Buffy 7x7 Conversations with Dead People

First, I kind of want to apologise for my scared and wimpy behaviour in this one 😭 this is without a doubt one of the most frightening episodes I've seen on Buffy. It was brilliant, and I loved it, and it's left me with SO many questions, but there were many moments I had to view through squinted eyes! I didn't enjoy editing those moments, let me tell you 🤣 but I did see a lot more the second time around haha

I loved how there were multiple stories going on at once, and they all blended together. It was just SO well done. I have no idea what is going on, but I do speak about all the characters in the outro if you want to hear a bit more of my thoughts about that! Goodness, I love this season.

P.S. The thumbnail is a bit different to normal - I both like it and am also second guessing. You guys can see it before it may possibly change to a regular one 😅

Ryan, THANK YOU!! My goodness, that is an incredible thing for me to hear 😭🥰🥰

Juliette Gaming

WOOHOO!! I'm so glad you liked it! As soon as I saw the title of the episode like that, I had to use it 😅

Juliette Gaming

The thumbnail is perfect! It shows the absolute ride that you go on during episodes like this 🤣🥰

I love this episode so, so much. This is the episode that really kicks off the whole arc of the final season into high gear. I'm excited to watch along with you. You are by far my favorite Buffy reactor and I've watched along with many of them through the years.

Ryan Martinez

It's quite a different performance in Conversations

Andy Luke

He had extra organs and wanted carrying!

Andy Luke

Jeremy - this is the coolest coding thing ever. I haven't decoded it, don't worry 😅 I just want to say how cool this is as I've never seen it before. I think the trio would be able to crack that within an instant, no rot13 needed 🤣

Juliette Gaming

It was such a brilliant episode, Claire! I can't watch the scenes with Joyce on the couch as it is just too much for me. I really don't want to see it ☹️ Poor Dawn. She is such a brave girl. It's fascinating how we all just have accepted her as Buffy's sister, thinking back to the beginning of Dawn. I wouldn't have it any other way 💜

Juliette Gaming

Holden has such a familiar looking face! It's probably because of Firefly, though I admit I don't remember him from there 😅

Juliette Gaming

Anchovies, anchovies, you're so delicious I love you more Than all the other fishes! I can no longer eat anchovies without thinking about that rhyme. This is an amazing episode. Emotional, scary, occasionally funny, with great music, and a connection to the season arc. All the staples of Buffy.

If you thought Holden looked familiar he played the manic army buddy of Mal and Zoe towards the end of Firefly. Yeah. I can think of few instances were Buffy had gone full in on the horror like this episode and a brave choice to send the worst of it at Dawn. Scrappy-Door no more! Conversations does well with its collection of vignette, blending the introspection and big picture stuff. What stuck out for me this time was Buffy talking about her mental health and just how huge that illness is a part of her character. I guess it's hard not to feel the voices of superiority when you're the one chosen in a generation. It's the fact but not how she wants to feel. She loves her friends and so feels inferior to balance the ego she never asked for.

Andy Luke

Absolutely don't apologise for being scared during this episode. Even as a hardcore horror fan the scenes with Joyce on the couch really got to me when I first watched this episode. Definitely another one I would put on the list of favourite Buffy episodes ever. Just so good, and a great concept.

Claire Eyles

Not to spoil, but the Spike storyline really pays off. They do a great job since episode one of stringing us along with questions. Stay tuned :)

Dusty

I think I fixed. Thanks for pointing it out. Seems good? I didn't read the rot thing.

⬆️ SPOILER HERE. I'll put my explanation into rot13 (punch it into rot13.com to decode), so the comment author can know what they said, and maybe edit it out: Whyvrggr qbrfa'g xabj gung vg'f "gur svefg" lrg -- gurer'f pyhrf nobhg jung gur guvat-gung-qribhef-lbh-sebz-orybj vf, naq gung vgf n ersrerapr onpx gb "nzzaqf" sebz frnfba 3 -- ohg gung'f abg pbasvezrq hagvy n yvggyr yngre. Probably my favorite episode of the season. Buffy gets a little bit of the therapy she so needs. Buffy really got into her relationship with Spike in a honest way. She admitted that she thinks Spike loved her, in his own way. And she was with him because she was hurting, and wanted to hurt. She admitted she treated him badly, And that he treated her badly as well. She has a connection to him that isn't matched by Willow or Xander. He knows the Slayer part of her. I also love the intro and outro of the episode. Back to the Bronze. The music was haunting and very Buffy. In the intro it showed what they were doing on a typical evening, specifically November 12, 2002 8:01 PM which is when it originally aired. My favorite Xander episode as well. I think that Holden was who and what he stated, a vampire. Cassie was a manifestation of the "beneath you" being. And Dawn experienced an old fashioned poltergeist haunting. Where I was left guessing whether the Joyce she saw was really her. Three different types of conversations with dead people. We also saw the ghost of Warren talking with Andrew, the third Trio guy. As well as the unknown lady having a conversation with Spike.

If you are truly interested in the philosophy of soul-having vs. non-soul-having creatures, when you have completed the series, search for the topic as it relates to Buffy and observe all of the bits, bytes and pixels spilled (wasted?) discussing it. Apparently souls have a special significance in the Buffy/Angel-verse.

David Schmidt

I’ve read that there was a plan to have Xander talk to Jesse (his friend that got turned into a vampire in the two-part pilot), but Eric Balfour wasn’t available and they didn’t have time for it anyway. They also talk in the commentary about wanting Anya to talk to Halfrek, but they didn’t end up filming it for similar reasons.

Lime Pie

There is a great DVD commentary track with this episode with a bunch of people. Nick Marck, the director, Jane Espenson and Drew Goddard, two of the writers, Tom Lenk and Danny Strong, Andrew and Jonathan. Also, this is the only episode for the whole run of Buffy in which Xander does not appear. No reason except that they just didn't write him in as they had no dead person for him to talk with.

David Schmidt

It fits well into the interior logic--- even if Dawn does see (ahem) Kristine Sutherland's 'character.' From the POV of the antagonist, bringing in 'Tara' might be the psychic bridge too far--- given everything that 'Cassie' wants to say to Will and convince her to do...

Chris Carman

Having Tara there would have broke us 😭 Cassie works so well, and it was wonderful to see the actor again. I adore her voice and her overall vibe!

Juliette Gaming

Very well deserved!

Juliette Gaming

WOW that is so cool to know! It all works so well!

Juliette Gaming

All of the stories in this episode are so fascinating! I think my favorite has to be Buffy's though. As much as the show focuses on Buffy, it has never delved this deep into her, and Jonathan M. Woodward is a delight as Holden. The real reason why Tara didn't appear is because Amber Benson wasn't available, but Marti (writer for the Willow scenes) made it believable imo by having Cassie play on Willow's guilt by telling her that she didn't deserve to see Tara and using Tara as incentive for Willow to kill herself. Real creepy stuff.

Lime Pie

A really fantastic episode which also ended up winning an HUGO Award.

Daniel

Such a unique episode and one of my favourites! The concept is amazing, starting with the opening montage of Buffy, Willow & Dawn going about the evenings whilst Angie Hart sings Blue at the Bronze. The episode then proceeds to tell five seperate stories where no one interacts with anyone else. Amazing episode well except maybe for Dawn & Willow who go through the emotional wringer whilst speaking with their dead person, oh and Jonathan who is killed by Andrew! Joss wrote the Buffy scenes, Marti Noxon the Willow scenes, Jane Espenson wrote for Dawn & Drew Goddard wrote the Jonathan/Andrew scenes.

Dyrla

This episode was SO GOOD! I adore season 7 so far. It might end up being my favourite!

Juliette Gaming

NEIL 🤣🤣 Poor Holden! I did like their conversation, but I will admit that it was probably the least exciting convo out of all of them. Buffy must have the patience of a saint!

Juliette Gaming

Great episode except for one little thing. That dude Buffy was talking to was insufferable. I don't know how he managed to live as long as he did being that annoying! Juliette 💜😊 thanks for another great reaction, and have yourself an excellent weekend.

Neil Hanson

This episode really sets season 7 in motion.

Kurt VC

First off--- no apologies needed. This episode is *SICK!* :D (Also--- I love the final season, and don't get me wrong: they're all good. But--- I feel like this is clearly the episode that kicks S7 into high gear...)
