Our research took place during the day, and the day alone. The local tribes warn against visiting the site at night, but refused to disclose more, and our archaeological linguists had not yet deciphered the symbols and patterns etched into the ziggurats.
While at first skeptical, evidence of their claims were not ever too far out of perception. In one instance, our investigations into this unearthly place pushed us towards dusk. At first we thought the shadows from the trees were playing tricks with our eyes, but as we hurried off-site, I witnessed what I was sure were the vines and roots encroaching outside of the tree line at an alarming rate!
As an experiment we felled a mule, injured on the journey, and left it's body intact on the ziggurat just before sunset. When we returned, no evidence of the mule existed. Even the grass, bloodied from the felled animal at dusk, was clean and perhaps even more vibrant of green than we remember.
Perhaps the locals had filled us with superstition. Perhaps this is all just a trick of the light. Not one of us, however, will volunteer to stay past dusk.
