Trying Something New!

Hey everyone!

I'm working on two new stories right now. Both are fantasy/tower/litrpg, but in very different ways. I can't decide which one to focus on first, so instead... I'll leave it up to you! Over the next day or so, I'll post the first three chapters from each story, and then you can vote on which one you prefer me to take on full time first. I'll continue to write both, but one will sit on the backburner (I'll write it as I feel like) and the other will become a new weekly series!

For those who don't want to get updates that aren't mtpddat, no fear. I'm only doing this for the first three chapters each, after which the stories will ascend to the $7+ tiers, where they will live until the time comes to release them on RR.

How will this affect mtpddat's schedule? It won't! I'm actually doing this because I'm way too far ahead on mtpddat for my own comfort and I need a way to distract myself. I usually write two stories at once.

Below is a short description of each story! I'll post the poll after the chapters are posted.

Story 1: Predatory System

A young man awakens in the Tower with amnesia and, oddly enough, the role of an NPC. He sets off to best the Tower with his new role and all the restrictions and benefits that come with it... and his vague memories of being a Ranker! But wait, why does the System seem to be... a bit dangerous? If he didn't know better, he'd almost assume it was there to devour players!

LitRPG style. A game-like setting. Modern world outside the Tower.

Story 2:  The Tower Must Fall

The Tower arrived abruptly several hundred years ago, and with it came the System. Those blessed by the System were sent into the Tower to fight the monsters within. Go forth, Heroes!

Hundreds of years later, a civilization has arisen within the Tower itself, as everyone who awakens the System is sent into the Tower. The first floor is a sprawling city full of newcomers and those born into the Tower and its System.

The son of the first floor's mafia boss has had enough of those with strength being given all the responsibility and none of the benefits. Why should those with the System have to fight the Tower for the rest of the world that they aren't even allowed out into? He's going to take down the Tower... and then, the world!

Pure fantasy setting. LitRPG-lite.

Comments

Yeah, it's dumb that they don't have one by now considering how common this problem is. Only other solution I'm aware of is keeping chapters on Google docs and posting view only links on Patreon.

Robert Mullins

Neither of those work for me, unfortunately. Patreon really needs a tiered release scheduler.

Advice shared from Selkiemyth: Here’s the tldr: take the released chapter. Mark it only for the new tier, check “notify patrons” Then immediately edit it again This time for everyone with permission Chapter released for everyone and they’re notified Plan b is to just unlock it for people And let the lower tier find it themselves Unfortunately, that first part requires manually posting rather than scheduled. Other option I've seen is having a regularly updated public post with links to recent chapters for each tier.

Robert Mullins

The problem with having a tier further ahead is that Patreon is not set up for that. I'd have to double upload every chapter to release it twice, once in each tier, so essentially I'd have to upload two copies of the novel. If you know of a better way, reach out, because I'd love to be able to do that, but I haven't figured it out.

noct

Considering today's cliff, this seems like an optimal day to make a decision one way or another.

Robert Mullins

If you have an annoyingly large backlog you could always create a tier further ahead or do an occasional bonus chapter.

Like the predatory system idea! The other one would be cool (I think) if he's not trying to conquer the tower, but rather escape it into the real world. Otherwise it just sounds like every other tower climber series

Notcreepycreeper

I hope that's very unlikely. Your dungeon story makes me confident it's not just lightning striking once or twice. And honestly $5 is crazy low for how much of the main fic we get a week, at the crazy once a day.

Green0Photon

I understand! Ultimately, it's your choice how much you want to donate, and if I'm writing something you don't like, naturally, you should choose the right tier for you.

noct

Totally understand why you'd want to write LitRPG though. Does well on RR. Getting readers is very important.

Green0Photon

I mostly hate LitRPG. I really liked the dungeon fic *because* how it wasn't LitRPG. Literally the first non LitRPG Dungeon fic I've ever seen. You're a very skilled writer. So I'd give whatever you try a shot. And there do exist LitRPGs that I can like, namely Worth the Candle. But that's a high bar. The most important bit is to avoid the toxic story structure that LitRPG forces you into. How it makes the world building feel less complete, and how there's the mismatch that makes things feel fake. I'll read whatever as long as it's not a bad LitRPG, otherwise I'll unfortunately have to go back down to $5.

Green0Photon

Based on description, second one seems more interesting. I remember ~3 stories that could roughly match synopsis of story 1.

Faiir

I like the feeling of predatory system more, I think.

Patrick Randles

From the synopsis the second one seems better. I like that the MC wants to basically go from a forced conscript to a cultivator.
