Doctor Who 5x8 Hungry Earth - Early Access CLEAN

I spent some time in the intro of this episode talking about something that fascinated me!

THE BOW TIES.

Maybe I was very slow to pick up on this, and I am slightly embarrassed and ashamed it took me so long 🀣 But I was put onto the notion by the colour of the bow ties in Amy's choice. I only remembered ever seeing a red tie, so when I saw a blue tie, I thought "THAT'S the dream, as the tie is wrong!"

I didn't think too much of it, until I went to edit the Vampire episode where I saw he had a BLUE TIE ON! I was shocked!

I don't know if it has any significance (to be honest, I don't want to know if it does as I'm hoping it gets explained at some point in the show!) or maybe I've just lost the plot.

But here I am, 8 episodes in, and I've finally noticed there's different colour tie and suspenders 🀣

If you don't have young ones there's no reason you should know The Gruffalo but I loved reading it to my kids, doing the voices etc. it's a great book. Also, in the role of Nasreen Chaudhry is a very well know and respected comedienne called Meera Syal, probably best known in the UK for a comedy sketch show in the late 90's called Goodness Gracious Me which poked fun at British popular culture from an Asian perspective with her then co-star, now husband, Sanjeev Bhaskar. I highly recommend looking up "Going Out for an English" on YT, it's hilarious. Great stuff as always Jules, glad I only have to wait a day now for the second part. <3

The Rising Ape

In all the years I've been watching this, I've never paid attention to the Doctor's ties before, but now that you've mentioned it, I'll be obsessed with it as well as I watch along with you to try and figure it out πŸ˜‚

BORING SCIENCE: The Silurian Period occurred 443mil. years ago and last 24.8 mil. years. Life on Earth at that time was mostly aquatic, although some plants had started to creep up onto the shores. No dinosaurs yet, although the Silurian race does resemble the Sleestaks from the old Saturday morning TV show LAND OF THE LOST.

An entire reptilian civilization in the crust of the Earth. Juliette: 'Ooh! A red tie!' Welcome to the NuWho Crew.

One of the ways to resolve the whole Time Travel Paradox issues is to make a rule: whatever event happens to a time traveler happens, regardless of whether subsequent travel negates that event. There is precedent for this: in the Season 3 finale, when the Master's plan was unmade, everyone on the Valiant still remembered it happening. Take note of this law. It will become important later. Mwahahahaha.

It’s sort of a tradition for Doctors to have a core outfit but to swap little parts of their clothing. For instance, Tennant swapped between a white shirt and a light blue shirt every once a while. He also had a blue suit with a red tie that he would use sometimes. I think this was particularly notable with 11 because of how much attention is drawn to his choice of appearance haha.

"But we've seen her 10 years in the future, she's fine, right?" One of the single most important rules of understanding Doctor Who is that time can be rewritten. Unless it can't be. Unless there is an exception. Unless the writers wants it to be. Or not. Doctor Who is so inconsistent in this that you can't be sure of anything according to logic. In other shows or books this annoys me but in Doctor Who i accepted it as part of the concept... The answer to that problem that is almost convincing is that only timelords can see whether something is a "fixed point in time" or not, whether there will be a disaster when timelines cross or not. Essentially: What works for the current episode/season/plot idea.

Oliver

I also don't think any damage is done here πŸ™‚ , I didn't want to be a know-it-all. I am just a little oversensitive when it comes to facts and science, because in important discussions I often had to deal with people who heard little bits of science and jumped to wrong conclusions and insist that they were backed up by scientists.

Oliver

Juliette, don't beat yourself up if you're not finding a significance to the bow tie color. There really is none (as in "intended"), but there are fun fan theories about it. Maybe you'll come up with some of them. (It even isn't an easter egg as far as I know, but there was a popular fan theory that it were. But that one is also wrong because it isn't consistant.) To quote the 8th doctor: "I love humans. Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there. "

Oliver

To be clear, a couple of academics that are doctor who fans wrote a paper and named their thought experiment "the silurian hypothesis." I don't think any damage is done πŸ‘πŸ»

SeeJay

I meant to write hypothesis, not theory, thanks for the correction

SeeJay

Quoting from them: "While we strongly doubt that any previous industrial civilization existed before our own, asking the question in a formal way that articulates explicitly what evidence for such a civilization might look like raises its own useful questions related both to astrobiology and to Anthropocene studies."

Oliver

I don't want to atttack you, but PLEASE do not phrase it like that. This is how pseudoscience, conspiracy theories and the like spread. In your comment it sounds as if this was actually a scientific theory that suggests there were such "intelligent life on earth before humans". But that is not a fact. The scientist made a thought experiment about the means and method that science can or can't use. They did not suggest that there actually was such a pre-human civilisation.

Oliver

Another great reaction was on YouTube and seen your video playing tavern simulator so I thought I'd give it a go and enjoy the simple tavern life πŸ˜‚

Dave

It's never been pointed out to us as an audience as far as I can remember & it doesn't affect any plot but there has been a theory on why but it is like an easter egg. Think a bit harder on the individual eps the colours appear & you might get it because it's clear you've still not got a theory which is perfectly understandable πŸ˜‰

Jason

Fun fact, there's actually a scientific theory about intelligent life on earth before humans and it's called the Silurian Theory, named after the Doctor Who creatures. The academics who came up with the theory were huge fans of the show.

SeeJay

The Silurians are old friends/foes of The Doctor. They first appeared in 1970, during the Third Doctor’s reign (Jon Pertwee). In β€˜72 an amphibious offshoot of the Silurians appeared…The Sea Devils. Again facing off against Three. They were not seen again until 1984’s Warriors of the Deep, where the Silurians and Sea Devils combine forces against Peter Davidson’s Fifth Doctor. And they were never heard from again. Until now. 😎

StealthMomo

After Amy's, "Did you shush me? Did you JUST SHOOSH ME?!" scene, I couldn't help but imagine Donna in that last scene. "Oye, you stay away from me with that thing. If you touch me, oh boy are you gonna get it! Doctor! Doctor, get in here!. DOCTOR! DOCTOR! DOCTOOOOOOOOOR!" outro.

Nebraska

I've watched Doctor Who, and even more so this Doctor, many times. I didn't notice until you pointed out. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Nebraska

The more episodes I watch, the more I LOVE HIM!

Juliette Gaming

I love the scene where Eleven is talking to Alaya, you see the world weary old man once he let's the energetic youthful mask drop, Matt Smith is just so damn good!

Michael Harrop

It's set in 2020. You shouldn't be looking for blue bow ties, you should be looking for blue covid masks!

Chris Green

Juliette, not to blow your mind or anything, but David Tennant actually wore two different coloured suits, and Christopher Eccleston had two different coloured Jumpers!! 😱😱😱 These Doctors be sneaky lol πŸ˜†

SeeJay

Also, this one has nothing to do with the plot at all, but: Amy has her nails a different color in every single episode. I don't know why, I've just always thought that was cute.

Helen

Ahhhhh I have no clue! But I still feel bad for only noticing now 🀣

Juliette Gaming

About the ties! There is a reason between the red or blue tie. It's not an important plot thing, but it does have a meaning behind it. :) I don't think we're supposed to take it as "the Doctor making a choice as he gets dresses" as much as it's a sort of easter egg... See if you can figure it out! :)

Helen
