Oh no it’s him 🫠. Honestly idk why the team at UFOtable choose to adapt it like this and even make these scene so prolonged. Maybe to cut cost? Like I said in previous eps I don’t think the manga is a great piece of work but the adaptation is pretty good. Except for this part… But this archetype does seems to work to a degree in Japan as some audience like Zennitu.

I think it's difficult for people who didn't grow up in Japan (like most of the people here) to understand what is "normal" for kids to watch in Japan. This manga (and anime) is clearly geared towards elementary and middle school kids in Japan. I can see why people in the US would not approve or understand that this is geared towards kids. I'm not saying I agree that kids should watch it, but it is funny seeing people so confused about it haha...

I think that a cowardly character isn't inherently bad, but just berating the viewers ears with it incessantly is when it becomes a problem. Not every character has to the ultimate courageous hero, but also don't torture your audience when we got the message after the first 30 seconds with several more minutes of it. That being said besides a few episodes you will largely not have to suffer this and the highs and even the average content of the show I would say easily makes up for it. Oh also with Tanjiro introducing himself to the demon, you'll notice in most anime no matter how at odds two opponents are they will probably still introduce themselves because formal introductions are highly important in japanese culture.

I’m 22 now but it’s really similar in a sense that I watched what everyone watched as a kid. Like anime like dragon ball and ONE PIECE was aired on Sunday mornings so I naturally watched it bc my friends in elementary school would talk about it in school. a lot of the anime ur watching rn were considered more niche and for otakus (anime nerds) back then (around 2010) except for more main stream ones like ONE PIECE, dragon ball etc. It's only recently that non-mainstream anime has become popular across different age groups even in Japan. Nowadays, no one would think much of you watching anime in Japan, but back when I was in high school, watching it would label you as an otaku. So basically anime was considered something for kids and otakus back then, so we would know regular adults wouldn’t watch them.

For me, growing up in the states, when I was a kid I had no clue what the rest of the nation was watching as far as age groups. Just knew what my friends were watching. I had no way to measure if adults around the city, state, surrounding states, were watching the same thing. I'm sure there are demographics out now with devices tracking everything. I have demographics on my yt channel so I would assume any platform that has shows has the same information. Would be interesting to see.

Im referring to upper elementary-young teens for kids, but tbh anime is generally for those age group in Japan (or at least they’re the ones who watched until it became popular among more people recently), I’d say there’s different standards compared to western culture standards. But I also said in general bc I know some animes are for more older age groups as someone mentioned. I literally grew up in Japan so that’s my perspective

Would not blame you if you dropped the show for this character but like others said, Zenitsu is a common archetype in shounen and battle focused anime (dunno why just is) You almost always have the coward/perverted 'slapstick' character in these anime and it is the bane of a lot of anime fans. I don't know how Japanese audiences feel about it but I know Western audiences tend to hate it a LOT. I'm someone who does play a bit of devils advocate here so let me give some benefit of doubt to the author, the characterization while extremely exaggerated does have a place in the world setting. Why he gets so much screentime to yell and howl and be a nuisance I don't know. I don't think its worth it. But when you consider the dangers of demon slaying (especially with more context later) 99% of people could not stand up to an average demon. Zenitsu briefly mentioned in an offhand comment that implies he did not ask to be here, or be doing this. He lacks internal motivation to be a demon slayer where Tanjiro does. I guess this is how he 'foils' Tanjiro in a narrative sense. Again, narratively I can see why he exists but in how his character is executed its almost universal that people hate him, he is truly up there with annoying anime characters and sadly yes they are quite common. If it is any consolation his character does get more mature later...but it is much later. Would not blame you if you felt the need to drop the show tbh most of us are probably just so desensitized to his 'type' that we push through it for everything else the show offered.

Shounen/Shoujo is made for "kids" mostly in the teen demographic, anime is a lot more than just those two things and even a pretty high number of the shows tony is currently watching/has watched is absolutely in no way made for kids/early teens. Teens may like some of the shows I'm including in that list but the shows were absolutely not made for them with Vinland Saga and Cyberpunk Edgerunners being the two probably biggest examples of this. This ain't even including the literal hundreds of shows out there that are even more clear examples of not made for kids, hell like half the OVA's from the 80's and early 90's alone are the sort of things I'd absolutely not be comfortable showing to anyone under 18 and it's extremely clear the creators were not aiming for their views either.

Maybe because I've been watching anime for over a decade I'm just desensitized to the more annoying and cringy aspects and stereotypes of it all. I personally find Zenitsu kind of funny but totally get why his introduction ends up being one of the biggest walls that hold people back from enjoying the show. Rewatching this, yeah this was the most horrible introduction to Zenitsu. But in a way I'm glad they started with the worst of him and this didn't happen later, but on the other hand I understand the whiplash a new watcher would feel to this type of character. I hope you can survive next episode, then it's much more bearable from then on. I apologize you have to go through this, but I hope the rest this show has to offer can redeem the show for you 😭

Yeah nobody likes Zenitsu. His character archetype can be pretty common in battle Shonen but Zenitsu is easily one of the worst examples. Consistently annoying, a subpar character arc and way too much screen time. It is true he gets more tolerable as the show goes on but no where near good enough for me not to hate his guts 24/7.

What is geared towards kids in Japan probably would not be acceptable in most Western cultures haha... Kimetsu no yaiba was on shounen jannpu, a weekly syndicate aimed towards kids. Blood, guts, gore... that's pretty common for kids to watch in japan. I had an interesting time growing up in the US, while watching shows my grandparents would send over from Japan. Oh what different things my American friends watched haha...

This is the diverging point in the show where the tonal center shifts depending on who's on the screen currently, from here on it's gonna be a lot more "slapstick" moments comparable to the ones seen in this episode. It's a fantastically drawn and presented show but the drawbacks are quite severe, wouldn't hold it against you if you drop it from here.

Berserk, Perfect Blue, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Vinland Saga, Made in Abyss. (I usually drop the animes that have the cry baby as the mc) But everyone that has watched anime as a kid to an adult will tell you that they are made to show how great the character development is. I wouldn't say it's common but it's not uncommon either. I guess it's cultural but characters like him are supposed to be hard to digest. It's like a new type of music artist that breaks too many boundaries for shock value but attempts to convince you it's legit. I argue that Demon Slayer fails at this. I think he should be removed from the show but few people do like him. If you plan to watch the new One Piece remake in 2025 they also have a character like this but they made it work and a lot of people love him. The creator of Demon slayer probably got inspired by it.

Zenitsu was created to be a really annoying character at the beginning. It' s clear looking at the Tanjiro's expression. Zenitsu himself knows that he is unpleasant because of his behavior and he hates himself for it, over the course of the next episodes and seasons he evolves and I personally really appreciate him ( especially for something that he does in season 2, no spoiler)

Favorite character of the show. Zenitsu.

He is written to be the annoying for sure. Sadly the VA tries his absolute best to fuck our heads, with his voice. The character is ass for many fans, but to be honest he still has his moments so he is not a 0/10.

I skipped all scenes with Zenistu 😂 the scenes without him are still good or even really good, at least until the end of season 2 (I never felt like continuing after that, maybe he gets better but that’s way too long for me to give a character like this the time of day lol)

He’s around for a long time but they do tone him back a lot more after the first season. He has some very cool moments mixed in as well but he is the wall of entry to this show if I’m being honest. All I will say is if you don’t like his character don’t even bother watching black clover

I stopped watching when Zenitsu came in. I was kinda feeling the show (awesome animation aside, i was like eh on the series) but he took me right the hell out of it.

Its a lot less annoying in the manga since you can set his "tone" yourself. He does become a decent character

Honestly think it might have been the manga writer’s intention to make him this annoying to make the other “special” moments he has stand out more. 😅 It’s sad it has to be this way because those moments are awesome and well animated.

A lot of people like to compare this as bad writing for a “nervous or coward” character. Often compared to the great writing of Stark from Frieren as a well written coward character

This character is actually one of the main drawbacks to this anime for most people. I will say he does get “slightly” better over the first couple seasons, but he finally comes around in the newest season. It’s an unfortunate character design.

Zenitsu lasts. The good alternates with the Zenitsu, he'll always be in the show and have these moments. That being said the animation and music continue to be amazing throughout

Despite it being a show where people get beheaded like every episode it's also a kids show lol, thats why hes there. Kind of the weird thing about a lot of this genre
