Should I continue using AI-Generated Artwork?

EDIT: PLEASE READ: My Decision Regarding AI Artwork

-x-X-x-

Hey everyone, so my use of AI-generated artwork in my latest free write The Soul Engine (check it out now!) prompted a discussion between me and one of my patrons about whether I should be supporting AI Artwork or not.

Put simply, I want to hear all of your opinions on AI Artwork and get a discussion going on whether you all want me to use it or swear off of it going forward.

If the majority of people vote for me not to use AI-Generated Artwork, I'll abide by that. Even if its a sizable minority of people turn out to be against it and I also see some good reasons in the comments for not doing it, I might stop using it.

I guess my current personal stance on AI is that it's probably not going anywhere and if we're stuck with it, I might as well use it to enhance my writing (not by actually having it write for me, but by having it generate images that inspire me and also that help you all picture my characters better). That said, there might be an argument to be made about the harm that AI is doing to the art community and what have you.

What do you all think? (It's okay if you just don't care, but I considered this a serious enough discussion topic that I didn't want to add a 'joke' option to the poll tbh.)

Comments

I would say if its an original story with an original character then a generic picture from AI would be ok. However, don't over do it and maybe do some research in how which ever ai service you're using generates its images. Also i don't think the term AI is really correct when talking about these programs. At best its a complex algorithm that can generate images based on database and the users inputs. This is just my opinion though feel free to disagree.

By this logic, the words you've just written are based off of others' previous efforts to create a written language to communicate with others. You are using it without crediting them. Further, the authors' use of allegory, metaphor, even simply using the IP involved to make fanfiction gives no compensation to the original authors/creators. The benefits of Ai allow new surgical implants, the sequencing of genes, a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts. Heck, even simple spell check is a useful tool that takes its genesis from a collection of previously written words to better the current individual's creation. I don't know, I always see progress as standing on predecessors shoulders, as opposed to their necks. But, I acknowledge your emotion and passion on the topic, and am not completely set in my opinion. My general optimistic attitude, perhaps. Either way, good points, and I hope I didn't offend with my response, none was intended (I'm just kicking myself for missing the initial discussion). Wishing you the best.

I mean, the AI is trained off of other people’s work without their permission, and often without their knowledge. It is art theft, plain and simple. AI writing is also training models off of freely available fanfiction sites like ffnet or AO3, which probably means your stuff has been run through it a few times before. Imagine if someone drew some art then used an AI trained on your writings to write a story to go along with it. I don’t know about you, but I’d be absolutely livid. It’s also really, really ugly to look at, no matter how much you fiddle with it. Edit: Literally got ninja’d in the time it took me to write this, lol

Honestly, I'm not that impressed with AI generated content compared to- you know- ACTUAL artists. That being said, it's not not exactly black or white. Do I think anyone should use AI generated artwork instead of human-made artwork? Absolutely not! However, after reading the poll question very carefully, that's not the situation. Clearly, the choice is between taking advantage of AI artwork or having none at all. In this case, I think it's better to use AI artwork, even if human-made artwork is a better choice when that's a feasible option.
