Doctor Who 2x00 The Christmas Invasion | Full Reaction

The numbering of this season is forever going to mess me up... I've had to change my file names a few times 🤣

So, our first real episode with the new doctor and I'm pleasantly surprised! He seems lovely. Charming. And Jackie even seems to like him. What more can we ask for? A really great episode, and a bonus one too with a slightly longer length 🥰

Interesting to hear Torchwood mentioned... I know so little of it, but they definitely seem to be planting the seeds for the spin-off series. I'm still undecided about what to do about Torchwood but I'll be running a poll on the Youtube page to see what most people would like. At this stage, it would be either a) pause Doctor Who for 3 months to react to Torchwood, b) watch Torchwood by myself, with no pause to Doctor Who, c) react to Torchwood after Doctor Who is finished on the channel. I'll be running a poll closer to the end of season 2 to gather opinions, but I just wanted to let you know what I've been thinking 💜

Doctor Who 2x00 The Christmas Invasion | Full Reaction

Comments

Yeah, I might just hold off on it for now. I feel I've got so much going on anyway, to be honest! Who would have to be on pause until we've finished Torchwood and I don't want to do that... 🥹

Juliette Gaming

Aww thank you, Alec!! I am so glad you've come from the gaming side of things! Most people here are for the reactions hehe. That makes a lot of sense about Torchwood... I really don't want to break up Doctor Who as I feel that I have so much going on already. It would be a bit stressful to take on board another show. I might just wait off on watching it, or even watch it by myself 💜

Juliette Gaming

Skip all the side shows altogether, comparatively they're not very good. Plus, it will take you three years to get through DW at the current pace.

chicks dig me

I have to say that I love your user name 😅 I adore that you've been watching Who for so long... gosh, I feel like I'd know nothing compared to you! I'm loving it so much though 💜

Juliette Gaming

I've watched Doctor Who most of my life with my Doctor being Tom Baker's 4th. I thoroughly enjoyed Ecclestons run, he brought the Doctor back to life, but David Tennant very quickly became my absolute favourite. I'll say no more for now, not wanting to spoil anything, but I look forward to seeing these again with your brilliant reactions.

The Rising Ape

An interesting tidbit is that Tennant based his Doctors look on Davisons as the 5th was the Doctor he watched growing up... also, Peter Davison is the father of Georgia Moffet who is Davids wife (and also pops up in an episode later on).

The Rising Ape

It's worth thinking through what we know about the doctor's history (just from this past season, since I'm not bringing in any past or future info). He's been through a terrible war where his entire world died along with the Daleks. Remember the look on his face in the second episode when the tree lady mentioned knowing his race, bringing back memories from his past? He was the one who "I watched it happen; I MADE it happen". He is scarred from that, which really came to a head during the Dalek episode when Rose stopped him from killing the Dalek. Remember Eccleston's fury early in that episode compared to the end when he laid down his weapon? Then later in the season hoping to save the London child "Please, give me a day like this, just this once" and afterwards the joyful shout "EVERYBODY LIVES! I'm on fire!". By the end of the season the Daleks ask him "what are you, killer or coward?" and the Doctor takes his hand off the detonator and says "Coward, any day.". He's a changed man, and by the time number 10 comes along he's even further from the trauma, a whole other lifetime beyond it. It's still there as part of his history, and he's still figuring out who he is and still full of fire "No second chances, that's the kind of man I am" but he's definitely a changed man and he owes a lot of it to his time with Rose.

Paul Hess

He does seem more interested in being more invested in Rose and her family AND he seems kinder to Mickey 🤣 Win, win!

Juliette Gaming

Definitely a new vibe compared to: "Can we keep the domestics out of this?"

Paul Hess

Doctor Nine said he doesn't do sit-down family meals. Doctor Ten actually sat down for turkey & crackers.

Martin Holt

Every Doctor has a signature look. Some are quite refined, some are nerdy, and some are just plain weird. Doctor Five (Petere Davison) routinely pinned a piece of celery to his sweater vest, while Doctor Four (Tom Baker, MY Doctor) wore an absurdly long striped scarf. Doctor Nine (Eccleston) had a bad boy look - leather jacket, muted colors - while Doctor Ten looks more professorial. It makes recognizing each Regeneration much easier.

Martin Holt

Oh, pshaw. :-)

Martin Holt

'What happened to MY Doctor?' The mournful cry of every Whovian after a Regeneration.

Martin Holt

The Martians in DW first appeared in 1967 (THE ICE WARRIORS.) They are basically lizard men in armored suits. Kinda scary.

Martin Holt

UNIT was referenced in ALIENS OF LONDON/WORLD WAR III, the Slitheen two-parter.

Martin Holt

My advice would be to start watching Torchwood in your own time if you don't wish to follow a proper chronological watch order. Particularly as there won't be a unified opinion on adding the show for reactions. But don't start until you have completed series 2 of Doctor Who. Perhaps the greatest collective desire might be to see reactions to the 3rd mini series. Two fold, as it would be less of a pause, and of the 4 that one is probably the highest regarded of the series.

Daryl

New patron here! Funny thing, I first found you through your portal lets plays and had no idea you were reacting to my favorite show lol. As for torchwood, my main concern is that the first few seasons of doctor who flow together so well that to break it up with another show between would kind of break the pacing. I would definitely put a hold on it, and not even worry about it yet because torchwood wasn’t even a show at this point yet. It was just a mention in doctor who as an actual plot point. Btw i’m so glad you like the Tyler family and Mickey. The more human element introduced into the reboot/revival was such a good call. Makes it more engaging even though I still love those classic episodes lol.

Alec Campo

I watched him recently in the tv show “inside man” with Stanley Tucci as other big name. Brilliant!

Vicky N

Before I started watching along to your reactions I had only seen the episodes starring the eleventh Doctor. I've heard that for many people David Tennant is their favourite Doctor so I'm interested to see if he'll become my favourite, or if I'll still prefer the eleventh Doctor.

Neil Hanson

THAT IS SO COOL!!

Juliette Gaming

I would be happy to do that, to ensure we can just focus on Who. I did suggest something similar for X Files, and taking requests for certain episodes only and watch the ones that no one wants to see in my own time, but that caused a bit of drama in the YT comments. It's all subjective and some might not like episode X where as to another, it could be their fave one. BUT, they could always request a particular episode in that case haha. I'll think about it some more!! Thank you!!

Juliette Gaming

Thank you!! I might do that... I haven't quite decided. My main worry is that I will upset people if we break from Who for some time to watch it. Perhaps I can watch it afterwards...!

Juliette Gaming

A lot of things like UNIT or Bad Wolf or Torchwood, I don't really know what it entails but I do like when it comes up again and again! It helps to build the word in the viewers mind so we keep an ear out for it 😸

Juliette Gaming

That is a great point, James. It would be in the Prime Minister's best interest for her and for the rest of her country to do what she did. She cannot rely on the Doctor, only on her actions and people in the present!

Juliette Gaming

I think we are all a little thick at times, me without a doubt 🤣

Juliette Gaming

Have you not seen past the first season? I love that you might like this fellow more than Christopher! That is great news, Neil! It's hard because I don't like to play favourites haha but yeah, David is really good so far!!

Juliette Gaming

Thank you so much, Niall! I am thankful to have you here 💜

Juliette Gaming

Your right. I don' know why I wrote 10. I will edit correct. I would be happy with her binging the first 2 seasons, but CoE deserves special attention. However, I am sure reactors need a steady stream of content to fill, so I wouldn't be displeased with a full reaction.

Leenis

Agreed, Children of Earth stands head and shoulders above everything else. Though watching the first two seasons would provide important context. CoE, though, is only 5 episodes, not 10 - so even easier to get through. In fact, I’d be inclined to suggest Juliette watch the first two series in her own time, and then react to Children of Earth. Just my opinion.

Lloyd B

He really does have amazing range. He's also excellent in Hamlet in the theatre, and plays a fantastic villain in secret smile, and and loveable playboy in BBC version of Casanova. Oh and fun Easter egg. When he's looking throught the wardrobe at the end of this episode for his new outfit, one of the ones he picks up and looks at is the outfit from Casanova lol

x_Rhi_x

By the way, David Tennant is one of Britain’s most outstanding actors of the current era. To get an idea of his range and talent I can highly recommend the following shows: Broadchurch, in which he plays a troubled police detective. Also stars Olivia Coleman, and quite a few other people who incidentally also appear in Doctor Who at some point. Jessica Jones - a gritty Marvel superhero series, where Tennant plays the villain. Good Omens - outstanding comic fantasy based on the novel by Terry Pratchett, where Tennant plays a demon opposite Michael Sheen as an angel. There’s also a hilarious series called Staged, where he and Michael Sheen (and their families) play themselves during COVID lockdown trying to rehearse a play over Zoom. That’s just scratching the surface! That’s just scratching the surface.

Lloyd B

I like torchwood. It is definitely a different vibe, but really good. Be careful what you read, there are potential massive unwitting spoilers. That being said, I can take or leave Torchwood as a reaction with the exception of season 3 Children of the Earth. It is so good and so tightly scripted and acted. It stands alone in the Whoverse in my opinion. It is not a full season but rather 5 episode mini series covering one story that would be a real shame if you didn't react to it. Edited to fix episode number for Children of Earth.

Leenis

I'm really glad you are enjoying the new Doctor. Every Doctor has their own quirks, their own pluses and minuses. Your reactions are wonderful to watch! I think for Torchwood to make any sense, you'll have to watch a few more seasons of Doctor Who. It is a spin off, but not for a bit.... I'd highly recommend waiting until after Doctor Who, or at least, after a few more series :)

TGrimace

Very pleased you clicked with this Doctor so quickly. Even though he spends most of the episode unconscious, when he makes his entrance towards the end he certainly makes an impression! His throwaway line about being like Arthur Dent in his pajamas, by the way, is a little nod to the late author Douglas Adams. Dent is the main character in his novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Douglas Adams was also the writer of a number of excellent Doctor Who stories in the 70s. Adams passed away in 2001, before Doctor Who was revived, and I’m sure if he hadn’t he would have been writing for the new show. You’ll find little Easter eggs like that scattered through the show. Also glad you picked up on UNIT. Something I hadn’t realized before rewatching this, though, was that it appeared UNIT were based in the Tower of London- something that may come up again at some point😉.

Lloyd B

Eh. Personal tastes.

Martin Holt

I’d still hold off until at least after series 2 for continuity reasons, though.

Lloyd B

I agree with the Prime Minister. 1. The Doctor is not here all the time so we do need to be able to defend ourselves. 2. The Doctor violated the Time Lord major principle of non-interference by causing the PM to not continue. He often does interfere but always to protect humans. It is a great episode but it does lower the sense of morality of the Doctor. Not sure "morality" is the right word. It decreases my respect of him.

James Hawkins

At this point you could literally start Torchwood at any time. No worries about spoilers; I watched ALL of Torchwood before diving into the new Who, and nothing was ruined at all for me. Of course, I'm a bit thick, so there's that. 😉

Martin Holt

What he said! :-)

Paul Hess

I watched this for the first time a couple of days back and really enjoyed it. Now I don't know how popular of an opinion this is, but from the little I've seen of him so far, I think I may end up preferring this incarnation of the Doctor over the previous one.

Neil Hanson

I’ve been waiting for this! I adore series 1 with all my heart but the next couple of seasons feature some phenomenal characters, episodes and performances which are some of my favourites. Strap in, it may seem impossible, but your love for this show will grow even bigger 💖 excited to watch you on the journey, thanks for bringing us along :D
