SPOILED, part 9 - Sketches

I went through a few iterations for both of these illustrations. I initially had some sort of 'outside looking in through the window' idea for Manni and Fenton, but it just wasn't working, neither was Fenton's profile pose - it just didn't feel like it lined up properly, and when I re-read the chapter, neither did his state of undress, so I totally re-drew that to more accurately reflect the text. I do take artistic license on these things at times, but this was a bit of a stretch,
Then I completely redid Terry's shading too, which is something I rarely do after completing the final piece, but when I came back to it after a day or so, I didn't like it. The aim was to have him looking shiny like a balloon, but the finished product just looked odd, like disco lights on him or something, so I went back to something a bit more traditional and that worked better.

Sometimes it's hard to throw away work when you put a fair chunk of time into it, but I always try to ask myself 'Is this good enough?' and if I'm not satisfied, it has to change.

2022-05-18 20:01:38 +0000 UTCThis is part of the art process I enjoy seeing the most. The piece doesn’t work…erase your art and start again until it feels right! Erasing your art is valid! Man Manni is really growing that food gut. Hmm maybe taking a thick page out of Arthur’s cook book? XD. I am loving the “innocent” cuddling and the relatar is developing. I do hope that Arthur gets to squeezes Manni as he slumbers and vice versa.

2022-05-18 19:20:59 +0000 UTCThank you Carl. It was a hard choice to take away Fenton's exposed hairy belly, but it just didn't make much sense with the story. I write and finish my stories usually quite far ahead of time before I illustrate them, and sometimes I plow straight ahead with a drawing without thoroughly checking what I wrote first, and this was an example of that!

For what it's worth, I think you're absolutely right in both of your final decisions; the Fenton angle gives the image more depth, and the stronger lighting on Terry is better than "Disco Terry". Gorgeous art as always, Lokitu! <3
