WELL... one of the 2 babies were conceived in that R session... we don't know any details about the swap, if any.

This also means that Jinshi was conceived during that revenge session Anshi did to the late emperor.

This show does an amazing job at correcting the viewer's wrong impressions of people. The late emperor was constantly portrayed as this horrible, disgusting person. But in reality he was the victim. It started with him getting abused at a young age by women trying to conceive children with him, resulting in him growing incredibly scared of adult women. Then, when he got older, he was seduced by 'a girl full of ambition' sent by her father to become his wife. When she grew up and he got scared of her she tormented him night after night (we all know what she did to him...) until eventually the last fragments of his mind broke and he slowly disappeared into nothingness. History repeated itself and he had nowhere to run and couldn't even feel safe at night. It's freaking tragic. If anyone's the villain it's the empress dowager (Anshi), although one could argue she was being used as a tool by her father at a young age as well. I am a little bit disappointed that Flexie didn't really understand most of this, but I do understand because it can be a bit hard to uncover the truth watching this show sometimes.

Funnily enough I get the exact opposite impression of Lady Anshi's/ the empress dowagers remark at the end there. I didn't see it as her threatening him in any way but as her, in her position as his mother that has loved and cared for him for 20 years, waring him that he is too obvious about his favorite. That if other people find out they might target Maomao to get at him.

Not sure if this has been said yet but I believe the author confirmed that the reason why the late emperor had such a preference for little girls is because he was made emperor as a child after all his older brothers died, and an emperor’s number one duty is to produce as many heirs as fast as possible. Basically, he was severely sexually abused and traumatized by older and mature court ladies as a child in order to start trying to produce heirs, and it horrendously backfired in that he developed a phobia for adult women (why he freaked out when Anshi’s older sister touched him) and only saw safety in young girls (Anshi approaching him and asking if he was okay). It’s absolutely not an excuse for the horrible things he did to so many children, but it is an explanation and an example as to how abuse, specifically sexual abuse in this case, can lead to generational trauma and further pain. I remember reading this scene for the first time and just feeling downright awful and horrified (which shows how amazing the writing of Apothecary Diaries is to not only depict such dark subjects but to also show how abuse affects those involved, both as victims and perpetrators, and how despite it all there is kindness and beauty in the world- Jinshi looking so much like the late emperor should and most likely does pain Anshi, yet she still loves him dearly despite everything she went through and subsequently did).

Foreshadow, this show is great at dropping small hints and let the viewers piece the puzzle together in a fun way. I don't get frustrated with this show because every episode gives me enough answers to satisfy my desire to understand the mystery.

Here's some medical, historical, and I guess cultural background to make things more clear without spoilers: Gynophobia is a condition that makes you irrationally afraid of women. It can be towards women of all ages, but most often it's only towards physiologically developed women (which is often the underlying cause of paedophilic tendencies). Sigmund Freud proposed that this fear is the result of the fear of castration (as in: young boy sees his mother naked, sees her private parts are "missing something", becomes subconsciously afraid of "becoming female", cue vagina dentata and all of that. Too much for a simple comment but that's the gist) but this view is widely contested, and for a good reason - biological women can suffer from gynophobia too. Nowadays it's widely understood to be the result of sexual trauma. With that in mind, you have an emperor who is the last of his line because most of his family died to a plague. He is the last guy standing, and the only person close to him that can protect him is his mother. We don't know what happened between them, but what we do know is that no one is born gynophobic. Now, him being the last of his line, he HAS TO produce an heir. That is his whole purpose in life and the whole reason the emperors have the "garden of women". But he's deathly afraid of women. So what does the court decide (probably under the direction of his mother)? I mean, at this point you can fill in the blanks. It's just a f***ed up situation that spiralled completely out of control hurting countless people in the process. But, how much can we blame on the people themselves, and how much is the fault of the times they lived in? I love how this show gives you the tea, but doesn't tell you how to sip it.

Yeah, this was a tough episode to watch. The first time I saw it I had to take a break from The Apothecary Diaries for a few weeks.
