Welcome to our fun little under water adventure in the mangroves.
The Mangroves are a sweet little spot in the intertidal and coastal areas of the ocean where trees and shrubs thrive. In this environment with plenty of space to hide, new life is born. Baby sharks, squid, stingrays, fish etc. are born here and are able to hide among the roots of the trees and shrubs for safety and protection.
There are many different types of trees that grow in the mangroves due to the low oxygenated soil and slow moving water.
One of our favorite mangroves areas in Puerto Rico is called Gilligans island. As I understand it Gilligan‘s Island is now underwater after our last set of earthquakes over a year ago. It’s surreal for me to think that Island is no longer capable of receiving visitors as that is one of the places we visited most when we came here and one of the places that felt like home when we moved here. There are other mangroves that are accessible however, thank God!
This is La Parguera i’m a beautiful string of uninhabitable Maine grove islands that invite you to come and play for the day. With water levels rising and earthquake activity none of the mangroves here in Puerto Rico are safe for full-time living however fishermen do often times, build homes closer to the coast within close reach of the mangroves. Many of these homes were also sunken and destroyed after the earthquakes last year.
Have you ever visited the mangroves? What did you see? Things that I regularly see there are baby sharks, baby barracuda, baby stingrays etc.
