Sicario

Comments

Pretty much back in the 1970s the Medellin Cartel controlled the drug world and the CIA helped the Medellin Cartel move drugs undetected without us Americans knowing about it. The CIA would helped the Medellin Cartel from Colombia as long as they followed their rules and give them a percentage of money from the drugs. But then other Cartels in Mexico become big enough to rival the Medellin Cartel. And the Mexicans didn’t want to work with CIA and give them a percentage of their earnings which is where Alejandro come in to picture. Alejandro was a lawyer in Colombia and his clients were the Medellin Cartel which he protected from going to jail. So the Mexican Cartel sent people to kill top members that worked for the Medellin Cartel to bring down the organize crime. So know the CIA uses Alejandro to kill off Mexican cartel leaders so that their cartels fall and the Colombians get back all their power since they actually work for the CIA and they follow the rules. And yes Ellie Mexico is like this still till this day some places are worse than others I know first hand. I was born and raised in South Texas. My Grandparents and parents are Mexicans. And I live about 15 minutes away from the closest Mexican border. When we go to visit family in Mexico I get a little nervous because they know when you’re not Mexican even though I look like them and speak Spanish with a Mexican because of my parents they just know I’m American. I some people from school that have gone missing.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

The Homies

We don't know what they did for sure, it was left open for interpretation.

Evyatar Hadar

Yeah Man on Fire is awesome and no one on Youtube talks about it.

Reed Elam

The Homies

Last mexican update, about mexican movies (3) Other people here have recommended great movies, but commonly all these recommendations are Hollywood movies portraying Mexico-USA. I always recommend these 2 mexican-produced movies as I think offer a good insight to our type of humor. * Matando Cabos https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380538/ -- a comedy and great portrayal of mexican humor, freindship and stupidity haha. * El Infierno https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1692190/ -- comedy/parody but with veery dark humor, this shows the life of drug dealers in villages and how they recruit, and the mess they made out of everything. Also the sense of family and community in these towns, but also the coldness of drug dealers if they are betrayed. // There are many more famous mexican movies like "Amores Perros", but those in my opinion do not show mexican culture as the ones I recommended. They are famous because of the production and direction, and over-dramatic stories haha

Mexican update continues, about drugs and violence (2) As other have pointed out, violence reached it's peak between 2009-2012 because the president decided to be more aggressive towards drug-dealers using military. Drug-dealers showed extreme violence in response and scenes from the movie did happen (corpses on bridges), sadly. This happened mostly in the border area. Having said that, you could say it happened mainly on small towns or villages, not places a tourist would go, or an "average" mexican, unless you have family there. Having said that, many of these drug-dealers grew up on this villages and improve them with their money (build schools, hospitals, etc), so they are loved in their communities. These also caused confrontations between militia and civilians in these areas =S Buuut, although we still have many violent incidents relative to other countries, it's not as bad as it was at that time. However, politicians are drug-dealers' bitches haha

Ok as a Mexican I feel obliged to give some info LOL First about weather and territory (1) Mexico is a very very LARGE country (top 15), 23 european countries fit on it! https://i.imgur.com/6yopOcT.jpg --> Hence, we have almost all kinds of weather depending on the area. The north part (border with US) is mostly like a desert and where all stereotypes come from haha. But we have jungles (Lacandon Jungle), beautiful beaches (famous for American during spring break, like Playa del Carmen), and really chill weather area like Mexico city (ranges between 3 and 25 degrees all year). So, most certainly you can a find a destination that suits your interests =)

Ellie in Spanish means “ Chica Bonita. “

‘ End of watch, ‘is a great watch as well . It’s about 2 LA street cops. Emily is married to Jon Krasinski who stared in the American version of ‘The Office ‘as Jim.

You guys picked an INCREDIBLY ACCURATE movie that shows *just a small part* of America’s (absolutely pointless) “war on drugs.” Sicario expertly captures the corruption that exists on both sides of the border, from the US agencies to corrupt Mexican officials and the cartels, this is one of the most complicated issues for both countries right now. The last ~40 years of U.S. intervention in foreign drug operations, especially in Mexico & Latin America, have basically helped to perpetuate the problem of drug cartels even further. No one has an answer or a solution to this ongoing “war on drugs,” which is why it’s largely overlooked by our leaders and isn’t given the sort of media attention it deserves. The sad part is that so many people who watch this movie walked away assuming it’s all fiction, and not based in reality...so I just wanted to say one thing: this stuff is very real and while these are just made up characters and made up scenarios, the guy who wrote the movie, (Taylor Sheridan), has written two other movies just like Sicario, where each film addresses other overlooked & less-discussed modern day issues in the parts of America that are often forgotten about. Those movies are, “Hell or High Water,” and “Wind River.” I STRONGLY recommend watching both of those movies! Cheers, Homies!

Man on Fire is a movie they should definitively watch! Denzel Washington's performance in this was amazing.

Marc-Antoine Beauchemin

Since Ellie is such a fan of the Mexican vibe and its shadier side in particular (and if by any chance you haven't watched them), you should definitely do reactions for Man on Fire and Desperado. Would love to rewatch them again through your eyes :) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328107/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112851/

Yordan Tsirov

Looking at Ellie reaction now we know why mafia in Bulgaria are so prolific '' who cares just sign everything'' haha

Betterfire

One of my favorite movies. The gunplay is fairly realistic. Also, Alejandro was The Collector in the MCU. Love your reactions. Also, the guy with glasses in the border scene was the main character in a decent show from a few years ago called “Burn Notice.”

Shawn

Love this movie and the reaction. You should also do Sicario 2 Soldado

Anders Pettersson

Great movie you guys picked! I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. This movies brief portrayal of Ciudad Juarez is 100% accurate. During the drug wars peak around 2009, Juarez was the deadliest city on Earth. Hangings, beheadings, mass shootings at family gatherings, it was totally out of control. I remember people being so anxious in El Paso about the possibility of the violence spilling over(which it never did thankfully). But there were the occasional stray bullets that would make it across and strike buildings and break windows but no one ever got directly hurt on the US side. You guys should totally watch No Country For Old Men soon! It takes place in Texas and also stars Josh Brolin. One of my favorites.

Joe T

I'm not sure if you realized it, but that CIA guy who wore the flip flops played Thanos in the Marvel movies.

PapaXan

Larry... they did not rape Guillermo. They just beat him and waterboarded him. (covered his face with a rag and poured water on him, which causes the feeling of drowning.)

Bondsy

Sicario is pretty realistic, and stuff like this do happen in Mexico. The cartels are very powerful and VERY brutal. It's relatively safe for tourists to go there because tourism is important to the cartels and the government since it brings a lot of money, but the corruption in Mexico is EXTREMELY high. Edit: Legalizing these drugs would hurt the cartels majorly, but it won't kill them. Drugs are not their only source of income (although it is the biggest and most profitable one).
