Prompt #18

Typically, community gardens weren’t for witches. But no one dare approach Midge about her sprouting patch of"

I'm futzing with it a bit - here's mine.

Typically, community gardens weren’t for witches, but Midge wasn't growing anything unusual. Her vegetables, flowers, and fruits were all coming in at the same size, pace, and color of everyone else's. It was the "help" that came with her that was turning into an issue...

Most people don't use living garden gnomes but a lot of witches do. When it all began, they stayed within the confines of Midge's allocated lot, but the longer they stayed, the more comfortable they felt exploring.

Danthul was easily the most useful. He would go around eating anything that was overripe and past its prime. The green beans he devoured were usually taller than him, but he was a thicc boi and had a seemingly bottomless stomach. If he wasn't munching on oversized spoils, Danthul was usually found sleeping on the flat rock in the southeast corner of Midge's lot.

Ruby and Toobs were always kanoodling. It never went past kissing and some wandering hands, but they seemed to be immune to the stares of other gardeners. No matter how much you coughed or how loud you walked, they would just keep necking [usually under the hierlooms]

Berfa hated clothes and she was always naked. She was constantly dancing to a tune in her own head. She was an excellent twerker.

Pambo sat in his little rocker next to the cucumbers with a nerf pistol, ready to scare away any pests and protect the crops. Unfortunately, Pambo could never hold their booze and was usually snoring next to a half-empty flask while bunnies nibbles Midge's greens.

And, of course, there was Obie. Obie knew every off-color joke in the book and had a voice that could really project. Obie also claimed to know card tricks but could never really pull them off.

There's been talk of establishing a strict "Gno Gnome" policy next season, but no one in their right mind wanted to be the one to have to tell a witch to change her ways. At the end of the season, the other gardeners had decided it was rather nice that they didn't need to clear their own neglected veggies. And hey - Pambo got about 1 of every 3 bunnies who came to munch, and that was starting to add up.

[and Berfa really could twerk]

Short but sweet. 18. Typically community gardens weren’t for witches. But no one dare approach Midge about her sprouting patch of seaweed in the middle of the allotment. Not even a hydroponic tub, it was a fully charmed pool of salt water, suspended above the soil, supporting a thriving bed of kelp. Midge's apartment was a mid-century fixer-upper with a single stall shower and Chowder, her otter familiar, needed a roomy place to frolic. His amplification magic was patchy without total immersion and there were no available salt water bodies in the bustling hamlet of Urbana, Illinois. [The benefits at the university were expansive and Midge had always loved teaching chemistry and physics to bright, eager young minds. Magic was merely enhanced science, after all.]

Berfa and I are the same gent, I fear. 🤭 Now every time I throw ass, I think of my girl Berfa. 😂

I'll buy some! Give me the full range, please. 😍

Typically community gardens weren’t for witches, but no one dare approach Midge about her sprouting patch of dreamberries. But really, at first, no one suspected that the small, bushy shrubs were magical in nature. They appeared to be ordinary blueberry plants, but as the clusters of pale, unripe berries matured, they failed to deepen into the deep, purply-blue hue that Midge’s fellow gardeners anticipated. Instead, plump, iridescent berries hung heavy on the plants, tempting curious fingers to pluck the fruits. But here the curious nature of dreamberries is revealed. When dreamberries are picked, their color changes based on the type of dream last experienced by the picker. Experiencing nightmares? The berries turn an inky black with a hint of dark red. Plagued by stress dreams? You’ll end up with muted gray berries with streaks of deep blue. Still riled up from that rudely interrupted wet dream? You will soon be holding a deep, velvety crimson fruit. Daydreaming while you pluck a dreamberry? The iridescent berry will brighten into a radiant yellow. Simply experiencing every day, mundane dreams? The dreamberry will flatten out into an off-white. Midge, a slightly forgetful witch, neglected to mention to her fellow gardeners the dangers of consuming raw dreamberries; but to be fair, one should always be wary of consuming such obviously enchanted fruit. But after Midge noticed her neighbors experiencing overwhelming mood swings, nausea, tension headaches, and inappropriate levels of arousal (among other effects), a sign appeared next to the dreamberry patch. WARNING: Eating raw dreamberries will result in overwhelming emotional surges, (mostly) unwanted physical side effects, and psychological disturbances. DO NOT eat raw dreamberries unless you want to: believe you can fly (trust me, you can’t); experience the worst rollercoaster of emotions (ever); have a heartfelt conversation with your furniture; see colors that don’t exist. (This is not a complete list of side effects-I don’t have the time or patience to list them all here; please just don’t eat the dreamberries.) Several weeks later, after Midge had collected enough dreamberries, a variety of jams began to appear at the local farmers’ market. By distilling the effects of the dreamberries into preserves, she was able to balance the effects of the dreamberries and control their potency. Jam from nightmare berries (dark, bitter, tangy) is a powerful detoxifier, helping to cleanse the body and psyche from negative energies. Stress berry jam (sharp, sour, puckering) helps reduce tension and anxiety, promoting relaxation and peace of mind. Sex dream berries yield a jam (intoxicatingly sweet, luscious, rich) heightens your senses and promotes a deep sense of relaxation and intimacy. Daydream berry jam (vibrant, light, fresh) brings a burst of joy and creativity, enhancing imaginative thinking. Jam from the normal dream berries (mild, subtle, easily forgotten but pleasant while it lasts) promotes feelings of overall well-being and encourages a peaceful state of mind. Midge’s neighbors have a healthy respect for the raw dreamberries, although she sometimes still has to treat the foolishly curious for bouts of uncontrollable laughter and babbling nonsense, but her artisanal dreamberry jams have gained quite the following.

So in our house, we don't have an elf on the shelf. We have a gnome in the home (except they keep multiplying and appear for every holiday and we have four at Christmas, so it is a bit of an overpopulation situation.) They don't cause mischief or make messes like those pesky elves, but they do move around at night, so they keep the kiddos on their toes. I appreciate the antics of your gnomefolk. I hope ours don't get any ideas...

Megan (mlgreads)

Now keep in mind this just came to me. It's a little disjointed but I like it

Typically community gardens weren’t for witches. But no one dare approach Midge about her sprouting patch of wolfsbane, deadly night shade or other such plants. Everyone knew that if you had a problem with something supernatural you went to Midge. Werewolves, Vampires, Ghost, Ghouls, or anything else Midge had something she concocted that would help. Her garlic was the best at repelling Vampires. Her wolfsbane tea would surely get rid of the pesky werewolf. Midge took great care in her plants. Showing them the love and attention they deserved in order to allow them to thrive. Now what no one new is that Midge would also go around and sprinkle the other members' plots with her special soil, the one that she had enchanted to repel pests and to help plants thrive and grow. In do so the fruits and vegetables that grew in the garden were some of the best in town. Always fetching the best price at the farmers market, because they looked absolutely perfect. Now midge had her own little booth at the Farmers Market. Teas, Potions, Herbs and trinkets was what Midge sold the best of. But without fail the other members of the community gardner would shower Midge with praises and gifts every week. Because once Midge moved into the community garden that was when things started changing for the better for everyone. No one questioned Midges methods. No one questioned why sometimes she was out tending to the plants late at night. Everyone just knew that When Midge moved into Town and offered her help then all problems they had been having started to go away. Midge had a solution for almost anything that was presented to her.

“Look, *I’m* not going to be the one to say anything.” “I mean, *somebody* has to! They’re *poisonous*!” “Yeah, but they have good properties too! You know that like 67% of this community had insomnia, and now we’re all sleeping like babies! Plus, speaking of babies, you’ve noticed the distinct uptick in pregnancies since Midge came along… guess how many of those women went to her for an amulet? ALL OF THEM.” “OK, but… POISON.” “Fair! But also, you’ll note the downturn in depression.” “Also true, but the hallucinations are a pretty steep price to pay.” “Listen, that’s your own fault for taking too much. Midge told you the exact quantities and method for use and you didn’t listen.” “You’re right, that’s on me. Still, though… POISON. We can’t guarantee anybody won’t take too much, or decide to steal some and make use of it if Flynn down the hardware store starts getting mouthy again. And you know Peggy’s been gunning for her husband since she found that lipstick mark on his collar. And who can blame her! Jolene “missed” his cheek? Come on. Plus, the *screaming* when you pull them up… my god, the *screaming*. I mean the legends are exaggerated, it won’t *actually* kill you, but it’ll sure make you wish you were dead.” “On the up side, no one can come in and steal any, it’ll wake up anybody in a three-block radius.” “You’re not wrong.” “OK look, we *have* to talk to her about it. I know she’s a bit of a curmudgeon, but she’s not all bad! Look how many people she’s helped with all of her herbal concoctions! Old wives' tales or not, people are having positive results!” “She is kind! She is a *kind* person. But she’s not a *nice* person.” “Well maybe that’s because nobody ever talks to her unless they want something!” “Well maybe *that’s* because she yells at you if you look at her cross-eyed!” "Then don’t look at her cross-eyed! Problem solved!” "*sigh* We’re clearly not gonna come up with a solution to this today. Let’s table it ‘til the next meeting, and we can brainstorm non-confrontational ways to approach her. And we'll roll the dice to see who gets the honor." Typically, community gardens weren’t for witches. But no one dared approach Midge about her sprouting patch of mandrake.

Typically community gardens weren’t for witches. But no one dare approach midge about her sprouting patch of mystical herbs that seemed to shimmer and in the moonlight one can hear whispers of ancient magic. It’s rumored that Midge used these herbs for magic that would heal and protect. Noticed Bruno? Went to visit Midge and not too long after became mayor? Or how Trisha’s partner, Becca denied having an affair? Becca swears she hasn’t been able to tell a lie since she admitted to it after drinking the tea Trisha made her. I visited Midge. I asked her to make my face look like it did when I was 21, my breasts to go down one or two cup sizes (my back, ouch!) and for my long, lean (now thick) cellulite (ugh) free legs. She brewed a tea and I had to drink it in front of the fire while she chanted. I couldn’t make out what she was saying but this was the herb she used: Starlight Mintroot - * Healing and renewal: this root is used in spells to aid physical recovery and emotional healing * Grounding energy: Brewed into a tea, this root is thought to provide grounding energy, helping witches feel stable and secure during times of change * Fire element ritual: witches incorporate this root into fire ceremonies of transformation to symbolize the burning away of old patterns and/or negative thoughts Three days later, still no changes and I was disappointed. That night, Blu called and asked me to go out to Whiskey & Whistle-hodown. I threw on my favorite black dress that hugged my curves just right, applied my make up to accentuate my eyes, let my curly hair down and away I went. We had such an incredible night. We danced, laughed and sang along to our favorite songs. The warm connection allowed me to forget my insecurities. A man approached us with the most charming smile and asked, “Mind if I join you?” As we danced, the background seemed to fade away. Our bodies responded to the music, to each other, like being guided by an invisible string of connection. We locked eyes, an unspoken conversation in a language only we understood. Next thing I knew we were deep in conversation. Like me, he wasn’t one for small talk. For the first time in a long time, I was really enjoying myself. Not because of how I looked, but because of how I felt– confident, vibrant, and happy. I haven’t stopped smiling. I went to visit Midge to thank her for letting me see myself and fall in love with me. Midge responded: the magic lies within you. Embrace who you are. The most powerful transformation are the ones that happen within. I’m glowing brighter than any mystical garden or stars in the sky.
