Mouthwashing [PC] Video Review (Patreon Exclusive) No Spoilers
Added 2025-03-27 01:50:16 +0000 UTC
Mouthwashing is the latest retro polygon horror game to be making noise out there on the indie scene, so I thought I'd give it a run through and let you all in on what I think.
It was pretty short so not much time has been diverted away from the main next video - which continues to grow larger and larger. I'll have a few more bits of Patreon content out this week as well as a larger update on where the big video is.
Did you guys check out Mouthwashing? Let me know your thoughts if you did.
Catch you back here soon.
Yeah, hold W and look at imagery - I dunno if this is enough any more for the indie tragic narrative experience game. Edith Finch is like 8 years old now and that felt like it was more creative overall with controls/scenarios etc.

I feel a little mean saying it but by the end of it I really didnt have much to say about this game. So Im a little impressed you did. It's not a bad game, but outside of some of those disgusting deeds the game has you do it did feel like a lot of what I've already seen.

Oh, when I said uncommitted to a single theme I was referring to the soundtrack specifically. The game as a whole has some pretty specific themes but I'd say that more *intangible mood* or identity games like Silent Hill or Signalis have time to really solidify - here struggles to come through a bit. Maybe it's because of the length when we have to rattle off so many vignettes in such little time. Danger, safety, hopelessness, esoteric reality, it's a lot for a 2 hour game. Imagine if Silent Hill 1 had to be that length and we spent a 3rd of that at Harry's House hanging out with Cheryl before he went to the town ๐

A lot of what you said is spot on and I definitely felt the same way especially when I first played it. I do think that the game does fully commit to one (extremely dark) theme though, but I think it would have been more effective in the final more dragged on section of the game to make it more apparent and really drive it home, instead of continuously surrounding it in metaphor where only people replaying the game a several times or community analyzing it will properly understand it.

It definitely felt out of place in this case. Especially in such a dark game game that also has the classic "insincere marketing is bad" sci-fi undercurrent.

I really resonated with what you said about the games online marketing and taking grim serious art into more irony poisoning for the online well. Great review!!! Glad you ended up covering this game.

Yeah I can't help but feel some of those set pieces are the way they are to get the playtime just within reasonable for the price. I saw they made a set piece I didn't show easier in a patch - I was surprised given the type of game this is, that they made that one as relatively demanding as it was. That's a problem, despite its highlights, it feels like there's more the game could have done and yet I wanted less of some of the stuff it did do.

I kind of think this game would have been better without those half-baked, too long action set pieces. The bit where you have to walk slowly across the grates especially is bafflingly drawn out. With all the praise this got last year, it all just felt sort of disappointing. Decent in its own right, great at points, but it doesn't really do anything that fresh or unique to earn its claim to fame.
