Not only China, Korea also suffered colonization from Japan for 35 years. Those comfort women are still alive, waiting for their apology.

Arlong's still a piece of shit though. Ironically he acts more like the celestial dragons than 99% of people in the setting

Christian Holbrook

That's our captain baby. Luffy is the GOAT

Christian Holbrook

Look if you're going to see one example of a man, Luffy's a pretty solid one

fr0st

Nah Luffy looks down on her because she is a shit person rofl her past doesn't excuse her current attitude. She literally abuses animals ffs and not wild animals like Sanji XD she kicks a damn kitten and a baby seal T.T

Mista Bones

F Yeah #JusticeforArlong

Near Uchiha

Makes you ALSO understand Arlong abit, doesn't it?

Dandy Zoran

I HATE the Celestial Dragons.

Dandy Zoran

I love Hancock and everything about her, but it is a bit sad how her introduction and her strong connection to Luffy almost erased Margaret out of existence. Margaret... Remember her?! 🥲

How genius of Oda to introduce the Celestial Dragons first, and make us hate them, before introducing characters that have experienced and escaped their evilness. By the way, I am sorry the first men the Sisters met were the terrible World Nobles, but I am happy the rest of the women on Amazon Lilly have Luffy as first man.

BashaM

Love this detail.

Daniel Atkinson

No. Amazon Lily had always a ,,No Men" policy. Its culture thing, the same as Amazonians in Greek Mythology.

Lukas Zabojnik

I think Oda was playing off of the whole "comfort women" that were a part of Japan occupation of China. If you look at the architecture and motifs I think it's pretty clear. Oda is touching on a past Japan would rather forget or just straight out deny, but has impact even to this day.

Dale Cooper

The "No men" thing is because what those monsters did to them. it wasn't shown directly because this is kid show. You can imagine who those horrible shits did to this girls.

brobed1

When Boa was talking about their past, the celestial dragons that branded them were the first men they had seen. I think that is the main reason for their personal dislike for men. I don't know if that explains the culture beforehand though.

Jhulepocan

Look, if Oda starts telling a backstory, just get ready to cry. You should just make that a habit lol You two should know by now if there's a backstory, crying is happening lmfao It has literally never not been that haha

DevilWearsAdidas

I love the pace yall are goin! Other reactors are taking a hit not watching more than than 4 eps a week!

jeremychavez

I love the sun symbol so much, the more you think about it the more special and beautiful it becomes

AiraKT

They've already seen that a bunch of times, after all

luffy bow down because he learned from vivi at snow island

Jomblopedia

The one who's taking notes is going to write a wild report, I want to read it so bad

Log

It has spoilers for later in the series so I can't recommend it generally but MelonTee's video about Boa is really good, so if you're current definitely check it out.

Dasz

i’m following a couple people that are watching one piece at like the same time bc of the LA and it’s awesome the grind you are on. Straight up passed most of them with this drop rate. can’t wait to watch till you catch up. thanks for the hard work

Strawhat Gabo

The implication is that Boa was a child sex slave, although Oda can't say that outright since kids watch/read this. There are a number of clues that this is the underlying meaning. The Celestial Dragons keeping her for her beauty, and giving her the devil fruit to taunt her, her aversion to men beyond that of the rest of the Kuja, and the fact that she seems to like Luffy more because he wasn't instantly attracted to her.

A

I've been considering getting the original claw instead of the sun. I already have Guts' brand so I figured another "You're fucked" logo would go nicely.

FluidDruid

Intriguing

Yasmine

Agreeee

Yasmine

Just got the sun tattoo last week! I love the meaning oda developed around it! And so cool you called it!

Cai Stocking

Watching this batch again made me think of a question. Is Sandersonia's Medusa attack a product of her devil fruit or does she know Life Return?

Stephen

Oda is just so good. Remember the hate Arlong had for humans ? Now you understand why. If all his crewmates were old slaves of humans, or even if he was a former slave himself, no wonder why he hated them so much.

Boost Vr

by rewatching the old episodes, you see these hints nearly everywhere.

MrMegaman94

It's good you take notes. The show starts so many new plotlines from this point. Especially names and locations might help in the future :)

IonVectora

The thing with Hancock is that, because of what she experienced, she believes that weakness is what ended up with her becoming a slave. She was vulnerable, and she and her sisters went through something horrific because of that vulnerability. So she has to constantly project this image of total power at all times. If she showed sympathy for even small animals, that it's a sign of weakness that can be exploited. It's over-the-top, and the fact that the animals she kicks aren't even seriously hurt goes to show it's more of a gag than something that's meant to seriously demonize her.

Bibi

Aahhhh yes the Sun. What a crazy foreshadow Oda has put us through 😭

Lima

S/o to the live action show, cause we are here because of how good it was ! Rewatching One Piece with you guys been so amazing and refreshing. Stay bless you two.

Andrew Weakley

I love how it's explained why she's the way she is and an incredible explanation at that. This isn't just another stop on the adventure, but an essential part of the story itself - how the current world works, and who are the types that control it

Nadeem L

fun fact: Boa hancock is the character Megan thee stallion cosplays in her Boa music video.

Fplus

hoof sounds kinda lame tho, also dragons have claws not hoofs

That Monkey D

Boa asked luffy if he would look down on her for being a former slave because, to her, being a slave was caused by her weakness and her carelessness. She knew that luffy was a good person but she was afraid that even a good person would see her shame and think less of her.

Fplus

Ughhhhh I love lore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome fight episode and awesome lore episode 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🤙🏽

Jonathan

Again I believe some subs called it the 'hoof' instead of 'claw of the celestial dragon', makes it more impactful how they think everyone is below their feet.

JibJob

It took me a long time to seriously think about it as a long One Piece fan but it’s crazy to think how amazing Luffy’s character has become and one of main reasons was just because of how much Shanks cared about him and taught him what was truly important when Luffy was a child and that’s what guided and drove Luffy to become such an inspiring heroic figure

MeteorJuice

The implications alluding to the Boa sisters’ backstory is one of the darkest things in One Piece, and I think Oda stuck the landing in how tastefully he approached the writing for it

MeteorJuice

What makes Luffy special is that he knows the difference between weakness and vulnerability, which isn't always the same. He can take advantage of a weakness (like with Crocodile and water) but never a vulnerability, as shown in this episode. There are people, both in fiction and real life, who would exploit a vulnerability when they have the upper hand, either to rub salt in the wound or ensure a commanding victory. Luffy is just not that kind of person 🥹

Marie

I love how Oda tied in Hancock's history to her portrayal. We can imagine what those degenerate celestial dragons would do to someone as beautiful as her. Many believe Hancock was Oda's attempt to reference comfort women. They were the sex slaves of the Japanese military during the war and were treated less than human. Japan actively tries to erase this especially here in Asia where majority of them were so Japanese authors don't really go out of their way to reference them. Hancock's beauty would have been the source of her suffering because you know she would have been the preferred slave for certain acts. Now she uses her beauty as the source of her strength. Also many women who have been sexually assaulted choose to get a tattoo of Medusa because that tattoo symbolizes surviving from that ordeal. So the symbol of the Kuja pirates is also quite apt for her aside from her devil fruit powers.

Cheshire Cat

Oda's ability to flip a character around in a couple of minutes is truly beautiful!

Sir Sadness

Every time I watch one piece with any reactors I bowl my eyes out 😭😭 You would think it gets easier if you know the context, but no it doesn’t 😭😭

Bushra

why is one piece so good😭😭 It makes me mad too

kittyburglar

LMAO “she’s so cute when she’s not being crazy angry!”😭😭🥹❤️

kittyburglar

You guys will find out, one piece is actually pretty dark

E N

Oda does NOT play about his backstory writing. He will always make sure he delivers, and it always hits just as he planned it to hit. This man never misses; it's crazy... I mean, there's a reason why he's up there with Shakespeare (not joking, look it up😭🙏)

Liya

NOOO I can't wait till Fridayyy 💔💔💔

Liya

Fisher Tiger legend

Simon Bjuhr

I can not imagine the amount of self restraint needed to not continue watching, because I couldn't.

B4rb4ross4

I do not think this needs to be said, they watched the episode, and its already perfectly executed by being obvious while still not being too graphic. Like the hints are in the episode

fatdabbyeet

You really can't help but admire the writing at the story continues to unfold. Hancock's story is really tragic and beautifully written. I'm torn on whether I like her at times, but she is a great character.

Ryne

What Luffy did is the path I like and I follow, just be kind and empathic and help people, even if they do wrong, even if they are mean to you, just follow what you are truly, whatever happens

Sora

“It was the sun but it wasn’t” lol. It’s always the sun lol

Ruben Munguia

Unfortunately, the eye of te Gorgon is a metaphore for.... abuse... if you know what I mean...

Yassin Mouftakir

So the no men thing I think is just kinda a natural outcome of the fact that the Amazon Lilly women only give girth to girls, since their are no native men they have to travel out to get pregnant, over time men probably showed up either from being invites or by way of conquest and because of culture differences relations soured and it became a rule that men weren't allowed in the country which then bred distrust and exaggerated rumors about the 'violence' of men.

DandyZombie

Now, imagine how significant it must be for someone as guarded and traumatized as Boa Hancock to open up to a man. That makes Luffy inherently special to her, literally the only man she can truly be herself with.

6cd5db

These uploads are always the highlight of my day, I can't help smiling the whole time watching you two react to this show, it's like I'm watching One Piece for the first time again!!

MegaDeathtron345

Oda never says it outright (understandably) but he strongly hints that the sisters endured all kinds of abuse, even sexual. And they were only 12...

6cd5db

This is a little taste why Luffy is the greatest MC ever imo. He is so selfless and kind and strong all at the same time.

John Paul

Honestly Marigold saying “After being beaten so horribly, you still spout such insolence?” Sums up basically every major fight Luffy’s in lmao

Jamie

It was said that they only give birth to women they don’t give birth to men which is why eventually men would die out there’s no men to exist so the only men that would be in the Country would be men who venture into Amazon lily and if you truly think about it the calm belt is a Death Sentence to Random explorers with no significant power so the only men that would make it there would be Pirates with great power and let’s be honest pirates are inherently bad people so if we go based on that it’s understandable why they made it So that no men can enter Amazon lily I’m certain a few evil sanjis would make it to the island and wreck havoc

SamuraiAtlas

Luffy is truly the best boyyyy!!!

Adil

FUN FACT: Boa Hancock and Amazon Lily are based on Greek mythology obviously (Medusa and Amazon female warriors) obviously. But she’s also based on the pirate Zheng Yi Sao, aka Ching Shih, a former prostitute that became a powerful female pirate with a enormous fleet of approximately 1500 ships, that ruled over the South China Sea early 1800s.

Green Hog

Also given that Medusa is often used as a symbol for people surviving SA (e.g. in tattoos), it does make sense...

Snowman9712

Boa and her sisters story ahhhhhh so so invredibly sad

DandyZombie

I don't know if there is anything into this, but as a woman reading the line "We saw men for the first time...." and "memories we don't want to remember" and then the pan shot of all the smiling silhouette's of male celestial dragons, make it sound like they were sexually abused/r@ped for years as kids. That level of trauma could definitely make someone feel anger and hate towards an entire gender.

NC

Luffy is a special character, his emotional understanding is peak, just like this beautiful show.

Hassan Allawala

I'm enjoying your reactions from Japan. You are the best One Piece reactors.

ゆっけ

😂😂

MrMegaman94

Every single time. Luffy tend to do grand things for simple reason. He never know the reasoning behind everything, he is just doing what he believe is right. Yet, the things he did, always bring a greater impact to the people around him

King

Calling him "Tiger Fisher" feels as wrong as saying "Luffy D. Monkey" 😭

Snowman9712

I love watching your guys reactions! I couldn't help but get the early access episodes for this!
