Shutter Island Reaction

Shutter Island Reaction

Comments

Wow you guys followed this movie in your second language better than I did in my first language watching it. Also if you rearrange the letters in “Shutter Island” you get “Truth and Lies”

Matt Bronson

One of the pieces of music they use in this film reminds me that you need to watch Arrival! Great movie that really makes you think and poses deep philosophical questions. Inception is another good one. - Arrival - Inception

Chris

Can you react to the movie "Black Hawk Down"

DJ

He pretended to be back in the loop so that he could be lobotomized and essentially kill himself. The line was "Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?" Teddy/Andrew would rather die as a good man than live as a monster who killed his wife and feels he killed his kids because he didn't heed his wife's warning signs of mental problems. 👨🏾‍⚕️💉Hela, you gotta let it go, there is no conspiracy.😄. . . . . . . . . .Cigarette?🙂🚬😶

RichieBIV

Good job Ladies! I think you nailed the "needle" on the head in your conclusions. Sad Story, but I think you and I understand the Marshal's decision to have the Lobotomy procedure, to end the pain and suffering in his troubled head.

More recommendations with similar vibe The Machinist Identity Triangle Primer

Snick

I think it's Scorsese's way of emphasizing Andrew's connection with the Dachau concentration camp - and the German moral dilemma.

Tim

Lobotomy is when you put a pick/needle through the eye and damage a part of the brain and you can live but you don't feel anything. *SPOILERS* The doctor says throughout the movie that he doesn't like a primitive solution and wants to talk and heal through talking. The quote "Which would be worse? To live as a monster, or to die as a good man?" Andrew is at peace with his mind staying fractured/broken. And because he is a dangerous war Veteran they Have to use the primitive solution of the Lobotomy so he doesn't hurt others.

N2Joker

Chi was correct, he did remember everything at the end but he chose to kill himself (metaphorically with the lobotomy)...bc he'd rather die with the illusion than live with himself (the monster)

TylerNorCal

When I was younger working at a mental institution as a janitor Before they closed it. Greystone Park Psychiatric facilities we used to call people like this.. Residual Ghost because they keep resetting their stories then they will talk to you like it's any other day. And then they reset themselves to whatever story they invented for themselves.

Jay Wolfe

I believe the "big" ? at the end has a dual meaning. Andrew knew he no longer wanted to live as a "monster'/violent and delusional, so it's better to "die'/be lobotomized. But, it's also a question that vast numbers of Germans had to ask themselves under the Nazi's: "Should I die a good man (like Bonhoeffer - resisting) or live as a monster by going along?" And, with his Dachau experience, Andrew had pondered that already for many years.

Tim

I love this movie. The atmosphere is so intense (as Chi says, almost like a horror movie) and then there's the great plot twist at the end. In my opinion one of Scorsese and DiCaprio's best collaborations. Your analysis at the end was spot on. DiCaprio's character was aware of his guilt and didn't want to live with it. You could see that in the last question he asked and in the fact that he went along with the doctors without resistance. If he had really been in Teddy's character he would have fought tooth and nail. If you want to see an even crazier movie I recommend Sucker Punch (2011). A great movie by Zack Snyder, he made 300 and some of the DC movies (For example Justice League). That was an awesome reaction ladies as always!💜

"Maybe we can ask the dolphin? There's some fish that can help us..." Hella might be the funniest person ever.

Henry N.

At the end, it shows he is actually in a well manicured hospital setting, not a rugged wild island. It makes me wonder what he was actually doing while hallucinating that he is on the boat, climbing down a cliff wall, blowing up a car or wandering through a civil war fort. In other words, how much of the fantasy was role play and how much was hallucinating?

Dav Cald

Great reaction again! Awesome movie! I have a feeling 'Inception' will be dropping soon! Good to see you back Ivy!

Yo Get rid of Ivy She doesn’t speak english

Joe Laster

Absolutely! It took me a couple of viewings to truly appreciate the depth of the story and pick up on the little hints throughout.

Nathanial House

The only thing that doesn't square with me is why was the warden wearing an SS looking uniform?

Ponchlord

He was pretending at the end so they would give him a lobotomy and he would never remember again. That's why he asks if it's better to live as a monster or die as a good man. The Doctor(his pretend partner) calls his fake name "Chuck" and he doesn't respond.

KD

I'm on team Chi ~ I agree with her explanation 🕵️

Proto Type

I love Hella's passion though. 🤣 and when Hella and Ivy trying to catch Leo when he was climbing down.

Daryl

Coherence is a fantastic hidden gem, watched it in a double part with Triangle.

Patrick

Chi's correct at the end. Teddy pretended to be still insane when he talked to the Hulk. He can't accept what his wife did to the children and what he did to his wife. He chose death. To die a good man.

Daryl

Amazing reaction, was great seeing Ivy locking onto suspicious hints early on. After this I have to recommend the very stylistic and suspenseful thriller/horror filmography of the director Robert Eggers, particularly The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse (2019), The Northman (2022) and very recently Nosferatu (2024). Amazingly filmed and acted set of movies.

Patrick

One of the best for sure, well done to Chi for getting the ending bang on. Hella's theories will do well if you guys decide to watch Inception which is even more complicated, if you do just make sure to watch the Google Talk on the movie after otherwise you will miss a lot of the film. Also Ivy being stun locked to the point of Hella asking if she was ok was all too real.

Lou

I love how Hella kept trying to add more to it thinking Laeddis was still innocent and the Dr.s were the bad guys. Sorry, Hella, but Teddy was the patient and really did kill his wife. He couldn't accept it and built a whole new personality to escape it. I was really impressed how early Ivy figured out that Daniels/Laeddis was the 67th patient. I believe in the end he actually knew what he was doing and was choosing to get the lobotomy instead of living with the truth of what he did. He was going "die a good man." He basically was going to kill off his good personality instead of living as a monster. Great reaction, as usual! 😊

Jeffrey Roberts

This movie is so different the 2nd time you watch it. You notice so many little things that prove Leo was crazy the whole time.

Luke Drumm

For me it is clear that Teddy the cop and Andrew the patient are one person. The doctors have set up an elaborate role-play to allow him to investigate and come to the truth. His wife kid his children and he murdered his wife. What is unclear for me is if Teddy/Andrew is CHOOSING to live in denial and WANTS to get lobotomized so he can "die" as Teddy or if he has truly fallen back into his delusion. Hela describes this movie as "fucking with the mind", and we actually call these types of films a "Mild fuck". Some other good movies in this category. Jacob's Ladder (1990) not the remake. Donnie Darko The Prestige (2006) Inception (2010) You'll probably watch this one as it has Leo There's also two very low-budget films that might not be good for the channel because they are not well known, but they are great. COHERENCE - I really love this film PRIMER - Time Travel movie

Steven Roy

You girls did great with this reaction.

matthew

Great reaction! Love watching movies with you ladies. I'm glad you finally figured it out in the end. Chi and Ivy are correct. It's a crazy and complicated movie. Glad you seemed to like it.

Dustin

I probably would classify most of those movies as "iconic." The exception being Goonies, maybe Josey Wales -although I'd argue Good, Bad, and Ugly is more iconic.

Dustin

I don't think scorsee would mind his movies being referred to as Leo movies lol; they both always hold eachother in high regard even over the years when it seems as though most hollywood professional relationships sour

Thalanoth

I love the Leo reactions keep them coming

matthew

Yesssss i love this movie!!!! Martin Scorsese DiCapio rabbit hole, let's go!!! They did a lot of great movies together!!!

Daryl

Oh great movie!! One of the most twist movies out there!!!

Jay Wolfe

While I didn't subscribe to your Patreon for movies, just Game of Thrones, there are a lot of iconic films you haven't seen. A brief list: Empire of the Sun (Steven Spielberg) Little Shop of Horrors (1986) The Sand Pebbles The Goonies (Steven Spielberg) Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick) Labyrinth The Outlaw Josey Wales Dark City The Accidental Tourist

Mr Jackpots

I feel like it's close enough to killer... It just doesn't look as impressive when you stack it up against that *other* 2010 DiCaprio mindbender about a guy with a troubled past...

Chris Carman

I feel like this movie has all the ingredients to be amazing, but just never really comes together in a way that's completely satisfying.
