And keep in mind that this was only the 2nd chapter of the novel. Unlike the anime, which focused on developing the character of Violet first, in the novel you drown in this maelstrom of emotions from the get-go. "Mom is crying. Sorry. Sorry for making you cry. That wasn’t my intention. I just wanted you to take care of your own body. So that… So that… I could be with you even for a second longer, if possible. That was it. Is this… my fault? Am I being selfish? Was being together with her… something so bad to wish for?"
