Survivalist's Wayfinder

Wondrous item, uncommon

This handheld device has four crystalline buttons that are each associated with a different element. The device has 4 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn. While holding the device, you can use an action to expend 1 of its charges and press a button. Each button causes the device to swivel and point like a compass to the nearest relevant location, as determined by the button, for 1 hour or until another button is pressed. If there's nothing for the device to point to, it spins in place for the duration or until it's within range of something to point to.

Air. If you're outside, the device points in the direction of the nearest storm within 50 miles of you. If you're inside or underground, it points to the nearest outdoor exit within 1 mile of you.

Earth. If you're outside, the device points to the nearest cave entrance that's Medium or larger within 1 mile of you. If you're underground, it points in the direction of the nearest unpolished gemstone within 100 feet of you.

Fire. The device points to the nearest active campfire, firepit, forge, or hearth that's within 1 mile of you.

Water. The device points to the nearest source of fresh, drinkable water that's within 1 mile of you.

"A compass uses magnetism to reach a destination. This does the same, but with a different kind of magnetism. Primal, elemental magnetism, that you can only really understand once you've journeyed beyond the confines of the Material."

RAW, as the crow flies!

The Griffon's Saddlebag

So my question is in regards to being underground and detecting for air (aka the exit to outside) does it show "as the crow flies" or will it allow me to navigate a bunch of twisting, branching tunnels? In other words if I was dropped into the middle of a maze would it show me the path out or just that the exit is "to the west"?

I love this. Very cool
