An Officer and a Gentleman

First up from the Poll winners is An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

************Light Spoilers Below*******************

What an introduction to a character! I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in a movie—you learn so much about Z. Mayo so quickly. What a way to grow up. Yikes. After sleeping on this movie and thinking about it more, I still feel the same way I mentioned in the outro, though I'm unsure where to place it among the romantic dramas I've seen. I don’t think its a top favourite for me, but i appreciate a lot about this movie. There were many special moments in this film, with great acting all around, but especially from Debra Winger and Louis Gossett, Jr. I haven't seen much else from him (or her), but these two blew me away. I also loved the visual style of this film, with its subtle but beautiful cinematography. The excellent storytelling gave us plenty of time to spend with these characters. There were some deeply vulnerable scenes and wonderfully developed relationships. While devastated by the tragedy, the movie left me with an uplifting feeling, which was lovely. I absolutely loved the ending—it was so romantic!

I watched this reaction a second time. One of my favorites of your reactions.

It was great seeing An Officer and a Gentleman again with you, Ames! I enjoyed your reaction and insights. Definitely not your typical romantic drama but a good story and great acting, especially by Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and Louis Gossett Jr. (Plus, you gotta love the 80's hair throughout!) ***** SPOILERS BELOW ***** I love the chemistry betweed Gere and Winger, but my favorite moment in the film is during the final obstacle-course run, when Mayo abandons his attempt to break the course record and coaches Seeger over the wall. So satisfying and such an important moment in Mayo's character arc! Interestingly, R. Lee Ermey, the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket was hired as the film's technical advisor to coach Louis Gossett Jr. for the role of Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley. So that's how the "steers and queers" comment from Gossett's character in the movie came to be used by Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, five years later.
