Update #82 Manuscript debt
Added 2025-01-18 21:23:47 +0000 UTCOh, hello there. It's just me, remembering the day for once.
I think I'm through the toughest part of writing the script. Which is coming up with one in the first place, as well as writing the first version of every scene. Now it's just refinement, which is a fancy way of saying that I'm going to rewrite every scene. That usually doesn't take much time, it's always easier to fiddle with something that exists, compared to creating it in the first place.
Probably going to look at doing a few polls soon. Maybe in the coming week, maybe later. As I mentioned at some point earlier, at least I think I've mentioned it, it'll be about picking out some casual clothing for Grishla and Zavnessos. Saranhil will be demanding something cute, but even she will have to bow to the powers of democracy.
So yeah, putting together some outfits and rewriting scenes is what the coming week will look like for me.
Ideally I finish writing the scenes altogether, so I can start rendering. And ideally my efforts in structuring stuff will lead to being able to cobble together a script a bit quicker in the future. Man, the first few episodes were so easy to write, back then I didn't have to keep anything at all in mind. Now I have to try and remember all the stupid stuff I wrote a year ago. I suppose I should try to remember the good stuff too.
It's kind of like tech debt. Manuscript debt? You don't get this if you write the entire story in one go. Then again, I would've assuredly lost interest and motivation if I did so. Actually releasing stuff and getting responses and feedback from you guys is super motivating.
Come to think of it, is GRRM suffering from manuscript debt? Imagine writing seven whole books in one go to avoid it. Actually, didn't JK Rowling do exactly that? Is she actually smart? I mean, beyond the bigotry and what not.
To be fair, if she was that smart she would just be enjoying her wealth and not try to swim in the cesspool of twitter. That could be said of some other people as well.
Well, that's about all I had to say. Again, there may or may not be polls in the week.
Thank you very much for your support, and I wish you a week free of twittering cesspools.

Indeed, I often hear about good actors improvising some of the best lines.

My descriptions are also pretty good when I put in the effort, but I tend to be kinda ass at inner thoughts and character actions. Too used to conveying those through rendering facial expressions, and body language. But yeah, dialogue is really difficult, there's always so much more to improve on. I think it's because, in most prose you are trying to get your own voice through, but in dialogue you have to speak with someone else's voice. It puts a lot of weight into having a clear idea of the who character you're writing is, what they care about, how they should be expressing themselves, and so on. I bet actors are great at that shit.

2025-01-19 07:52:04 +0000 UTCOh yeah I guess there is a very small amount of flavor text/third person narration in most VNs (more narration in sandbox) ((I'm pretty sure I've heard dialogue is the most difficult to do well?) based on shows I have seen it is an easy conclusion to draw, whether that is entirely accurate or not I don't know.)

2025-01-19 01:10:03 +0000 UTCI looked it up, and I'm definitely wrong about that one, but I seem to recall hearing that she had several written before first being published. Since the first four were released in a span of four years, followed by a three year span for the next, that does seem likely. But yeah, I imagine there's a lot of parts to keep track of once you get that deep into a story. I also have no concept of how long a VN is compared to a novel. I do know that I spend far more time making renders than writing, and the writing is almost pure dialogue, so it is a bit tough to compare.

2025-01-18 23:20:14 +0000 UTCNever knew she wrote them all in one go, what does that even mean for a series of that length? (Also I have almost no concept of how long VNs are compared to books) Surely she still had to do some things to organize previous aspects of the story and character states/details in order to write properly in later parts?
