It took me a LONG time to watch this. I love and hate this episode. Knowing how you feel about the Giles and Buffy relationship I knew how you'd react. I was NOT disappointed :D
Favourite Lexi quotes "My favourite guy in the whole world" "You can't be evil, I love you" :D and when Angel gave Buffy the book of poetry "Do you even know her?" lmao
This is one of my all time 'I love Buffy' episodes, she is an absolute queen in this, amazing. First time I watched I cheered out loud when she killed Kralik. People have talked, above, about why the Council might do this so I won't go over that again except to say that it makes perfect sense to me. You are right to want Travers hung, drawn and quartered!!
It is also a perfect test for the Watcher. They need to know if they serve the Council first, or the Slayer. In the end they got their answer so Giles is of no use to them. tbh IMO I don't think he had a choice. If he'd refused I'm sure he thought they'd send him back to England and then a new Watcher would arrive, who didn't care, and the test would go ahead anyway. Choosing to stay and do it himself meant that at least he would be around to help or pick up the pieces, if she let him. I don't think he was under any illusion that this was a good thing to do BUT I think he felt he had to do it (and he was obviously trying to argue that it shouldn't happen at all). There has also been a steady stream of clues that Giles is not well favoured by the Council AND that he's been trying to be more of 'Council' Watcher since the end of season 2. He tried it his way, he got involved with Buffy emotionally, he fell for Jenny and look what happened! IMO his sudden shift to a three piece suit (like the one Travers wore) is him attempting to 'be more professional'. I mean, he's wrong, the Council are f-ers but I can see why he is now doubting his own judgement and is possibly more willing to obey Council orders. I think his big mistake was not understanding the depth of the betrayal Buffy would feel but he was left in no doubt after that scene where he tells her what's been going on.
On rewatch another terrible scene to watch is the one when she's trying to get him to go to the ice show. As soon as she mentions it he's straight to the hypnotising crystal and trying to deflect. Under the circumstances (this is, I think the first time she's asked him to do something quite so blatantly fatherly and yet HE knows what he's about to do) it is just a very painful scene for me to watch.
Another nice touch is the final scene between the two of them in contrast to a shot in the previous episode. In Gingerbread Buffy is saying 'Don't tell me to calm down' right after her mum had found the bodies. It's shot with Giles above her on the stairs AND from a high angle so he is really looking down on her. However, at the end of this episode when he comes over it would have been easier and more comfortable to remain standing to try to treat her forehead. Instead he kneels at her feet and now he's looking up at her.
I'll stop now, I could talk about this episode for days lol
