Prologue – Trade Chat

(Adventurer’s Guild Official Forums, Miami Branch)

SunnyBunz, MightyMouse, ImAPally, DontYouWantMe, AsaAkiraIsBae, BestGirl, LatinHeat, Salty, Backpage, Craig34, l33tpally, Anonymous3, Anonymous4, RedFox, Kimiko, DonnyJuan, Crusader, BadCompany, HurricaneGal, Ambassador, Scholar, Righteous, Id10t, Satyr, DarkEnchanter, RangerMiguel, ScoopGirl, VenusFlyTramp, MagicMike, TsundereHealer, Max, LightningLegacy, SwiftTaylor, Domino, Bacchus, Aegis, Temptation, and Lord_Kickass are in the chat.

ImAPally: So, the military is gearing up to do a full invasion of the broken dungeon in Orlando.

BadCompany: Using that method Scholar mentioned a while back? Raise barriers, cut off the System, and then kill all the monsters inside to ensure that the dungeon stays dead?

ImAPally: Right. They picked Orlando instead of Boca because the former amusement park is more centrally located in the state. Clear out the threat, and a whole lot of options for moving people and goods open up. Which will help for the next operation, clearing up Boca Raton.

Domino: Why just those two, and not some of the other ones, like the Dark Necropolis dungeon?

Temptation: Because the Dark Necropolis is an actual, functioning dungeon, not a broken or rogue dungeon. At least, it has been since I sent people in to smack the dungeon around a bit and keep it from causing problems. The dungeon is not ‘safe’, since no dungeon is actually safe. Even ones like the Prisoner’s Lament dungeon in Germany can be deadly if you don’t play by the rules.

Lord_Kickass: What, you mean the dungeon at that old camp place, where the entire fucking thing is a safe zone? How is it not safe?

Temptation: Because the dungeon has monsters they can release, if needed, who are quite capable of killing anyone in the first couple tiers if they break the rules or otherwise step out of line. Especially since there is a Dungeon Law in effect which slaps all non-dungeon creatures engaging in combat a 99% penalty to all their attributes while in a Safe Zone.

BadCompany: Oof. 99%? That’s basically just an automatic loss, unless you’ve got all your attributes in at least four or five digits, normally.

Max: Why 99%, and not 100%?

Temptation: System interactions and restrictions. The System does not like ‘instant death’ abilities, especially on dungeon laws. Oh, you can have something that hits with instant death levels of damage, or has effects that will kill any reasonable being near-instantly, and that’s fine. Disintegration beam to the head is pretty much as instant death as you can get, but there are still defenses against it, like ‘not getting hit’, some types of spells, and people who have immunities to forceful transmutations of their bodily structure through magic. Very different from an instant death ability with no possible defense.

Max: And dropping someone’s attributes to 0 would kill them?

Temptation: Drop someone’s STR or DEX to 0, and they’d be basically paralyzed. Either too weak to stand, or body frozen in place with no ability to make joints do joint things. Drop INT, WIS, or CHA to 0, and the individual becomes a mindless automaton, a sleeper with endless nightmares, or falls into a catatonic state, respectively. Drop CON to 0, though? Most creatures would then have an HP total of (100 x 0) = 0, and anyone with 0 HP is dead.

Scholar: There are exceptions, of course. Undead appear to use other attributes for their HP, and there are some skills and abilities that allow you to use other attributes to determine your HP, instead of CON, but those are fairly rare, especially in Tier 1 or 2.

BestGirl: So, because the Dark Necropolis is behaving like a proper dungeon, the Military isn’t going to try and wipe it out?

Temptation: Exactly. There is no reason to go around doing something like that. Plus, if they don’t do things properly, you either have a nuke going off, or the dungeon is broken, and then you have to clean it up, like they’ll be doing in Orlando.

Righteous: Just what did you do to that Dark Necropolis dungeon, anyways?

Temptation: I sent some of my followers to rip through the dungeon, and then engaged in some ‘aggressive negotiations’ until the dungeon saw my point of view, and stopped being such a self-important jackass about things. Honestly, going on and on about how ‘nothing can top the power of necromancy’, even though my followers had just absolutely destroyed all his bosses, without any real trouble? Annoying as hell.

RangerMiguel: Moving away from that topic, for now, we’ve gotten reports from the Azure Flames. Apparently, there’s a whole city in the dungeon, now.

BestGirl: What? How?

Craig34: Did the goblins, lizardfolk, and vurlocks expand?

RangerMiguel: No, apparently the city is full of Dogik, and rests in a large cavern underground. From what the Azure Flames have discovered, the Raid is a regular battle royale in the ‘Upper City’ to determine which noble family controls things for the next couple months. However, since everyone involved revives after the battle, the city doesn’t actually get weakened by the constant fighting.

Ambassador: Ugh. I knew that something like this would happen when we made that deal. Back when Ambassador Qeiri and I went to ascertain the status of the Forbidden Chambers of Exotic Pleasures dungeon, we made a deal to bring in condemned criminals to offer up to the dungeon. Sounds like the species types are finally making an appearance.

Temptation: What can I say? I was waiting for a good time to really make an impression with them.

BestGirl: Have the Azure Flames found out how to get access to the raid, yet?

RangerMiguel: Apparently, there is a reputation system. You need to build reputation to get access to the ‘raid floor’ without going through the dungeon each time, and then you need more reputation with one of the factions to earn your way into the raid.

Ambassador: Not the most common approach to raids in dungeons, but not unheard of, either. Still, setting up a whole city, with factions you have to join? That’s ambitious, even for you, Temptation.

Temptation: Fortunately, I have access to a lot of things other people don’t, which allows me to act in ways other people wouldn’t consider. But, yes, there’s a few reputations at play, which will influence how individuals are treated in the city, and what faction they are recruited to for the raid.

SunnyBunz: If these factions are battling over control of the city, does that mean we can make changes to the city, through them?

Temptation: Yes, though each faction has its own goals. Any major changes would require you to help your faction win several consecutive raids, however, or one of their rivals can overturn the new laws before they go into effect. That is one of the ways the city maintains balance, after all.

DonnyJuan: Hey, Temptation, what was that System notice about you having kids with goddesses about?

Temptation: Oh, that’s a fun one. You see,…
