Garden updates

Everything in the garden seems to be growing beautifully.

The zucchini, squash, eggplant really love the hot sun and drink up a lot of water. I also figured out what was wrong with my hydroponic tower, now everything feels fresh and alive again. Unfortunately, I somehow neglected to keep the tank full. But we got it all fixed now.

My ferns are starting to get dry, they drink so much water! It’s so hard to keep up with them but it’s so fun to watch them grow. They’re getting big and bushy now.

I have always struggled with orchids, they’re so temperamental. For the last two years I’ve been trying desperately to nurture and grow orchids but sadly I keep killing them. Or so I thought!

As it turns out, if you don’t dispose of your “dead” orchid, it’s probably not dead. After about six months of hardly touching them at all, they have all bounced back! They’re looking beautiful and strong and healthy. I was over nurturing them before, they just kind of want to be left alone and watered every week.

I forget how often I need to rotate my plants. They don’t wanna live in one place forever, the sun changes, the light changes, the weather changes and they become temperamental. So it’s always interesting to try to keep them in good spirits. They each require some thing different.

Do you grow? What’s your favorite thing to grow? I really enjoy growing fruits and vegetables right now. The flowers are beautiful but out here I’m finding that it’s necessary to go more towards an edible garden. It makes more sense with the amount of water that is used. Nature already grows beautiful flowers all over this island, even in my yard, so I’m trying to spend my time focusing mostly on growing fruits and vegetables and now trying to start my first marijuana plant.

We are definitely at that point in the year were mosquitoes are a big problem so I’m putting up some netting around my breezeway to try to keep them out. I hate using chemicals, I only do that if absolutely necessary but the netting seems to be helping. I wanted to keep it cute so I actually found white netting with pearls! So now we’re keeping it extra cute💗

For my ferns I had to water them often until I started spraying them with a mister. Made a big difference

I actively try to not worry about much because I overcare, often. There are many health concerns here. Malaria is just one mosquito born illness. I can’t control that. I have friends who survived dengue fever and other mosquito illnesses plus I survived west Nile years ago before Pickers. It was awful. It was the only time Ive had a spinal tap. It was torture. But mosquitos rule here. We use a lot of incense! I just put up netting around my front breeze way to keep them out.

I love trees. Obsessed kinda. I have a few different varieties of dogwood, a magnolia and crab apple trees (which to me are very witchy)in my yard. I do all I can to keep them healthy and blooming. They are part of the family. They offer homes for birds and little highways of travel for the squirrels...they remind me to bend, not break. I think was a Druid in a past life because I love being a caretaker of trees.

Do you have to worry about malaria in Puerto Rico?
