So glad to hear all the people who love this band and movie!

Baron!!!!! Loved this reaction and, like you, it was so much fun to revisit, it's been a long, long time since I watched it! I was ALSO an acting major in college when I saw this, when I was 18; I saw it with this 27 year old grad student I was having a fling with! Ha! A costume designer, so the two of us were cracking up during the fashion design scene. A great memory! Love that gal wherever she is! Ended up working for Scorsese on "Age Of Innocence". Anyways, LOVE Talking Heads, love this movie......and love this channel!!! Where else was I ever going to see a reaction to this crazy movie?!

Tic Toc Melody

Totally agree, ultimately there's nothing to get, it's just surreal and trippy, a narrative movie from an abstract artist/rock musician. And totally 80s in the best way! I think Brazil, I think Lynch's Blue Velvet, Scorsese's After Hours, Repo Man, the first two Coen Brothers movies......even The Thin Blue Line! But more cuddly and shaggy dog than those movies, less cynical. So happy you liked it!!!!! I thought Ames' commentary was fun and spot-on......even if it was hard work to get through!

That's really cool you saw it with a Byrne Q&A! I would have killed to be at that! I actually met David Byrne at a bar at the Beacon Theatre once, and then again backstage, just a couple of years after this movie, he was really cool. Didn't get to talk "True Stories" though!

I’m a Talking Heads fan and True Stories is a fun quirky movie but Stop Making Sense is literally one of the greatest things that man has ever created. It’s up there with fire, the automobile, and those toilets that shoot water up your butt!

Queen Of Farts

This is one my wife and I were looking forward to, and it was nice to revisit after a lot of years, so thank you for the reaction and thank you for pronouncing my name correctly! Most people screw it up. On the movie… I was an acting major in college when this came out. The band was already big among the eclectic crowd I ran with, so the soundtrack quickly became a go-to for dancing at after-show parties (even theater techies can dance to this stuff), and the movie became quite popular in the department. It’s a good example of the rise of random satire as humor in the 1980s. Random pop culture references (Billy Idol, Meatloaf, Prince), the lady with all the random crazy stories, and the random mocking of what passed as normal in those years (the ‘shopping is feeling,’ suburban development, and church scenes). A lot of the early Saturday Night Live and David Letterman stuff was along those lines. Side note: I’ve been one of those guys standing in the mall laughing at the conspiracy and gossip magazines. On the music…The Talking Heads were already known, along with the other bands that came out of the mid-1970s New York scene, especially the ones who were playing at a club called CBGB. Blondie, the Ramones, Madonna, and Elvis Costello all also played there, Springsteen and Patti Smith debuted “Because the Night” together there in 1977, the Police started their first U.S. tour there, and that building is now on the National Registry of Historic Places. Alan Rickman was in a pretty good movie about the club. Again, thanks!

I had no exposure to Talking Heads before but I liked it!

Great pick Baron! I really enjoyed this. Obviously great music (and wow John Goodman can sing, impressive falsetto!), fantastic direction and editing (props to David Byrne), and amazing colors and shots. I understand your brain being fried, Ames, but I think there isn't anything to "get"! 😂 It's like a waking dream. Reminded me of many things: David Lynch, Northern Exposure, Gummo, and Sesame Street but more than anything the silent film Un Chien Andalou. (Would love to see a reaction to that one sometime, it's only about 20 min!) Surrealism isn't really my thing, but watching films like this occasionally reignites my enthusiasm for cinema! 👍👍

JM63

Right on, man!!! Favorite album? (mine are Fear Of Music and Talking Heads '77)

Toc

Congrats to Baron! Never have seen a reaction to this and always wanted to! (And thanks to Ames!)

Toc

lol I was definitely hoping it would stop at Man on Fire, that’s definitely one of my favorites!

Christian R

Big Talking Heads fan here.

Kudo's to Baron for choosing a unique and offbeat film like TRUE STORIES. Love these and we need more of them. I actually saw this at a Chicago Film Festival (Bryne was there and did a audience Q&A afterward) and I wasn't really impressed with it. Wasn't bad and wasn't great. Big Bryne fan though and a true creative genius but I think most people left the screening preferring his music to his filmmaking prowess..

RFK Fan

Wow!!!! I think you have to be a Talking Heads fan to get into it and knowing David Byrne's sensibility so I can't imagine going in blind to it, but I have to say I've been dying to see a reaction to this movie so......I'm psyched! Love this movie!!!! Have a great memory of watching this with this girl i knew. The fashion show! Ha! Can't wait to see that scene! Like I said, can't imagine a non-fan watching this movie, but hopefully you'll enjoy some of the off-beat stuff in it. Love John Goodman in it! One of my favorite John Goodman roles!

Toc

Ughh! Such boll-locks! I hope u land soon!

Stop Making Sense is so good. Highly recommend

David K

Huh... just looked this up on IMDB. Not sure I'll watch this one, but I found it notable it's directed by David Byrne, best known for his time as the singer for "The Talking Heads". So I guess I'll use this opportunity to recommend seeing the band's classic concert film "Stop Making Sense", if you haven't already. One of the all time great concert films.

Carl Lyngholm

Gah! That was one click away from my pick :(
