Leo Perez

do I need to answer back to Tony-san, if not plz just ignore, it seems no needing for kind of discuss from me. really nothing. but it was not right place, I apologize for it. I am just excited as I am still have interested how forigner really recognize JPN culture. Without checking history old writings culture and sub-culture. It maybe easy way to search for ex “the Japan MUSIC AWARD“, when YT musician react to JPN MUSIC today. But even without such knowledge, a few musician oliginally analyze actually, it seems not only music logic but also history knowledge needing for differency. I will stop here for now, I don'want to disterve nor be scolded outside ^^;

koax I.N

Season 1 episode 14 was the 1st ptsd episode for me. I was not expecting that but it was a reminder of what kind of world this is and how the powerless are treated. Same with this episode

Roluchi

Man this episode reminds me of season 1 episode 14. It really shows no matter how charismatic or nice people can try to be they are capable of doing some heinous things. Definitely didn’t expect how the conflict was gonna end for both episodes

Roluchi

Man that was hard to watch again. The urge to look at my phone and just look away was there.

Xan Acktor

@Tony Lolol I know man but it hurt. I cant hear the song the same way anymore. Have a good Labor day dude.

Xan Acktor

@Xan LMAOOOOOO I have only said stuff a couple times 😅😅😅

DrumRollTony

@Ethen Hines Ive just been skipping the opening segment of Tonys reactions when Paradox plays. He can say whatever he thinks about the song and i dont have to hear it because it hurts my soul. lol Its just a difference of what we like and thats ok.

Xan Acktor

@SKAOG Fax I was literally gonna say that

Ethan Hines

@Ethan Patreon needs to copy YouTube and display who you're "@ing", so that there's no uncertainity over who you are directing the reply to.

SKAOG

I just said that because I wanted to end the conversation because it feels like you’re getting pissed off at me and I’d rather not have a creator that I like be irritated because of a conversation I started. Also, i was saying “maybe, who knows” to the Joey guy, not you @DrumRollTony

Ethan Hines

"Maybe, who knows" The person that does music for a living already gave you some context 😅💀

DrumRollTony

Maybe. Who knows.

Ethan Hines

Honestly I don't think it's a jp thing because he hits his vowels the exact way a early 2000s US emo/scene metal band would lol

JoeyGuy7

lol sorry to bother you, never mind. Enjoy your vacation. Looking forward to your next Jojo and Vinland reactions.

Ethan Hines

I KNOW and I'm saying other Japanese vocals... lol fuck it, I'm on vacation. Why tf am I on patreon

DrumRollTony

Not trying to insult your listening. Just providing some context. I’m also a musician (a drummer as well), but you’re far more qualified than me.

Ethan Hines

I know. I was just talking about how you said it was a weird choice of vowel placement. It could just be his accent.

Ethan Hines

No. The whole season has been building up and showing how much of a coward Ketil is and how he’s incapable of standing up for himself. If he was really a good man, he would have put his foot down and wouldn’t have allowed the children to be beaten at all. But instead, he stops his son whom he is afraid of and does the beating himself. What he did to Arnheid is him showing his true colors.

Ethan Hines

I mean...I listen to Japanese vocals for hours every day. Hear plenty of great vocals in those hours

DrumRollTony

By the way, regarding your comments on the opening: the guy who sings it is Japanese. So, on some level, he probably can’t help the way he says his vowel sounds in English.

Ethan Hines

100% will not create any drama content. I suggest you move past them and ignore

DrumRollTony

I hope you will talk about this comment on the next episode

Haiiro

this story was written in the modern time for modern viewers, ketil sucks bro lmaooo

cue

Remember having a slave is BAD. Having a sex slave is WORSE. Beating this now pregnant sex slave because she tried to not be a sex slave anymore is TERRIBLE.

Bileg_n

Holy shit cant believe there's guy out here defending Ketil. Literally make my blood boil reading his comments...

Bileg_n

yeah this one's rough

Marthan

Yeah the Ketil sympathizing and excuses are absurd to have even one person spouting. I have a lot to say on his character and the overall situation because while I absolutely see him as a delusional coward with fragile pride that is too easily swayed into doing horrible things I do think there is some nuance here. Basically how I see Ketil is that it is beyond easy to be the "good guy" when your a wealthy land owner with no real problems and thats when he tried to embody that, even if his lack of spine and objectivity regularly got in the way of him truly embodying doing good even during the easiest of times. He was delusional as hell being caught up in trying to "look" like he was a strong leader and treating people well while crying to his sex slave about how hard it is, plus the absurdity of thinking his sex slave actually loved him back and that that whole situation was in anyway acceptable. He's like the caviar socialists of today attending some prestigious college on his big oil CEO daddies dime thinking he's one of the good one's just because he says people should be treated equally (without ever volunteering, donating, speaking out on the harm his wealth benefits from or taking direct action for making this equal or more fair treatment a reality) and that him occasionally giving the homeless dude on the street corner a dollar or two every now and then makes him some fighter for the plight of the underprivileged, its just delusional and gross and clearly just doing the easiest "good" things in the world and believing that makes him THE good guy instead of actually making real effort to do the good he has deluded himself into believing he is. It's easy to be good when you're a rich land owner who is effectively "above" everyone in the area but it takes a truly good person to do the right thing when faced with adversity something Ketil never did but characters like Thorfinn, Einar, Sverkal and the child thief who took his sisters punishment had the strength to do. I think the story is essentially using him as an example of how good intentions isn't enough and can even build up people to fail with terrible consequence to those around them. You need to be objective and proactive in your perception of what's right and Ketil isn't that in the slightest even if he may want to be and wanting to be good isn't enough especially when your reaction to consequence is to throw all that wanna be good guy stuff out the window and go full "woe is me" villain.

Levi Blair

This is straight up a terrible take on all fronts, you gotta be trolling.

A37

That's cool and all but he beat pregnant woman half to death.

Highside

If you don't understand that ketil is not a bad person then you missed the entire point of the show. It really shouldn't be rocket science that if it seems like everything is good and that you have a good relationship with everyone when you leave your farm and when you come back they tried to escape (which would be viewed as a betrayal in those times), then of course you would be angry. Also, the "but slavery is wrong regardless of the era" argument while true is irrelevant. You (who are reading this right now) also probably holds many beliefs and practices which will be considered immoral and barbaric 700 years from now (the same amount of distance between the setting of vinland saga and modern times). If you think you are superior to ketil (who would be considered a more moral man than most in his time) you are no different than the retainers who look down on the slaves because it is simply the common belief in those times. Sorry to write a wall of text but vinand saga is trying to make a point. It is not simply entertainment. It is telling you to check your own biases. Don't just be a knucklehead and assume you know everything and judge and hate other people. I'm not "soft" on ketil because I'm pro slavery or something. I'm not even white ffs.

JujutsuKaisenFan

Ketil is a small man as you said. No such thing as a good slave owner. Always fun watching your reactions man!

Bleckers

It absolutely was. His fear of looking weak in front of his men motivated his actions despite his moral compass telling him to take a different route. He felt that showing “weakness” would compromise the respect warriors have in him because of the Iron Fist namesake he claims. In his heart he knew he shouldn’t hurt that kid yet lacked the strength to stand by how he felt despite having the power to do so. His fear of how it may make him look forced his actions which came from the weakness he is trying to hide.

Tyler Owens

I never understood the logic of saying that Ketil was just “having a bad day” and that he’s still treats his other slaves better than most masters. When defending Ketil, people will bring up Askeladd, but he was intentionally written to be neither a good or bad character according to an interview by the author (but he was portrayed as a barbarian who underneath the surface, had honorable intentions).

James

Yeah it happened to a lot of other reaction channels too.

Mirrorline

he was never nice to her my dude. She was his slave and he had power over her. There is no equal footing or ability to express any actual feelings in a power dynamic like that.

FullHeart

Yea I was like uhhhhhhhh

DrumRollTony

Ah I thought that I can avoid Ketil’s sympathiser here…alas..very dissapointing to see them even here. Ketil is a coward that’s why he was “nice”. When he is desperate, he showed his true color.

Mirrorline

The show has done a pretty good job avoiding the trope of hurting a female character to give a male character some growth (considering the setting, though we also didn't have one in the main cast in s1, but the secondary female characters at least didn't get hurt just for shock value/giving the MC some BS motivation), but the moment I saw Arhnheid I knew, man. Not necessarily a criticism, it's pretty realistic and well written, tropes are only bad when bad writers use them, still makes my stomach knot though, poor Arnheid.

LegionaresCZ

At the beginning of the episode Ketil was shaken. He only becomes angry after hearing the news about arnheid. I think this is because he feels personally injured by someone he tried to be nice to. I don't think it was about wealth/power.

JujutsuKaisenFan

Nah this person is wrong, the point of showing Ketil’s mercy towards the children is to give the context that it’s the preservation of wealth/power that can motivate seemingly good people to do objectively horrible things. Don’t listen to this commenter, they are wrong but you know that. He’s a slave owner and abuser, he is not good even if he does good things sometimes.

Tyler Owens

9:05 i believe Thorfinn's issue is that he doesn't want to harm anyone at all anymore, regardless of the reason and how minor the damage may be. Even if he has a good reason, he'd rather not do it, as that is his oath. (and that ghost Askeladd when Thorfinn was about to fight Snake said that your opposing party might also have a good reason to use violence)

SKAOG

Umm ok 👍

DrumRollTony

Anyway, my previous comment was just to say that (imo) you aren't just supposed to think "Ketil bad". That's why they showed the scene where Ketil feels so sad about beating those two thieving children (to show that he is empathetic), and where he tells Einar and thorfinn at the beginning of the season they can buy back their freedom (he wants to be friends with those on his farm) or when he refused to punish the retainers for destroying the crops and thorfinn and einar for fighting free men (he doesn't view the slaves as lesser humans to the retainers, he simply views slaves as a business asset. He doesn't dehumanized them)

JujutsuKaisenFan

Having sex slaves is supposed to be normal in this time. Also, from Ketils perspective, he's been altruistic to everyone (letting slaves buy their freedom and letting them become retainers on his farm) but he feels that despite how hard he tries to be a good person everyone (including the king who he went out of his way to make an offering to) has betrayed and sneered at him. Of course in the modern era the entire situation is unacceptable but Ketil's treatment of everyone on the farm is very generous for the time. Also, I don't think the author intends for the audience to view ketil's actions as due to toxic masculinity. The show is more advocating a Christian worldview. It is often referred to as "Christian Propaganda" (recall the verse from ecclesiates and thorfinns developing interest in the bible). It is advocating over and over again to "turn the other cheek" and accept violence from others. It also admits that there are instances where violence is necessary (but it should never be used for revenge or bullying, no matter how nasty, spoiled or arrogant those that hate you might be).

JujutsuKaisenFan

Yeah very accurate. Ketil is legitamely the definition of a "small man".

andoryuguen

I still won’t rewatch that scene with Arnheid and Ketil with the volume on, the acting is just too realistic. First time I had to pause because it made me that mad 😂 pretty rare for any fiction to get that sort of rise out of me. Poor Arnheid never had a chance.

Chelly

This all proves that Ketil was never actually “against” violence, just afraid of it. So when someone he considered to be his possession tried to “leave him”, all the feelings he harbored from his past completely drowned out his fear, and he snapped. He grew dependent on Arnheid and she obviously had no choice in the matter. And the one time she tried to make her own choice it backfired this badly. Truly sad.

Chelly

Usually villain arcs go "from good guy to bad guy" but here we have Vinland Saga with "from bad guy to worse guy".

A37

the house of cards has toppled

cue

One of the most harrowing episodes of anime in existence. The writing, the art, the sound, everything came together to make me feel as horrid as possible

Isaac Noël

Fuck your reunion scene, here's a messed up scene instead.

Lixien

I remember feeling like throwing up with disgust when I watched this for the first time. How they brought out a new low point after the previous episode is crazy

Suhas M

Love how this episode shows that Ketil at the end of the day is just a pathetic slave owner even though he was a "kinder one" at least in the start with Thorfinn and Einar.

andoryuguen

thx for captions (subtitles?) !(=´∀`)人(´∀`=) i will use it at the 2nd watching soon...anyway let's go(○ω○). (after watching 25min) I think someone had commented it was a slow pace. I think...had felt almost samely at my 1st viewing, and so, I understand those opinions, to some extent. But, now I feel like this epi was over in a half length...my P-video says it is 25 min long(+MAPPA LOGO), but 10min's feeling. I think the pacing of story is rather so fine.

koax I.N

Finally, my PTSD episode. Nothing really make us throw up after watching this.
