my voice, wheezing slightly due to being out of breath.

“Please! Catch that dog!”

My voice must have reached them since they stretched out their long arms. They were no more than a silhouette, but they snagged the dog-like thing by the scruff of its neck. I breathed a sigh of relief when I could see its short limbs flailing wildly.

“I’m sorry for the suddenness, but I appreciate your… ”

As I ran over to thank them, I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw his face.

It was the one person I wasn’t expecting.

ANIMT - Chapter 14. I Was Sent To…

“… What the hell is this thing?”

He… Futaki-kun, who appeared out of the blue, lifted the rampaging dog with a quizzical expression.

I wasn’t sure what to make of this.

Still, his presence didn’t have the crushing intimidation I remembered for some reason.

“Hmm?” I tilted my head. Then, fearfully, before answering his question, I voiced my question.

“Um, Futaki-kun, why are you here?”

“Ah? Didn’t you call me?”

“Eh… ”

That’s when I noticed a familiar piece of paper hanging out of his pocket. That’s the paper plane I sent, I’m sure of it.

So that meant…

“Futaki-kun, did you come… because I called you?”

Even though I was the one who sent him the letter, I gave him a look of sheer disbelief. I’m sorry, Kokomi, I had looked down on your idea. I thought that, if he even bothered to read it, he would throw it away and ignore the summons.

At my words, his face contorted in displeasure, and he muttered unhappily.

“… Wouldn’t it be bad if I didn’t come after that?”

----Futaki-kun must be delirious.

I don’t know what on earth changed in him, but this was a reaction that I never thought possible from him. This is the first time he and I had even had a proper conversation.

When I thought about it, he had always called me a dumb bitch and didn’t bother to remember my name; the name of his own partner! But, when he saw the name on the letter, he knew it was me?

And after reading such a disappointing letter, he actually came?

No way. No way.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling, forgetting the situation I was in entirely.

“Hey, what are you laughing at?”

“It’s nothing, you lout. Nothing at all!”

----How could I not be happy?

He raised his eyebrows in an increasingly foul mood.

I’m not sure what to do, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who would find this hilarious.

“… More importantly, what’s with this creature?”

“Yeah, I’m not sure either. It ran away with my precious hairpin in its mouth, so I was just chasing it, when… ”

“Is this the pin?”

Futaki-kun quickly pulled the hairpin out of the dog’s mouth and placed it in my hand. I wrapped it in a tissue to wipe away the drool and carefully tucked it into the pocket of my gym uniform. I would wash it clean later.

“Thank you so much for your help. And you even went to the trouble of reading my letter and coming here. Thank you, Futaki-kun.”

Futaki-kun leveled a subtle expression at me that was hard to describe, as I thanked him with a big smile on my face. I was still giddy with the lingering feeling of happiness. Just as he was about to lash out at me with his signature harsh words, I heard pattering footsteps from behind me. Kokomi appeared. Her chest rose and fell sharply out of exhaustion.

“I’m glad I managed to catch up with you, onee-sama… I’m not sure what else we can do.”

“For now, take some deep breaths. Deep breaths, deep breaths.”

She hadn’t met Futaki-kun before, so she was probably struggling to ask, “Who is this guy?” She must have wanted to question him, but she was breathing so hard that she couldn’t form the words to do so.

*Whine*

The dog, which had been quiet in Futaki-kun’s grasp until now, suddenly slipped out of his hands and safely floated to the ground, taking advantage of the relaxed atmosphere.

No sooner than I let out a squeak, it raised its paws in a Hail Mary and squealed *Woof woof!*

A blue light enveloped the three of us.

“What the hell? More levitation magic?”

“No, this is different! This is… !”

I made a light sound with a swoosh, and gravity disappeared from my body for a moment. Next, my vision distorted languidly, and mild dizziness hit me.

“Ugh.”

I opened my closed eyes, and before I knew it, the scenery had changed completely.

Several long lab benches lined up in even intervals, and unfamiliar chemicals lined the shelves; I, unfortunately, knew this place all too well. We were in the… chemistry room.

“What the hell is going on? Did that dog do something to us?”

“Yes. That was probably ‘transference magic.’ In simple terms, teleportation. It’s an A-ranked magic in terms of difficulty, and it should require an extremely high amount of magical power to pull-off. Moreover, no ordinary magic could precisely move us from the hallway of the training building to the chemistry room in the special building… ”

Futaki-kun and Kokomi, who had transferred with me, calmly analyzed the situation. Meanwhile, the perpetrator, a dog-like creature, was leisurely floating above us.

The chemistry room was supposed to be his stronghold, however, there was no sign of Kusaka-sensei. I glanced at the door to see if he had just stepped out momentarily, but it seemed locked from the outside.

I couldn’t butt into the conversation of advanced magic between them. Futaki-kun may have been a delinquent, but his grades were rather good. God truly was unfair. Instead, I observed my surroundings in my own way. And I came to a sudden realization.

----The door to the chemistry prep room, which was usually tightly locked, had been left slightly ajar.

*Whine*

The dog flew to my side and pushed my back with its body. It was guiding me towards… that forbidden room.

I gulped and put my hand on the handle of the door.

This dog, for reasons unknown, seemed to want to show me the contents of this room. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious too.

I wondered what was so important in this room that the devilish teacher tried so hard to conceal.

It was only my intuition, but for some reason, I also felt that whatever might be in this room probably had something to do with the dog and by proxy, myself.

For example, why did he hate me so much? I felt that there was definitely a hint to this question behind this door.

Sweat beaded on the doorknob in my grip, and my heart pounded heavily in my chest.

And just as I was about to open the door boldly, a voice sharply cut through the room.

“What are you guys doing in here!”
