The Boomer

Or the weird electric bark like noise blasting through town at 3:00 am.

Based on real events kinda.

Weird title I know but I think that’s what the gang named the creature.

There’s a weird sound that sounds often around the place I live during the night. I could describe it as a sort of a booming electric bark from some kind of dog-frog creature. I don’t know what makes the noise, but it may be from some kind of machine, there’s a ton of factories around my neighborhood. When it sounds you can hear the dogs from all around the place barking at it.

Anyway, one night I tried to draw how I imagine a creature that could be making that noise would look like. Then I gave it another shot because the first thing I drew looked kind of cute. And I thought about doing a piece with it. The design went through a number of extra changes to make it work with the composition, make it look scarier and there was a weird phase when I was sure I had seen that design before so I changed it a bit more just to make sure I wasn’t stealing it from somewhere. I hope that’s not the case still.

When I started coloring it I wasn't sure what I was going for with the style for him. I tried a couple of styles and wasn’t completely convinced with any but when I ended up combining them by accident it came this weird, almost claymation style that I leaned in after that. I like to think that having it look almost 3d like in front of the very 2d characters makes it especially strange for them in their world, almost like what a 4 dimensions creature would look like for us.

Here the Whisperers went outside late at night looking for the origin of said sound, to their misfortune, they found it. Now they’ll have to discover if they can run faster than it.

The creature in question seems to be someone’s pet that ran away or something like that, which only makes the mystery even more confusing for the gang. I'm not sure still but he may be like a very big a mean dog. It want's to love, but it only knows how to hurt. I can’t wait to discover where this will lead eventually, and I’ll do it as soon as I come up with it.

You may have noticed that the doll does not appear in this piece, There’s two reasons for that. The in-universe one is that she knew she couldn’t outrun the creature so she hid away somewhere and now is looking for a knife or something.

The real reason is that I simply felt like there was not room for her in the composition this time. Not the only time it has happened. I may or may not continue this one, to feature her somewhere.

I did this as I plan to get some pieces with the whisperers done for october. I suddenly had a good number of ideas with them.

This piece features, as usual, The Yes Coyote graffiti that I apparently like to put everywhere. There’s a story about that thing and I’ll get to it eventually. And also here you can find my VW Golf toy car that I also love to put in my drawings.
