Oops - the episode I can't wait for is the one after the next one.

It's tough to compare ST to Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason. Both gentleman were extremely talented.

You know something is up when Alex starts with - - "We'll start with the Gorilla" ..... Given your reaction on this one and a Piece of the Action I am REALLY looking forward to your reaction to the next one.

Yes, the Mugatu is hilarious, but it truly does bring about two major story arcs in this episode! First attack brings Kirk to a vulnerable state so he is beholdant to Tyree's wife and the second attack brings about the phaser becoming center stage in the "weapons war". This is a great episode, because it reminds us again how the Kirk/Spock/McCoy Triade works. This time, Kirk is deprived of Spock's logic and he must make his decision based upon his intuition and McCoy's passionate responses. Many future episodes will have different combinations of one with another.....or even one without the others! It makes for great storytelling. Another useful fact, is that this episode is yet another "morality play" for Gene Roddenberry. The Vietnam conflict was huge at the time of this episode and it does debate the issue of arming one side against the other!

Roddenberry had his strengths, but he definitely had his weaknesses (and unfortunately some of his biggest weaknesses are still to come). This was definitely a Cold War allegory, as you say it was (more specifically about the Viet Nam War), and there are some very strong themes in it, but in the end, there were just too many gimmicks.

Well, we got the Halloween bit with the albino were-ape attacking out of nowhere.

The look on your faces when that Mugatu attacked... haha :D

You have to remember. In 1966-1969, Star Trek was unparalleled in its depth of storytelling. In fact, the series was almost cancelled after the second season, but a letter-writing campaign spared it for another year. Even though it was cancelled after the 3rd year, reaching 3 years, it made it to syndication and could go into re-runs. Had it been cancelled after just 2 years, it would never have been heard from again. That letter-writing campaign literally changed history, given how Trek impacted movie-making, culture, etc. We have cell phones because the inventor wanted to create a device like Star Trek’s communicator. The show is responsible for other inventions and innovations. Back during the season this episode aired, these were the top 20 TV shows. None compare to the depth that Trek possessed, even though some are still beloved. The Andy Griffith Show The Lucy Show Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Gunsmoke Family Affair Bonanza The Red Skelton Show The Dean Martin Show The Jackie Gleason Show Saturday Night at the Movies Bewitched The Beverly Hillbillies The Ed Sullivan Show The Virginian Friday Night Movies Green Acres The Lawrence Welk Show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour Gentle Ben Tuesday Night at the Movie
