Details vs readability

Sorry that I'm still behind my work, but I should at least share my progress and thoughts before the end of this month. In one of the previous posts, I've mentioned that I'm temporarily ditching the big Cintiq pro and working on a smaller device for painting.

I also have a Cintiq 13 HD which is syncing to a 24" monitor. 13" is quite small for checking detail/proportion so most of the time I was staring at the 24" monitor while working. You can say there's barely any difference about working on an Intuos or a Cintiq, if drawing linework is not required in the process.

Soon after the post, again, I stumbled upon the difficulties of not being able to finish the work. After making several attempts I decided to simplify my brush sets. Like, just using the default round brush. The top image is the WIP of it, and a comparison with 2 other attempts.

You've probably heard the fact that you can only read the values while almost closing your eyes or observing in a further distance.  It is essential to have better readability so people can get the most information in a glimpse, which means a better first impression. This makes A the best choice of starting a painting. (They are probably not the best examples since I spent different amount of time on each of them)

The B attempt is the one most close to my old habit. This means I've been obsessive about dealing with details--probably because I prefer to draw rather than paint--and being neglected about the readability.

The C is made after B, but I found it very hard to control square shaped brushes. They are neither good enough for dealing with clear shadings and smooth values on cylinders/spheres. And then I make the A attempt. For quite a long period of time I have been not comfortable with painting without trying to define shapes and shadings. But I believe to handle the bigger picture --values I mean-- first, and then deal with the details, will be much easier than the opposite.

Anyway, I'm working on the A attempt and hopefully will be able to deliever the rewards in Octorber. Sorry for the waiting, I really like this drawing--it's probably my favorite one in decades-- and want to make the result as best as I can.

Thank you for bearing with my gibberish😅Judging from the past things often ended up with me hitting a wall. But I can still see some improvement comparing with where I was last year and your support definitely motivates me a lot for keeping going. ❤️

I really love seeing your process and hearing your thoughts behind it. Can't wait to see what you end up with.

Thank you <3 Welp it's more like I always pick the wrong way first so it ends up like I'm trying new methods endlessly. I really hope this time I'm on the right track. Aw I also really want to try Ipad pro. But I still have many doubts about it and dare not to buy one. I only had a chance to test on Ipad (not pro) but I can only make child's drawing on it LOL. But miraculously the friend who owns that iPad is able to use it for making doujins. If you're getting one before me, let me know your thoughts!

Aw thank you for your support and patience. 🥰

It's very interesting to see the different approaches to the piece and how they can change the readability and the shapes of the overall image. It's also very inspiring to see how much you experiment with your pieces to get the look that will end up the best and to see that it's an ever growing process of finding out new ways to do things. Have you ever tested doing any art on an iPad Pro? It's been getting more popular lately, and I'm planning to try one soon myself. I would be curious to know how it compares to the Cintiq from your opinion. Thank you as always for sharing your processes!

Nice!
