G-Companion: A Non-Exhaustive MSB Guide to Media that Influenced G Gundam
Added 2026-01-28 21:30:02 +0000 UTCAs Thom mentioned in Season 11 Episode 1, director Imagawa loves to talk about his inspirations and influences - so we've compiled a list of works he's mentioned, along with some of Imagawa's early work as a director, and have started watching those works!
We will post the latest here, every week or so, for any of you who would like to watch/listen/read along.
Without further ado, these are the works we watched for background before we even started G Gundam, and for Episode 1:
Aura Battler Dunbine, TV Anime, 1983, Series Director Tomino Yoshiyuki

Why did we watch it? Imagawa's first time as an episode director was on this series, where he directed episodes 4, 9, 14, 19, 25, 32, 37, 41, and 46. He also storyboarded episodes 4, 9, 14, 19, 21, 25, 28, 32, 37, 41, 46 (all of the episodes he directed, plus 2 more). It gave us a sense for his style as a director.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Movie, 1975, Directed by Jim Sharman

Why did we watch it? Cited by Imagawa as extremely personally influential from a young age.
Ginger E Fred (Ginger and Fred), Movie, 1986, Directed by Federico Fellini

Why did we watch it? Imagawa cites the film as having inspired his depiction of Rome in episode 1 of G Gundam (he also mentions several other Fellini films as influencing him artistically).
Next time: What we watched (and listened to!) for G Gundam episode 2...

Oh nice. I've been meaning to get around to watching Dunbine, even more reason to!
