Chu is the Japanese word for the sound a kiss makes. He also has a verbal tic of saying "chu" Hacchan (the octopus fishman) is nicknamed Hachi, which is Japanese for the number 8, like how an octopus has 8 legs. Nezumi is the Japanese word for mice and other rodents and is the namesake of the navy captain that looks like a mouse. Bellemère is taken from the French "belle-mère", meaning "stepmother/ mother in law" Lots of the names in One Piece are puns or references. Edited to include PyroMaestro's correction.
