Here’s a little video of my return home with a vintage hall that I had put in storage after returning home from the road. I hadn’t had a chance to take a look at the suitcase in quite a while, and realize that one of the fiery red burlesque costumes I received as a gift from my friend Freya West out of Nashville could possibly be a Katie K costume.
For those of you who don’t know about Katie K, get ready! She’s got such an incredible story, and I am honored to own several of her costumes. I would love to find out if this is a Katie K ranch dressing original from either New York or Nashville.
Katy K went from New York night life to Nashville Rockabilly royalty as an inspiring fashion designer and performer who found fashion success in NYC in the the 1980s as New Yorks "reigning Crinoline Queen". In fact, She even dressed Whitney Houston.
Upon her move to Nashville in the 90’s she opened Katy K's Ranch Dressing and melted into place like hot buttered biscuits. She was brilliant to feature adult film star and burlesque legend Kitten Natividad at her second annual fashion show at The Gas Light Lounge.
“In the 2001 book How the West was Worn: A Complete History of Western Wear, Holly George-Warren called Katy K. one of "several young American fashion designers in the 1990s who sought to emulate and reinvent the golden age of Western wear."†…. And she did!
The southern charm and rockabilly flair that she infused her shop with with took Nashville by storm and is still emulated to this day in timeless Nashville western and rockabilly fashion.
Eventually, I will unpack one of my favorite, Katie K pieces that was made for kitten Natividad. But will save that for another day. Today I’m wondering who made this costume? Were they from Nashville? Was it Katie K or was it handmade by a different performer?
