That 70s Show Retrospective

That 70s Show was a series I regularly watched back when I was younger, so this was a fun trip down memory lane. Only my memory stops at roughly season 4. As you'll see in this retrospective, with good reason.

The two biggest challenges for this video was trying not to be overly negative about the later seasons, and finding some way to talk about Danny Masterson. While I think I managed the first part of that equation, the second one, maybe not so much. That said, I think it still turned out OK.

If there's a sudden decision in the trial (which seems unlikely), I'll have to amend the video before posting.

This cut might be rough than others, so more so than usual, please let me know if there's any wonky audio, bad edits, etc. Real life got very hectic this week, so I only had time for one full pass, and a few smaller ones to clean everything up. I'm hoping the fact that I've made 15 of these big videos will mean I'm getting better, and not getting sloppier.

Thanks again to everyone for your continued support!

Edit - There's a new version of the video as of the time this post was updated (4:49 PM, ET, October 16). The only changes made were small bits of bad audio cut, and a few awkward transitions smoothed out.

You're completely right about Fez. He's part of an unfortunate tradition of foreigners who are inherently weird that sitcoms like to trot out every now and again. There are older examples like Latka from Taxi or Balki from Perfect Strangers. It could probably be its own video. I would love to do a Star Trek video of some kind, though I'm a little worried that it's been done to death on YouTube. And I'm not sure it would meet the standards of more die hard Star Trek fans. That said, I would like to one day make a video about why I enjoy Picard so much. We'll see how things go.

I was only ever able to watch random reruns from That 70s Show, so it's illuminating to have the timeline drawn out explicitly. I remember liking some eps and hating others, and that turned me off from watching consistently. Now, though, I see that the ones that I liked were from earlier seasons, and those that didn't click were from later seasons. Go figure. With regards to Fez—it's interesting but deeply disappointing to see such a clear predecessor of a character from a much lesser show: Raj of The Big Bang Theory. The "foreigner with an accent" who is desperate for sex, lusts after women, and is deeply inappropriate (to the point of being a total creep) with those around him. I'm sure Fez has his own predecessors in other media, but it's sad to see how such a trope gets passed down through time. At any rate, I think you handled some of the more difficult aspects of this show with a lot of the care that such topics deserve. Thanks for another great retrospective! (Also, not a sitcom, but since you mentioned it... If you ever decide to do a Star Trek retrospective, I'd watch it in a heartbeat)

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm way behind on my TV, but I'll try to get around to that one.

Kurtwood Smith is also in the amazon prime series Patriot. It's quite funny and makes fun of America's imperialism. Katie Stoll of Some more news was raving about it for a while.
