'Neville and Bigsby's Traveling Circus'. We saw the adverts posted across their wagons as they headed down the trail. Easy score, or so we thought. Some of the boys were havin' themselves a good laugh about making them perform for us after we robbed 'em blind.
Entering the camp, we found a pair of halflings, an elf playing a lute, and an older, scrawny dwarf, enjoying their campfire together. The seven of us, ignorant and overconfident in the situation we were stumbling into, ran in with arms drawn demanding their coin, trinkets, and baubles.
To our surprise, the little folk burst out in laughter. The elf, quietly smiling, continued to play his tune. The Dwarf, addressing us directly, said "If ye've come to rob us, yer in the wrong place. But you are welcome to share the fire, if ye'd like."
Infuriated, I shouted "Give us what we want, or you won't make it to your next performance. None of your parlor tricks!"
Both the halflings abruptly stopped their laughter. "Tricks?" one shrieked. "Tricks? Never belittle our talent to trivial hoaxes!"
With a snap of their fingers, our whole scheme came apart. Our swords and cudgels sparked and caught flame. The men exclaimed in surprise, dropped their weapons and tried to stamp out the flame. I held my sword firm, and strangely there was no heat, even though my sword appeared to be melting to the hilt.
"And don't forget our friends in the trees..." the old Dwarf said. He let out a whistle, and from almost every direction, the whistle was answered by dozens of others.
My men, frightened by the sudden change of our situation, ran for the hills. "Men, hold fast! It's trickery!" I shouted to no avail.
"Run along now." one Halfing stated, as if dismissing a child. "Ye don't want to see our next act."
