Dev News

Hey all! Since it's been a while since you heard from me, I wanted to let you know how things are going.

Though I'm always working on SEUS, progress with actual results tend come sporadically, and as SEUS PTGI gets more advanced, each update becomes more difficult to achieve.

Though I said I felt ready to move on, I have done quite a bit more work with HRR ("Half Resolution Rendering", check out my last few posts to learn more). I suppose the promise if 2x performance at comparable image quality is truly seductive, yet equally high-maintenance! With a lot of work, I have made some progress, though I still feel a little torn about the feature. What do you guys think about me releasing a new HRR Test version with the improvements?

I've also still been working on the "resource pack based voxelization" and accompanying resource pack conversion tool. I'm in the process of rewriting it as a standalone application (instead of a script in Unity as it was when the project stared). I have opted for a C# WPF application, since that's what I was most comfortable with, and SEUS PTGI only works on Windows anyway. When it's done, I'll create a GitHub repository for it where the source code will be available (in order to fully disclose the functionality of the executable).

I've also identified a problem in the code that is responsible for conservation/distribution of energy for multi-bounce lighting that has been there since the beginning. Fixing the problem, resulted in vastly more accurate indirect lighting, particularly in closed/interior spaces with no additional rendering cost! So that's pretty cool!

I've also been working on 1.16 compatibility. The way that OptiFine renders particles has changed since 1.14. SEUS PTGI relies on the old functionality, so particles still don't render properly, but most other compatibility problems have been fixed.

I've also been toying around with changing the voxel data structure in hopes to allow for greater view distance for ray tracing (both for the maximum length of each ray and for the maximum distance from the player that voxel data exists to be traced through). No concrete progress there yet.

I want to thank all of you who have been so positive, encouraging, and supportive! At times it's easy for me to feel frustrated with my creative process, so your kind words really mean a lot to me!

Why so mean and aggressive? Learn to appreciate hard work :D

Its AMAZING! My only complaint would be the blocklight color and the way it lights up in general...

Marcos David Rubalcava

(SEUS PTGI HRR Test 2.1) The shader is cool, just a shame that the beacon does not light up and sometimes has problems with normal maps, it would also be nice that the leaves please walk around and end_rod does not light up either

Dunkel HD

awesome shader, thankjs

Hello Sonic

Then you didn't read what sonic said because he clearly said that you needed gold rank to unlock SUES PTGI shaders!

Then you didn't read what the different tiers offer before paying, cuz Sonic explicitly states what each tier gives access to.

Hey no need to be an a hole. Sonic has kindly set up his patreon to allow for switching to the ten dollar plan, download ptgi, then switch back to the 1 dollar plan without getting charged extra.

fking idiots, why you not telling us before paying that u need to pay 9$ to acces PTGI, now im going to get it leaked for free mfkers

Rejoined to see if I'd missed anything with regards to HRR updates. Seems no. But ... I'll be back.

how do you download the shader pack??

Nick_ Alonzo

Some people might use Linux so I think AvaloniaUI will be a better framework to use for the conversion tool. Search it out on Google it's using Microsoft's XAML so the move from WPF to that won't be hard :)

yes indeed. though the ptgi doesn't require an RTX card, it can still be a pain in the butt to run on many pc's. I really hope to see an up to date version of renwed, as it runs very well and looks great!

It certainly needs an update, as it's the only semi-universal version that runs well

Waity5

i'm gonna be a tad random here and ask when we can expect to get a new version of renewed. the current one looks great, but is buggy. An example being that the enchantment glint is frozen, and every so often i see a random torch particle effect fly across the sky.

your problem you cant read his about page, literally it says "As of now, SEUS PTGI is in an alpha state, which makes it an Experimental Development release. If you would like to try it out, for now it requires Gold tier access." without an additional 1$ on top of it

xdlolxd

your a dirty bitch gimme my $1 back hoe

it says in the description

why tf did i paid for nothing

Perfect

Lexi Aniston

I didn't know that i had to get gold for the shaders and im mad

There are many shaders that do not need Nvidia to work with NormalMaps or SpecularMaps to reflect, you can add the colored lights, I have seen that my PC lets see the colored lights emitted by the redstone or lapis blocks, the problem is that I do not have Nvidia and everything looks bad, the clouds for example, blurred averages, the water does not differ because it is transparent, and if I put a block that emits light, the ENTIRE MAP starts to emit like a northern lights, when I look the sky the "aurora borealis" is not there but the surface reflects it, could you add that for those of us who do not have Nvidia?

I think that your shaders should not work with Nvidia Graphics, you should make them separately, because above that we spend to get the SEUS PTGI we have to spend for Nvidia.

nice

why do you suck? How's 'bout you go make a path traced shader for minecraft then charge how ever the hell much you want for months and months of work.

Risky Bicky

No scam. Sonics work is unbelievably transformative for minecraft! nothing improves the gameplay and visual quality of Minecraft like this man's work! NOTHING! His titles acronym for this project says it all Sonic Ethers Unbelievable Shaders, as they are truely an unbelievable improvement!!

Bo Pedersen

This is so annoying

I did not know that i'd have to pay an extra 10$ on top of the 1$ for subbing t.t the video link I clicked on, on yt said 1$...

Skitts~Script

Idk about all that.

Yegroid

where are the shaders?

Also, to answer, i think that every test that you think, should be posted, like, cuz you did a big modification, should be posted. Every test is welcome ! like, your first HRR test is very promising ! On my GTX 1060, performances are doubled... With all settings set on ultra/extreme. Really, i even think, honestly, that you (and you alone) are doing an better job with PTGI than an whole enterprise (hi Nvidia ) with actual RTX. So Congrats !

This is like a christmas pressent. No matter what the outcome i feel it's amazing since it comes from a special person ;) Merry Christmas from here!

I Wish you good luck my friend ! You are doing some good work with the HRR test shader. I can't wait to see the E13 version ! 😊👍👌

Yes- You need to subscribe to the $10 tier to get it!

Turnstone

really in love with the PTGI shaders at the moment, however it seems that caves don't have very accurate lighting. In a cave, where I would expect very little light, instead is actually quite bright. Is this a setting I need to change with the shader or something with the shader itself?

Turnstone

Currently running the HRR test beautifully in 1.16.4 in Linux Mint on an RTX 2060, with the only issue being how particles render. I'm disappointed that the Resource Conversion Tool not being made portable to other OSs since the shader is assumed not to be. Please consider releasing the source of the conversion tool. If you do, porting will be done for you. Especially since .NET is available on Linux, and there's also Mono.

i'm new to this whole patreon thing can someone help me out. is it correct in saying you need to be donating $10 or above to get access to download the seus shader pack?

An updated HRR would be amazing, please do

I think an updated HRR would be great to have especially with some improvements mentioned above. Just downloaded the shader today because I got a new GPU and you've done an amazing job with it already I can't wait to see how insane the final product will be.

Yes, release an improved HRR

If it could be updated to 1.16 and get better support for AMD cards then I’d sign back up for the membership

Jonah Rechtenbach

I honestly think a new test version could work. The current PTGI before HRR works fine on 1.16 other than particles from my experience. But your packs are one of few i have seen that does not have many issues with packs like "Better Grass" and the test build of the HRR i definitely do see the performance improvement

TacticalDruid

so how about mod light source compatibility?

Ice2670

Hi, I'm a dev too and I empathize - progress slows down as the project gets more and more complex. I took a break from working and checked out your PTGI builds. They're amazing! About HRR: I understand you want a good performance/accuracy tradeoff. Most people don't care about accuracy though, they were just fine with non-raytracing shaderpacks! If it means getting a good enough framerate, they'll crank the accuracy as far down as it'll go, even if it means the lighting is just totally wrong. I can see the differences between E12 and HRR, but the performance improvement is just much more useful. I have a GTX1070, and the HRR build makes a huge difference. If I get a RTX 3070 PTGI won't get much faster - but Minecraft RTX will, so I'd go play that instead! See the economics here? PTGI is RTX for people on Minecraft Java - and since RTX cores will now compete with shader cores on future GPU designs for die area, this means shader performance on future GPUs will not scale that quickly. Which means performance improvements are more important for end users. Sometimes looking at things from a different, "business side/what else is out there" perspective can be useful. Of course, I'll totally understand if you don't want to spend more time on HRR. Technically it's not the best approach. If you could put a QRR, HRR slider, I guarantee you though, nobody's going to care that quality is worse. EDIT: You know what? it's always best to have a solid implementation first, then worry about performance later.

I think you're doing a great job. I'm more looking forward to features being more compatible across the entire game. Like potions, Nether/The End, rain and other transparent effects etc. Just make sure you're not getting depressed or beating yourself up, and make sure to not care what people on the internet say (I know I'm a person on the internet but it still counts). Take care, you're making peoples experiences better.

I would love HRR to be made a priority. I game in 4k on a 2080 Super and still can't achieve 60 fps with HRR. I get between 30 and 40, which I can play with. I don't mind it. However, on E12, I can only manage 20 in 4k, so it's a great improvement as is. I understand if this is too much for you to do though, but I would love to see it!

Nub The Big Honky

Ok, look. What you've done so far is beyond anything any person could have possibly imagined. However, like you've said. You've started climbing this mountain a long time ago, however instead of you slowly inching forward towards the top. The mountain is simply becoming larger and larger. Not only due to the technical difficulties, such as coding and trying to keep up with Mojangs increasing change release speed, but also due to the community's growing expectations. And I think you've reacjed a point where this entire endeavour has become more than a one man job. Now, yes it's difficult for two people to work on the same thing at once, but you're simply continuously slowing down more and more. Exactly as if you're climbing a mountain that's getting steeper and steeper. But those ar eonly my two cents on the matter.

Limeddäsch

I am so hyped and it sounds like a lot of work, don't stress yourself out with this project as it should be finalized rather than rushed so don't feel like there is pressure on you. Go at your own pace don't worry we won't mind. it's great to have you back!

Danny Mountjoy

new here but down to see anything. i an overly excited to check these all out.

White_Kanye

It is nice to have you back!

Would love to see an updated HRR version.

Keep doing what you wanna do! I love PTGI so far and I'm hyped to see what else you have in store!

Please release new HRR @.@

John Turner

Turns out I started supporting at just the right time! A feature that I would really like to see come over from Renewed is the torch falloff distance slider but other than that, once 1.16 is fully supported I'm gonna be using this shader a lot more!

Please brother, release HRR beta 2 when your good and ready! I've been one of your Patreons for a couple years now, and every drop of yours is usually WEEKS of new detail to explore, and features to exploited in some of my fav worlds! That is if course, if I'm not tinkering with the latest cinematic resources from USMOEA, & seeing how your latest release affects them! So far, your efforts with HRR have made USMOEAS extreme resource packs(GOD I love what he did/does with redstone!!) move into brand new territory!! PLAYABLE FPS!! yeah, that's not a typo. Straight facts! Something he's clearly stated from the get go was never the purpose for, nor would he ever try to, make the packs with gameplay in mind. Sonic, I, and any other of your Patreons who have been here a year or more I'm certain are happy with your release schedule. And I'll me.first in line for HRR beta 2, whenever your ready brother!

Bo Pedersen

do you plan on releasing the 1.16 compatibility before you release everything else?

Frank Simmons

Love your work. How do you feel about POM support for the shader? Is it even doable for HRR cause the performance is crazy good on the first release. And hopefully you will smooth out the kinks down the road. I’m also producing a 512px and 1024px texture pack with substance designer and HRR is good but I kinda depend on Pom to get the proper look

POST POST POST

Yegroid

New demo for sure! Particles and light from mobs on fire would be nice for 1.16. I only play MC because of your shader!

Derek Gebhart

AWESOME! I'm so glad you've made some more progress. Honestly your work is incredible and I'm happy to hear that you've made a break through after having a bit of trouble last time. You got this man. And hell yea I wanna see the new demo.

david newman

I would love to see a new HRR test version with the improvements!

I personally would LOVE to see the progress on HRR even if it’s far from perfect, and you end up abandoning it later! Those other tweaks and fixes sound fantastic too

Whatever it is, do not get upset and try to go further. As it can be seen, a lot of work has already been done! Keep it up!

VitAnyaNaked

I decided to subscribed when I saw Muta's(SomeOrdinaryGamers) video about him using this with VR. I can't seem to get it to work though. If I have Stencil turned on. The option that doesn't render the world outside the lenses - the world looks very jank and i have some weird gray thing covering the left side of my face. With the stencil off. It seems to some-what work. but my FPS is unplayable. I am using a i9-9900k and GTX1080TI with the Valve Index. I assume this might be a ViveCraft issue on Index.

the HHR feature sounds great but I wonder if the effort will be worth it in the long run? won't it soon be redundant with NVidia's DLSS 3.0 (which will work with any game that supports TAA)? AMD is reported to be working on similar upscaling tech to compete with DLSS as well. (not trying to be negative - love your work)

hey, good to hear from you <3 You also got mentioned positively by UpIsNotJump latest Video about minecraft :3 https://youtu.be/IbRgmcdo0ro?t=758

PTGI works well on Linux. I hope we will be able to use the conversion tool in Linux, at least in WINE. Of course, we can always use a VM if that doesn't work.

It works on all platforms that support discrete graphic cards

I don’t think anyone would say no to a new and improved version of HRR! Go for it!

Ryan

HRR is awesome! I can use the shader with upwards of 70fps! there are some issues but it's overall amazing. I have never not been mind blown by how great mc looks with your shaders, keep up the great work :)

KCGD

I'm currently using the HRR version and love it! It's not perfect, sure, but honestly the ability to play casually with these shaders heavily outweighs any minor issues I have. I'd personally love an updated HRR version! Thank you for your great work, its turned an already beautiful game into a breathtaking one.

If you make another HRR type thing. Will it be AMD Compatible? I have a RX580 and I would like to see better performance.

Duck

At the end of the day, we are supporting you on working on your project, so you do what you feel comfortable doing and releasing to us. While I would love full 1.16 compatibility, last thing I would want is the project to suffer because the passion gets lost.

Jimmy Jones

SEUS PTGI works on Linux also, I use in in Ubuntu

Does it only work with windows? I am running this on linux

Great!

im noT Betta Core

i just bought gold tier excess thinking i could use it on 1.16 :/

Honestly anything that gives me 1.16 support would be a big bonus in my books.

SnowTheBard

Really love what you do man, keep on going, also please release the beta as its alway good to ask the community, maybe theres new bugs, also please deal with those free download sites have a nice day sonic :D

CielMC

Thanks for the news! Really appreciate the info — and, of course, all the hard work you've put into this.

Lucid Flight

Since I really love the HRR Version it would be awesome to play this version with the improvements

Pinku

I actually haven't went back to E12 since HRR released, the gain in fps and not having old lighting enabled is too good.

patrix

Of course, we'd love to try another HRR Test update! Great to see you're making more progress and really looking forward to the app!

Ultimate Immersion

same

patrix

I'd say yes to a new HRR test ! Great job, hope you'll feel better.
