Injury, Workflow, and Japanese Phonetics Updates

Thank you all for your understanding. Please excuse the brevity of this post--as mentioned in the video, typing hurts quite a bit so doing my best to avoid using the keyboard.

Will be in touch again soon!

Injury, Workflow, and Japanese Phonetics Updates

Comments

Hey Dan! This is a very complicated topic but I actually plan on covering it in the future, so hopefully I'll be able to address all your questions then. Apologies for making you wait!

Dogen

Hey Dogen, I wanted to ask how repeated onomatopeia work. くるくる to me sounds like two separate words both 頭高 but I feel like I've heard a variety of different pronunciations of 擬態語

Dan

Hi Andrey, I haven't had an MRI done yet as I got a second opinion and was told it's most likely not nerve damage, but if I ever get one I'll be sure to reach out! Thanks so much!

Dogen

I love your idea!

WanderingDoc

Hey Dogen! You have helped me so much with my Japanese studies. I am an M.D./diagnostic radiologist so reading MRIs is my forte. I am happy to take a second look at your imaging when you get them. Can request the images on a CD (the viewing program/launcher is typically imbedded in there). I love to help friends interpret their imaging. If you need any help at all during this process, holler and I'll give you one of my emails. Best of luck!

I've been dealing with very similar pain for a few months and had the same results when trying to get tests done. I hope your pain improves quickly. I would consider bracing as it's helped me some.

As others have said, definitely sounds like RSI... I used to have the same problem when I had a programming job. A combination of rest, physical therapy, and braces/splints got me through it. Years later I just keep up with my exercises and self care and no longer need any reduced activity or ongoing treatment. You have good reason to be optimistic :) Also in positive thinking, this is a great growth opportunity as a creator to find new formats and ways of producing and delivering content around your current limitations. It really is true that constraints drive creative thinking! I'm excited to see what you come up with. Otherwise, recorded Q&A sounds fine; as Michael suggested some kind of video where you read text or analyze a recording and break it down would be really cool. Is there a possibility of live Q&A/livestream/live lessons for Patrons if it's not too physically taxing?

All the best Dogen! Parenting twins is already hard as it is, I hope you find time to also take care of yourself and your health. With regards to finance, do you think you could explain the credit/debit/ATM card system? Maybe it's obvious to you because it's somewhat close to the American system, but coming from a country where we have a single card doing it all, I get pretty confused about what each card is for/what they entail/how necessary they are. If you can put that in a Q&A, I'd be interested in hearing how you deal with old/returning injuries in Japan actually. Do you go straight to the hospital? Or to private specialists? I've had a nasty knee sprain on and off for a year (I'm also the "can't stay still" type) and I wanna start getting it checked out before it turns into lasting damage.

Get well, first and foremost. Your lessons are great and I'll use this time for extra review. As a thought, perhaps you could do some videos that are pronunciation exercises? What I mean is you find a public source such as a news article or a Wikipedia page that anyone can access. Then you read it in the video with proper pronunciation, calling out things that might seem tricky or are otherwise worth noting. We can use that as practice by listening to you, recording ourselves, then playing back our recordings and comparing them to yours so we can identify our mistakes and improve. Kind of like your suggestion of watching a movie and practicing pronouncing it. Using an existing source would perhaps help you avoid needing to do a lot of scripting. Not sure if it would be feasible given your injury, but I figured I'd throw it out there. Get well!

Hi 先生, I am a personal trainer who specializes in injury prevention and relief and I 100% agree that you need to rest at this point. Once the inflammation goes down (and if it is RSI) I would recommend that you do some strength work, not weights per se but bodyweight strength work. I would recommend you try and make contact with an Animal Flow instructor, there are loads of them in Japan. The guy I'd recommend is Jin Takazawa but his business Jungle Gym is located in Ichikawa, Chiba. Probably a bit far for you unless you have a trip to Tokyo lined up. The main reason I'd recommend this is because he knows the hand/wrist stretches that would help provide relief and gentle movement that will help strengthen the area to avoid further strain. I also think with the background you mention you might enjoy it. From my experience the body (especially connective tissue) can take a really long time to heal and change so you need to be cautious and patient but you also need to stress it a little to maintain strength and function. I hope my advice helps. Take as much time as you need to heal!

Natasha Mitchell

Massage Therapy also helps soft tissue issues and has helped my issues with strength in my arms ... I pinched a nerve on the right side. Take care!

Aloha from Hawaii, Dōgen! Definitely did the right thing trying to get your tests done and seeing a doctor. Rest is best! Mahalo (thank you) for always keeping us informed and please rest! Sending love and aloha to you and your family.

One thing listening to this video did was make me aware of exactly how much work you do in editing and displaying information. I’ve been following you for years and you’ve built up a lot of trust with me. Please take care of yourself first.

HB

I am so sorry you're having to deal with this! In addition to the physical pain, it sounds like this is a stressful and frustrating situation for you. Please don't push yourself--take the time you need to figure things out and get better. Your health is more important than your video schedule. I will definitely continue supporting your work on Patreon!

Sounds like you might have what I have in my hands and that is RSI. The only cure is to rest. When you feel like there's no pain any more, then you can slowly get back in to typing. It sounds like you have done the right thing by buying an ergonomic keyboard. A good ergonomic mouse and mouse pad can go a long way too. If you find it's going up to your wrist, then you can start wearing a wrist brace, which will help a lot. Welcome to aging and お大事に!
