To be more accurate, he was described as being from the "Sky Islands." When the Straw Hats first met Gan Fall, he basically revealed that there are several sky islands. Skypiea was just one of them (or two if you count Upper Yard and Angel Island separately).

When this dropped back in the day, like, to the audience it was OUT OF NOWHERE, and suddenly there was a connection to arguably the greatest figure of One Piece's past. It was incredible. I think my favorite bit about Rayleigh's reveal is that this technically isn't the first time we've seen him in the anime. Go alllll the way back to Episode 8 during the flashback with Buggy and Shanks, and you'll notice someone with a very odd-yet-distinct beard giving them a talking-to. Since we know that they were both on Roger's crew, the pieces start to fall into place. Did Oda somehow have the character fully planned out from the beginning, or did he just take advantage of a early character design? We may never know, but what we do know that he made a special point to note to Toei not to have anyone identify him as the captain when they adapted it. Absolute madlad.

Haki is a topic that been mentioned before as well. The first earliest foreshadowing was Shanks in Luffy hometown, then it was on Chopper island (indirectly), and the most recent/conclusive one was in Jaya were black beard mentioned that Luffy bounty was too low for his Haki level. Which was translated as spirit in the English dub and sub, but Blackbeard uses that exact same word “Haki”
