I can't say a single thing about the Arnheid and Garder moments here in the first episode. It's just sad to see them like this. A person being so cornered in life that he has to resort to killing someone by biting their throat out. I do love seeing Einar and Thorfinn talk here about Thorfinn's past, guilt, being a slave, freedom and what Thorfinn plans to do with his remaining life. I find this talk so beautiful. He decides to atone for what he has done. It's what he should do. And you can so clearly see how much it weighs on his shoulders, almost literally by the amount of imaginary dead people he's carrying around with him. There is no point in fighting for peace, since that will create more people who are hurt by that fighting and it wouldn't really be peace. It would be oppression. True peace is when nobody is hurting nobody. This is what Thorfinn wants. Looking at today's society, obviously we still don't have that, but we can also see that we have way more peace than people did back then. We are still on the path to peace Thorfinn has imagined. A true warrior doesn't need a sword. And now the true meaning of that comes out. A true warrior needs words. Any conflict can be solved by words. There is no need to fight anyone. Nobody has any enemies. I know you've already finished the season and you've already seen that moment, and this ties into that perfectly. The hunt for Gardar continues. It's sad seeing Arnheid like this. She really hoped that everything could go back to normal. She wanted to be free. She had accepted the fact that she was a slave before but she finally wanted to be free after she saw a glimpse of old Gardar in him. I also understand Einar wanting to help her. He knows he won't get anything out of it or get anything for it, but he wants to do so out of the pure goodness in his heart. I also love what Sverkel is saying here to Snake, to throw away his sword, give up vengeance and start growing life on the farm rather than taking it away. It's a beautiful sentiment and it fits perfectly. What a good plan Thorfinn and Einar cooked up, it's also great to see Sverkel really wanting to help save Gardar, even if he knows what he's done. He wants to stop the violence. However, Snake is a bit too smart and perceptive. This is where Thorfinn's ideology and resolve are tested. He swore to not hit anyone. He swore to end the cycle of violence. He swore to be a true warrior who doesn't need a sword, who will use his words to lead people to his end goal of peace. How will he do that against someone, who clearly reminded him of Askeladd and isn't in a mood to negotiate, who is actively trying to be hostile towards him? It's a hard problem to solve. That's what he's going to have to figure out, it's what Askeladd basically said as well. Also that shot of kid Thorfinn stanced up was so cool. I got chills. And fuck them for ending on that moment, I was in pain waiting for the next episode to air, I wanted to read the manga so bad lmao.
