"Wop" is a pejorative term used for Italians in America. It is based on the word "guappo," and "vatta," meaning sour wine, or worthless fellow. There was a false etymology that it developed as an acronym for "Without papers," or passport, the idea being that Italians arriving in America frequently had no identification.
