2025-03-15 23:05:11 +0000 UTCwhite afab with zero interest in sports, i knew babe ruth was white. i did, however, convince myself for years that watership down was about military stuff. when i was little i remembered hearing that there was a movie called "'something' down" that was about animals, so when i saw a movie called "black hawk down" was on TV i assumed 'oh! that must be it!'. needless to say my confusion and disappointment were immeasurable. when later i heard people talking about watership down i only remembered my betrayal and thought, "well surely if it's called waterSHIP down it has to be another war story, that's definitely not for me." it wasn't until 4 years ago when my spouse got a graphic novelization that i realized, "wait....it's about rabbits?!". i've now read both that version and the original, and i don't know if i'll ever be able to forgive myself for depriving my childhood self a book i would've been obsessed with.

2025-01-21 18:35:04 +0000 UTCthe idea that depression is a chemical imbalance really hasnt been verified by the evidence. it kind of stems from pharmaceutical companies trying to push their drugs. some people are genetically predisposed to depression, have childhoods or traumatic experiences that give rise to depressive symptoms, and/or undergo an experience that triggers a depressive episode that can evolve into major depressive disorder. can depression medications help people? yes but they need paired with other interventions like therapy or emdr etc. but the evidence suggesting it is a chemical imbalance stems from the use of drugs in depression treatment. mayas point about it not being something you can think out of might be from the structure of the brain and lacking other ways of thinking but even that is a little controversial.

2025-01-18 08:55:15 +0000 UTClol freud was a disbarred psychologist and all of his findings were unfounded and disproven. cocaine is a stimulant. for those with adhd cocaine actually helps them focus. no obviously dont take it and its not prescribed for people with adhd. but does have some benefits. also an easy way to find out if u might have adhd ig lol. and depression is a "chemical imbalance" (as in levels of chemicals/hormones/etc are not working together) but there is not good evidence of specific chemicals (serotonin) being the reason depression occurs. what is now debated is which combination of chemicals and other things are not working and also whether the imbalance caused the depression or depression caused the imbalance (basically the chicken or the egg question)

It wasn't until I went to college a bit further north and would drink coffee while walking between classes when I realized hot drinks actually warmed you up quite a lot

And like the only 3 pre-1960s baseball players that non-sports people know of are probably Joe DiMaggio (obviously Italian), Jackie Robinson (trailblazing African American player), and Babe Ruth (whom evidently nobody knows a single thing about). And then later their brain vaguely ascribes the story/ethnicity of Jackie Robinson to both Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth? That's the only way I can make sense of it. I'm Canadian and don't particularly watch any sports, but I knew Babe Ruth was the chubby white guy, and Jackie Robinson was the famous first black player to integrate with white player leagues.

Owing to all that, there were rumors that he was actually a light skinned black man because of his ferverent support of the black cause and his love for Harlem. Its actually a pretty interesting read if anybody wants to look deeper into it.

Some can be worked on with talk therapy, others need medication, others need more intense treatment etc etc. I think the problem tends to be that people think there’s a miracle pill where you take it and you’re cured or that one therapy session will magically make you snap out of it, when the reality is that it’s a long road to recovery. This can get very frustrating for people and they quit before feeling the effects of a long term solution. Also, if you go in with the mindset that this won’t work or that what the dr is telling you is BS and you don’t even try it, you’re setting yourself up to have the treatment not have the effect it would if you opened your mind to it.

The blood vessels in your mouth constrict due to the heat and that causes you to go flush for a moment which your body may respond to with causing you to sweat which is the body's attempt to COOL you down. So if anything it makes you colder, but your perception of the cold around you changes very briefly because you go flush. In reality your body temperature doesn't change very much at all and if you are in cold weather you will still need a jacket or whatever to actually warm up. So you weren't even wrong, you got dogpiled for no reason. So something being hotter than another thing means that the atoms are vibrating faster than in the colder thing. The coldest something can be is called absolute zero and it’s -273.15°C or -459.67°F. This would mean the atoms are not moving at all which is probably impossible but we have gotten very close. I don’t think we know for sure if there is a max on temperature but at some point all the energy would create a black hole at least in classical physics.
