2024-07-12 21:14:05 +0000 UTCMy personal theory is that Hina and Smoker used to date while they were training in the Navy, but they broke up while remaining friends, and their relationship changed into that of trusted and reliable co-workers who sometimes can annoy each other, but they know each other too well so they can speak honestly together. I bet that heads-tails coinflip that Smoker did is how they've settled arguments from way back in the day. Smoker flips his coin, and Hina just seemed so used to it that she immediately called Heads.

The video from the ending is just a recap of the saga, but the audio is an absolute delight. I found a fansubbed version of it on YouTube that recreated it. Otherwise she would be just a normal and rational character. Though it is true that referring to oneself in third person sound adorable and inmature in Japanese, the way she talks except for this single point does not sound like she is trying to make others think of her young at all.

2024-07-12 16:38:29 +0000 UTCFYI, Smoker's colleague/friend, Captain Hina, refers to herself in 3rd person. If you listen for it you'll hear it. Sadly these subs don't reflect that. Here is an explanation from Reddit that made sense to me: "Lot's of kids refer to themelves in the third person because there are several Japanese words for "I" and its not always clear which one a person should be using. Some girls tend to start doing it again when they want to appeal to older men. For Hina... might be a desperate attempt to seem younger than she really is." That last part sounds a bit too harsh though. I personally see it more as another quirky way of talking, as many other One Piece characters have.

What the heck is Django doing with the Marines!? - In the manga, Django gets a cover story just like Buggy and Koby that sees him befriend Fullbody, have a whole complete adventure, become a Marine, and join Captain Hina's squad. In the anime, Hina just comes outta nowhere, but in the manga, she's already been established thanks to Django's cover story. - Django's cover story was very loosely adapted (like basically only in name only) into "Django's Dance Carnival", a short film that has never been released stateside that accompanied one of the films that has also never been adapted stateside. If you can find it, it's a very cute short!

You can here it in the voice track if you know to look for it, but this is not carried over to the subtitles for some reason. - Smoker's "go to hell" is a LOT more colorful and vulgar than the subtitles let on. He is basically telling the higher-ups to eat it.

It's probably not worth delaying future canon episodes, but might be worth sticking it in the end for a 129/130/131 three-parter, if it interests you. I doubt anyone would complain. 132-143 aren't worth posting reactions for, though.

It isn’t even that she was following her own justice, she just didn’t have the choice to enact it, AND she was slapped in the face with her own weakness. You can see how bad it affected her.
