This story is about Gryla, a mountain-dwelling giantess of the Icelandic Christmas Folklore. In writings, she is depicted as a vile, ugly beggar woman that attempts to steal disobedient children; that she later cooks up into a stew and eats with her husband and 13 sons, The Yule Lads.
I love stories that challenge the traditional folklore, and instead tells the other side of the story. Perhaps the disobedient boys & girls were just lonely and sad because they were neglected by their parents, and acted out to get any shred of attention from them. And perhaps Gryla is a good mother that sees this truth, and visits these children to make them feel better and loved. This resulted in angry, delusional parents making up stories to slander Gryla and her family; thus, covering up their own mistakes, and bad parenting.
