FIRST TIME WATCHING Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) REACTION

Comments

Still my favorite HP movie (and Book - I read it 16 times!!!!!) Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men, Gravity) directed the hell out of this one. Kinda wish he could've stayed on for the other films. I love his style. The other movies get bigger and more epic - but this is still the best directed one. It also has the best score. I love all the HP soundtracks, but the third one is my favorite. Ah and Lupin....finally a great teacher. So sad he couldn't stay. I love him. Daniel Radcliffe developed so much as an actor, you really notice it here. Gary Oldman - the greatest actor of all time. Playing my second favorite character (after Snape. Alan is of course legendary as well). I'm really curious what Gary Oldman movies you have seen besides HP, The dark knight trilogy and Apes. Have you seen Léon- The Professional or The fifth element? because they would make for incredible reactions!

Ninaofthe90s

I'm late to the party and I don't know if it was figured put by you or told to you but it won't be mentioned in the movies like it was in the books. Moony wormtail padfoot and prongs are lupin peter serious and james potter. Peter turns to a rat serious a dog and James a stag so they can spend time with lupin as a werewolf in the shreaking shack and made the muraders map to escape the castle during the full moon

Rigs216

Does anyone else want them to react to starkid? Not just their potter musicals but them? I know there YouTube stuff wouldn’t get copyrighted so- The people on YouTube and patreon could get something special. They’d have so much fun I think

Ashlyn Grizzle

people like to hate on the 4th movie because of its inaccuracy regarding the books, but its one of my favorite movies by far, the scenery, the character development, the tension, Goblet of Fire is a VERY enjoyable watch and i can wait to see your amazing reaction, the movies have been great so far

Sand Man

RIP Michael Gambon

Makondan

I didn't see these movies until years later, but this was definitely my favorite. The twists, time travel, and Gary Oldman were all positives for me.

DustmanNorochj

I agree with you guys on the pace of these reactions. I've tried several times to rewatch these films and I start losing interest after the third or fourth movie. I think monthly is the perfect schedule...especially watching it with you guys!

Michael Celia

i did the no-no by reading the book JUST before the movie came out and i was SO disappointed of all the things they cut out. I thought it was the worst movie so far....BUT, knowing what they have to do to cut the movie within the time limit...over time, the 5th movie became my favorite (book is still my favorite too). Took awhile...but yeah, sometimes reading the book then watching the movie is a no-no :)

adam99x

Man the fourth one is the best one I can't wait till you guys get to that one please hurry up 😭🙏😅

Mackendie

The movies keep getting better and better. The last of the movie series released when I was 16 (im now 29) and I watch the entire collection a few times annually.

Peter Ceniceros

Amazing reaction, now it's about to become veeeeery serious

Racanelli

Love the Harry Potter reactions just so long between them hahahah ! keep up the great content guys

Eoghan O'Sullivan

i never really was a massive fan of this one...however i can safely say with confidence after watching it with you two, it's become one of my favourites although number 5 will forever be my absolute favourite, can not WAIT for you to watch that one and i really hope you like it <3

Leo Challoner

One of my faves. Not only because of the tonal shift, and the fantastic new elements to the story, the truly creepy dementors, the deeper connections to Harry and the past. But also because here we get more focus on Hermione as 'the brightest witch of her age'. (Which is a better written line here than in the book.) And it's just not know-it-all lip service. Watching Hermione and Harry get things done is a joy.

Octavia

IN AZKABAN!

Ae Jae Meade

Totally different topic but still a cool detail, Sirius Black is the one whom gave Hagrid the flying motorbike. Sirius also writes a letter for Harry at the end giving permission to go into hogsmead which is good enough for Dumbeldore (incase you wonder why he's aloud freely later on as its never addressed). Oh and finally, Snape as the Potions Master gave Lupin a potion every month which is what Sirius asked about. The potion basically just makes the transition smoother, less painful, and makes him docile.

Ae Jae Meade

This was an amazing reaction, really enjoyed it! Now we wait..

Eve

Don't know what's been said as i haven't scrolled the comments but as much as I love this film, it leaves out key importances from the book. Such as the Marunders Map. The map was created by the four friends James, Remus, Sirius, and Peter. They knew the in and outs of Hogwarts. Lupin was a werewolf since a young age so Dumbledore planted the Whomping Willow over the tunnel leading to the shrieking shack for him to turn safely during the full moon. Dumbledore then encouraged rumors that it was haunted to explain the "shrieking" heard in the village. When his friends found out they all studied to become illegal animagi (you have to register to become one, McGonagall is one). They mastered it by their 5th year. James became a Stag, Sirius the Dog, and Peter the Rat. Together they would roam the grounds as werewolves don't attack animals (unless they attack him). They then had nicknames to go with their transformations to keep it secret. Lupin- Moony, Peter- Wormtail, Sirius -Padfoot, and James-Prongs.

Ae Jae Meade

I was surprised you didn't recognize Professor Trelawney. I mean the actress. 🤓

Nadine 🇨🇭

Lupin has always been my favorite teacher as well! So warm and wise

FedeM

It's not kid movie anymore, it's teenager movie. That's why HP saga is so amazing, there was this whole generation that started watching HP as kids and they grew up along with characters. Because of it, every movie is more adult and darker than previous one.

Hubert Asztabski

Once a month HP reactions are so hard to wait for but it makes these reactions so much better 💜

Alyssa Dyson

I love the new DUMBLEDORE. He’s who I think of when I think of the character. I love Daniel’s acting in the films. I never felt like it wasn’t good or believable.

Caitlin Harris

Elder scrolls online- the prophet is dumbledore. Lol

Tylor Smith

I personally prefer Gambon's (this new one) Dumbledore much more. He brings warmth and cunning to the character. He's not as mystical as Harris's version but he is more hands on. He is much more like Gandalf the White. Very knowledgeable and powerful and participatory

Maggie Barbour

I love Harry’s new attitude he’s becoming kinda badass. Harry, Ron and Hermione also make a badass trio

James

Agreed (though I do think Chamber of Secrets is pretty much trash). This is the movie that changed the tone for the better, and Goblet of Fire hammered home that this was the new direction of the franchise.

Jeff K

Fun fact: J.K. Rowling drew inspiration for Professor Lupin from her favorite teacher during her school days

Miles

This is where the series really ramps up in quality, not that 1 and 2 weren't great but the story plus the amazing performances from Gary Oldman and David Thewlis really elevate it. The scene between Snape, Series and Lupin is just perfection! Unfortunately this also marks the start of huge plot points being left out that could be confusing for movie only fans. So much about the Marauders identities is left out but some comments have explained that already.

Michael

I threw 5 across the room at 2:45 AM the day I bought it at a midnight party after reading the last page. Lmao (But, yes. My favorite one too. Movie 5 was not my favorite...that belongs to this one and 6 in a tie. 😉 )

Jessi

This is my favorite movie of the series, my favorite book is 5

Sassy monster

Mostly retired, did not mean dead 😂

Take a Ticket

This is both the best movie and book imo. True turning point in the tone of the series.

Nathan Hill

When reading it for the first time when i was growing up, this is easily the best book in the series and one of the best books i have ever read. Movie does well to adapt it but the reading experience was second to none.

PhoenixReturns

*squeal* You've made my day Rob & Trin!!

Kaylee Smeaton

I love that this series is brimming with the greatest of UK actors. And they all fit into this world so brilliantly... bolstering but never really distracting from the trio of kids.

Octavia

About time you guy dropped this 😢😅

Mackendie

Loved this movie. In your outro, I think if you went back in time, you would have done well in understanding the movies as I remember that at least here in America, our schools were adding Harry Potter books into their curriculum in literature. So, most likely you would have read the books and would have watched the films to see how the events unfolded on the big screen. This is my first go around with Harry Potter and, I am enjoying the journey!

Anthony Ancona

Lupin means Wolf, I believe, and Sirius is the Dog Star (it is part of the Canis Major constellation. What the characters were was hidden in plain sight. :-)

Anika

Probably my favorite film of the series and one of my favorites for the books.. You might've noticed besides the much darker tone, that the castle grounds have changed a bit since the first 2 films..The Whomping Willow and Hagrid's Hut are in different spots, there's a really rickety bridge of questionable engineering, and the steep hillside..Also the castle itself is a bit different, but for the most part I think, good changes overall..And I don't think it changes much for the rest of the series which is good, because having a static and now iconic location such as Hogwarts change every movie would be too confusing.. Which makes the fact that this was John Williams last score for HP that much more sad, because you also need consistency in score..Thankfully they kept the main themes for the most part, with each composer after this adding their own flair, but it really muddies the waters for me.. (But I'm just a big soundtrack guy) I would've loved to see how Richard Harris had done in the later films, but in my opinion, I think this is Gambon's best performance of Dumbledore..Mostly because of the whole time turner bit with him 'calmly' distracting the Minister.. And yeah, the adults in the Harry Potter films really bring their all, even for this silly world of magic and wizards, pretty much perfect casting all the way through..

Superpotroast

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't have added that tidbit of info into the movie..Probably take out the Whomping Willow scene which adds nothing to the film at all and you know they're not going to get hurt, and it sticks out like a sore thumb as all non-book scenes tend to do..

Superpotroast

This was my first Harry Potter movie, and is still my favorite :)

Amanda Logsdon

Watching the show at the moment. Dawn French is still alive and well!

Anthony Ancona

The Fact they took this badass defensive line “if you want to kill Harry you’ll have to kill us too” from Ron in the books & gave it to Hermione in the film shows how the different directors for the various films just wanted to use Ron as the comedian :/ which bums me out. Definitely my favorite of the first 3 regardless of that though. The cinematography was AMAZING!

Jack's World

Fun facts about Harry Potter part 3: 1. In this film Emma Watson (Hermione) was originally supposed to slap Tom Felton (Draco) they were practicing it and she misunderstood and actually punched him in the face. 2. During the filming of the sleeping bag scene Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) asked for his sleeping bag to be placed next to a girl he had a crush on. Michael Gambon and Alan Rickman played a joke on him by putting a fart machine in his sleeping Bag and setting it off to embarrass him. 3. In memory of Richard Harris, the reason he accepted the role of Dumbledore (before his passing) was because his 11 year old granddaughter threatened to never speak to him again if he didn’t Enjoy 😊

Amanda

Don’t know if you noticed that Sybil Trelawney, the wacky Divination professor, was played by the great Emma Thompson. And Gary Oldman is just perfect as Sirius. The caliber of acting, and actors, in these films must’ve been like a master class for all the younger actors just starting out.

MaggieS61

I have to come back to comment now that I've finished the reaction lol I was SO excited for this one, Prisoner of Azkaban is still hands down my favorite movie! The movies get better and better and they're all amazing, but this one holds a special place in my heart. This is the movie that most fans note as the first real tonal shift in this series. Everything about this movie has a darker, edgier, more mature feel compared to the first. Definitely Halloween vibes like you said! Some information that was left out of this movie that's not necessarily important for the series, but is nice to know: the Marauder's who created the Marauder's Map were James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. They were all friends in school and created the map in school. And Remus was a werewolf even as a student there and the Whomping Willow was actually placed on the grounds because of him, because it guarded the tunnel that took him to Shrieking Shack every full moon, which is why it had the reputation of being haunted, because of his screams and howls. The Marauders all became Animagi so that they could keep Remus company on the nights he turned. James Potter could turn into a stag (like the shape of Harry's Patronus) and his name was Prongs, Sirius Black is obviously a black dog named Padfoot, Remus is Moony because he's a werewolf and Peter Pettigrew is a rat, earning him the name Wormtail. And obviously they have some history with Snape! I'm so glad you guys commented on the acting quality of that scene in the Shrieking Shack! David Thewlis, Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman just absolutely killing it in that scene is one of the reasons I love this movie so much. And it's something even Daniel Radcliffe and the other actors have mentioned before, how amazing it was for them to be kids and be on set with these powerhouse actors and just get to watch them work. Dumbledore's new actor Michael Gambon is very well-known and has been acting for over 60 years so I'm sure you recognize him from somewhere. I don't know how I'm gonna be able to wait til October for Goblet of Fire, but I'll do my best lol So glad you enjoyed this one.

sierra's reaction corner

Literally same lmao

Marek Pietruszka

Something that does not get mentioned in the movie is that Lupin was bitten by a werewolf as a child and he became friends with Sirius, James and Peter who then learned how to become Animagus to still be able to hang out with Lupin during his werewolf nights. James's Animagus was a stag, Peter's a rat, and Sirius the dog. Also, the Marauder's Map was created by James (Prongs), Lupin (Moonie), Peter (Wormtail) and Sirius ( Padfoot), so that was the reason that Lupin knew exactly how the Marauder's Map works.

Junie Tunes

The decision to push the WB logo all the way towards us is just perfect. Idk if that was the directors decision or the studio but it was a great decision.
