The same reason he didn't read anything about the extra level of dungeon clearing - he limited himself to beginner material and stuff that he thought was immediately useful. He 'knows' that to learn spells, he first needs [Mana Manipulation], and that's 11 skill points, which he doesn't intend to spend until he'd raised his dagger skills, so picking out the exact spells he wanted was premature. Saying that, even if he hadn't read up on the details and specific spells, it would be rather odd if he didn't know healing magic existed at all... I should probably tweak that bit.
