Anime Shading Plus: An Anime Shader

Hello everyone!

Today, I'd like to talk about a shader I found on Unity's Asset Store. It's a shader asset called "Anime Shading Plus."

What caught my attention was its "Screen Space Outline" feature. When creating real-time outlines, methods that use the model's mesh are commonly employed. Screen Space Outline, however, is a technique that creates outlines based on the screen using PostProcessing.

When you actually use it, you can see that it's able to draw lines that couldn't be expressed with Mesh Outline.

While outline expressions using PostProcessing have existed before, I've never seen one this clean. Of course, it requires more processing power compared to Mesh Outline, but the results are really impressive.

You can also use VertexColor to finely control which parts shouldn't have outlines.

Additionally, it lets you create SDF Textures to control facial shadows and has features to smooth out the normals of Mesh Outlines.

The settings have some unique controls, but they become easy to configure once you get used to them. For more details, I recommend referring to the documentation provided by the developer.

If you're interested in outlines for anime-style 3D models, I think it's worth giving a try.
